  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Adverb Phrase four. The adverb phrase

  • today is hands down. Okay. Let's take a look at the note. If something is hands

  • down, it is without question, so like no doubt about it. Without question or it is

  • easily decisive. So now this could be both either in a positive way or a

  • negative way. So you might say something is hands down the best or hands down the

  • worst. So let's let's continue. Let's look at the note here. The origin of this

  • phrase is connected to horse-racing. If a particular jockey was so far ahead

  • in a race he could take his hands off the reins, and remember the reins those

  • are the leather straps that he used to, to ... you know, try to control the horse. He could

  • take his hands off the reins in the last stretch because he had such a big lead.

  • So I guess it was guaranteed that he was going to win because he was so far ahead. He

  • could just take it easy take his hands off and just glide you know right

  • towards the finish line. So it is certain. It is without doubt. Okay. That's where it

  • comes from. All right. Let's ... we have a three examples

  • here. Example number one. Italian gelato ice cream is the best I ever tasted

  • hands down. So you know at least that person in his opinion he thinks this ice

  • cream that he had from Italy is better than any other ice cream you ever had

  • before. And if you say hands down, it means like by a wide margin or you know,

  • with without question. You know, there's no doubt about it. There's no second

  • place that's close. So it's hands down. All right. Good.

  • Number two. In my opinion he is hands-down the greatest ballplayer that

  • ever lived. All right. again this is somebody talking about a particular ballplayer

  • and they think in their opinion, at least that whoever they're talking about is

  • the best. Again you know, in, in their opinion it's without question or you

  • know, they , they don't think anybody is a close second.

  • Yeah. And the last one. This is a negative one. This is hands

  • down the worst movie I have ever seen. So again, you're comparing them to all the

  • other movies and you know, without a doubt or you know without question or

  • easily you could easily say that. There was no movie that was worse than this

  • that you had ever see. Anyway I hope you got it. I hope it's clear. Thank you for

  • your time. Bye-bye.
