It doesn't really go below freezing that much

We don't get that much snow...

...at least in this part of Japan

So, that's really not that bad, but the problem is that...

...Japanese homes don't have central heating for the most part

日本ではあまり中央暖房 がないこと。

So, when you come home expecting to walk into a nice warm room after being out in the cold

だから、寒くて身体が冷えているときに 帰ってきても、残念ながら家の中は

It doesn't happen

全然暖かくないの。

It's just as cold inside as it was outside

家の外と同じくらい寒いわ。

To some extent Japanese homes are built for this

日本の家の造りを考えると、 分かりやすいんだけれど、

They have doors in between all the rooms in the house

まず、部屋と部屋の間は、 扉で仕切られていて、

For communal areas there's sliding doors...

共同で使う部屋は スライド式のドアがあって、

...so you can keep them open or take them off, if that's what you want

用途に合わせて、開けておくことも、 取り外すこともできるようになってる。

But generally they just heat one room at a time here

でも、だいたい一部屋ずつ 別々に暖める事が多いみたい。

So that's a little more efficient

家中を暖めるよりは効率的かな。

But, on the other hand, Japanese homes themselves are built really terribly

でも、逆に日本の家は悪いところもある。

They have little to no insulation...

家によっては防音・断熱が とても乏しくて

...the walls are paper thin, our front door doesn't even shut all the way

壁も紙みたいに薄くて...私の住んでるアパート は玄関のドアが完全に閉まらないし...

So, even when you are just heating one room, it's still really inefficient

だから、一部屋ずつ暖めるのは効率的でも、 部屋自体が効率的にできてない家が多くて...

But again there's not really any ductwork, at least in this part of Japan

So, you're still just heating one room at a time that way

結局、あまり効率的に暖められない。

They also have big kerosene heaters...

灯油ヒーターもあるけど...

...which seems like the most common way of heating

（ちなみに、この辺りでは１番 よく使う暖房器具みたい）

They smell terribly...

モノによってはとても臭うし、

...they spew out all kinds of fumes and stuff...

二酸化窒素なんかを出すから、

...so you have to keep the window open...

窓を開けて

...and you have to air out your room all the time, which kind of defeats the purpose

換気しないといけない。 ちょっと部屋の温度が下がるけど...

あと、大きな灯油タンクも 置いておく必要があるし。

And then of course you have a giant gas can sitting somewhere in your house...

ちょっよ危ない気もするけれど、

...which seems kind of unsafe to me

どうなのかな、多分あまり心配 しなくてもいいみたいだけど...

But I dunno, I guess that it's fine here

そして、暖房器具の最高傑作、こたつです！

Then we have the greatest warming invention of all time, which is the kotatsu

こたつはフレームの上にブランケットを被せて、

A kotatsu is a wooden frame with some blankets on top, and then...

その上に卓が乗せてあるテーブルで、その裏にはヒーターが取り付けてあるの。

...a tabletop on top of that, and underneath you have an electric heater...

だから、ただ足を入れて座るだけで、卓上でどんな作業でもできるし、

...so you just sit underneath and you can do whatever you want on the table

すごく温かいし、

And it just warms you up

とっても快適で、

And it's really comfortable...

居心地がいいから、いつも眠くなるzzZ

...and really nice and it always makes me sleepy

あとは、電気毛布もあるし、

And then we have electric blankets, of course

電気カーペットもある。

And electric floor rugs, which are nice

もちろん、床に置くタイプの 電気ヒーターも沢山ある。

And of course tons of floor heaters

最初のうちは日本での 暖房の方法が

When I first realized how Japanese people heat their homes...

結構危ないと思っていたし、

...I thought it was really dangerous...

どうやったら多くの日本人は火事を 起こさないんだろうって不思議だった。

...and I didn't know how more Japanese people don't burn down their homes

その、アメリカではこんなに沢山 の暖房器具はないのに 、

I mean, in America we don't even have all these things...

たいていフロアヒーターくらいしか使わないのに、

...we just have like the floor heaters, usually

それでも、冬になるとやっぱり火事が起きる。

And people still burn down their homes in the winter

少なくとも、私のホームタウンでは 毎年、何件も火事が起きる。

Like, there's tons of people who do that, at least in my city, every year

でも、この辺りではほとんど耳にしない。

And you don't really hear about that kind of stuff here

So, I don't know, I guess maybe us Americans are just more...

責任を持って、これらの暖房器具 を使えるかは、ちょっと疑問かも...？

...we're not responsible enough to have these types of things

あっ、そういえば、こっちにはガスコンロもあって、 とても“素敵”なんだけど

Oh, by the way, we have gas stoves here, too, which are great

夫は安全だっていうけど、使うときは いつも緊張する。

My husband says they're safe, they always make me nervous, though

その、2回自分で使ってみたんだけど、

I mean, at least the last two times I tried to use it I somehow managed...

火を点けないままONにしてて、

...to turn on the gas without starting a flame

まあ、だから、台所中にガスが 漏れてたわけで...ちょっとヤバかった(汗)

So we just has gas spreading out into our kitchen... which was great

これらの暖房器具はあまり使わないほうが （私の）身の為かもしれない。

So, I just wanna say for the record I don't think any of this is a good idea

まあ、でも、この辺りもそれなりに寒い。 特に自転車で出かけるときは。

But yeah, it can be kind of cold here, especially if you're riding your bike everywhere...

こっちでは車がなければ、自転車で出かけるのは 普通だし、みんなそうしてる。

...if you don't have a car, which is really normal, lots of people do that

外はそんなに寒くなくなくても、 自転車に乗っていると、

Even if it's not that cold outside, when you're riding your bike and you're...

風なんかがとっても冷たい。

...going into the wind and stuff it feels really cold

多くの日本人は重ね着をして防寒してるみたい。

Most Japanese people prepare for it by wearing lots of layers...

4着も5着も重ねて着てる人もいる。

...like, sometimes even four or five layers

小柄な人なら、それでもいいかもしれないけど、

And if you're like a tiny, small Japanese person that's fine...

まあ、もしくは男性なら気に しないかもしれないけど、

...or I guess if you're a guy

女性で、重ね着して太って見られたくない人は

But if you're a woman who doesn't want to look bloated by wearing five layers...

まあ、残念だけど、

...of clothes you're kind of out of luck

寒い思いをするか、 マシュルームみたいになるか。

You either have to be cold or look like a mushroom

まあ、どっちもどっちなんだけど...

There's not really much space in between

でも、幸い、あまり寒い時期は長くは 続かない。

But fortunately the cold weather season doesn't really last that long here

まだ2月下旬だけど、もう日中は10℃くらいまで上がるし、

Like I said it's the end of February and we're already getting close to the 50s...

...at least in this part of Japan here

家の中が寒いっていっても、高が知れてるしね。

And even having a cold home all winter isn't the worst thing in the world

寒くてもここにいられ方が、ずっとマシ。

It's definitely preferable to not being here at all

冬の間中に咲いている花もあるし、

And of course in Japan they still have flowers blooming all winter

Which is great

Even in January, February, December

冬の間に、枯れていない植物を見ることが無かったから。

I'm not used to seeing living things in the winter

外出中に、通りに咲いている 花がまだ見れるのは、

So it's always a nice surprise when you go out...

いつも、嬉しいサプライズ。
