Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Proverbs 115. The proverb today is slow
and steady wins the race. Okay. Let's take a look at the note here. If someone says
slow and steady wins the race, it means working slowly and consistently will be
better than if you work quickly but only for a short time.
Or for a short while and then stop. Okay. So let's continue. The origin is believed
to come from the Aesop fable " The Tortoise and the Hare" and just in case anybody's
confused, remember a tortoise is a type of turtle and the hare is really a type of
rabbit. They have just I think larger hind legs
they're a bit bigger than the average rabbit. But it's one type of rabbit. So
you might remember it that way. You might remember it more as the rabbit and the
turtle. But the real title is "The Tortoise and the Hare. "
Okay. Let's continue. According to the story the hare makes fun of the tortoise
and I believe he was making fun of him because he was just too slow.
Okay. The tortoise then challenges the hare to a race. Yeah. Well I'm so slow.
Yeah well let's have a race. The hare thinks it's ridiculous but he thinks
it's funny. So yeah why not ? Let's do it. So he accepts. Of course he never thought
that he would lose.in the end. Of course, at the beginning of the race the hare
has a large lead, a very, very large lead and believes that the tortoise could never
catch up. So he decided to take a nap. The tortoise of course was moving slow and
steady but very persistently and he never gave up.
He eventually passes the sleeping hare. The hare woke up at the last minute , but
it was too late. He could not catch up by the time the
tortoise crossed the finish line. Okay. So again remember this is an Aesop's
fable. It always has some moral to it. One of the morals is actually the proverb
itself, slow and steady wins the race. Or slow and steady is better than you know
being fast but you know then stopping too early. I always every time I talked
about this story I said there's at least two morals here. The other moral is don't
be like the ... don't be like the hare. Don't be overconfident and don't just
fool around and waste time. Yeah. He could have won that race very very easily if
he didn't do that. Okay, Anyway let's just give one example here. Trying to become
fluent in a language often takes a lot of consistent effort. Keep it up. Remember
slow and steady wins the race. So this is just how we might use it. Anyway
I hope you got it. I hope you enjoyed it. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
