It's not impossible to make music with vegetables.

野菜で音楽を作るのは不可能じゃありません。

My name is Susanna Gartmayer and I'm a member of the Vegetable Orchestra.

私はスザンナ・ガートマイヤー、野菜オーケストラのメンバーです。

The orchestra exists since 18 years now.

このオーケストラは18年前からあります。

The first instrument was the tomato, because you can do sound with tomatoes, but it will be messy, for sure.

最初の楽器はトマトでした。トマトで音が出せるからです。でも、面倒なのは確かです。

We go shopping on the market first.

まず市場で買い物をします。

We choose all the vegetables there.

そこで野菜を選びます。

We have three kinds of instruments.

楽器は3種類あります。

One is the ready-made; you can just buy it at the market and play it.

1つは既製品で、市場で買ってきて弾くだけです。

It's like the pepper, it's called, no?

唐辛子みたいなものでしょ、違う？

It's ready already.

もう準備ができました。

And then there is simple instruments, like with one cut or some cuts; we get it like that.

簡単なものだと、ワンカットとか、数カットとか、そんな感じです。

Then, with the more complex instruments, we have some that work like normal instruments.

そして、より複雑な楽器には、普通の楽器と同じように使えるものもあります。

You know, the pumpkin is the bass drum, and the sound of the pumpkin is really important.

カボチャはバスドラムで、カボチャの音はとても重要です。

Good.

素晴らしい。

After shopping, we go to the venue and start to build instruments.

買い物を終えて会場に行き、楽器を作り始めます。

All in all, it takes 2 to 3 hours to build all the instruments for everybody.

全員の楽器を作るのに2～3時間かかります。

And then we start with the sound check.

そしてサウンドチェックに入ります。

And since we have new instruments each time, we have to have a very long sound check.

毎回新しい楽器を使うので、サウンドチェックがとても長いんです。

We have a lot of different musical influences in the orchestra.

オーケストラには様々な音楽的影響があります。

Since we're really many people, everybody's interested in different things.

本当にいろんな人がいるから、みんないろんなことに興味があるんです。

We make a soup during the building process of the vegetable instruments with the remaining vegetables, and we serve it to the audience after the concert.

野菜楽器を作る過程で残った野菜でスープを作り、演奏会終了後にお客さんに振る舞います。

And it's also after hearing and seeing us and smelling the vegetables, which will be intense in there because it's so small, this theater, and then you can also eat it.

また、私たちの演奏を聴いたり、見たり、野菜の匂いを嗅いだりした後でも、この劇場はとても狭いので、強烈に感じるでしょう。

You never get it out of your head anymore, if you're in the orchestra, to look vegetables in another way.

もう頭から離れなくなりますよ。オーケストラに入ったら野菜を別の見方で見てしまいます。
