Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Proverbs 97. The proverb today is give a
man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for
a lifetime. Yeah. I always remember this one. I like this one a lot. So let's look
at the note here. The proverb basically means that you should teach people to be
independent so they can take care of themselves rather than to do everything
for them and then create someone who is forever dependent on you. So basically,
yes. So if you teach them to fish. They then they know how to fish they could
fish themselves. They can get their own food. You have to give them a fish then
of course every day he's going to be expecting another fish and another fish
and you're just creating a burden for yourself. So let's continue. Many people
have made quotes very similar to this proverb. So there may be some who claim
it was originally a biblical quote. There are some quotes from the Bible that are
similar. I don't think they're really exact the way this is said. That's why
some people say that a Chinese proverb, an Italian proverb, and even an American
Indian proverb. So all of them have some proverbs it's very very similar to the
same idea. Okay. Let's continue. No matter which one should be credited with the
origin the point is quite clear. Basically and different versions have
been used throughout the Eastern and the Western world. So, so this idea has been
out there for a long time and throughout a lot of history too. So it's not, it's
not a new story. Okay. Let's continue. Let's take a look at one example of the
way it might be used. Don't just allow your son to stay home and do nothing while
you constantly support him. Encourage him to learn a trade. Remember the old proverb,
give a man a fish and you feed him for a day teach a man to fish
and you feed him for a lifetime. Yeah. Sometimes this proverb actually
reminds me a little bit of the difference between kind of like
socialism and capitalism. Socialism is like give a man a fish. So you just keep
giving him a fish and then you got to give me another fish and another fish
and after a while he just expects that you have to give him a fish and he'd
probably complain that you don't give him a fish.
Where if you teach him to fish, that's what capitalism is supposed to do. It's
supposed to make people more ambitious and want to go out there and you know
create things on their own and do things on their own. So sometimes it reminds me
a little bit of that as well. Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it's clear. Thank
you for your time. Bye-bye.
