So, today, we're talking about vocabulary to describe a work of art.

では、今日は美術品、芸術品についての語彙を紹介したいと思います。

Now, guys, you know that you have to really broaden your horizons in your IELTS preparation, in order to be ready for anything.

まず、そうすることでどんなものにも対応できるよう IELTS の対策をかなり拡大させたいと思います。

And I am certain that describing a work of art is difficult for a lot of you out there.

美術品、芸術品について解説するのは多くの人が難しいと感じていると思います。

It's even difficult for a lot of native speakers, okay?

ネイティブでも難しいと思う人はいっぱいいます、いいですか？

So, guys, include this in your study plan.

Choose a museum.

美術館を選ぶ。

It'd be cool if it was a museum in the city you wanted to live in or where you live now.

住んでみたかった、または今住んでいる街の美術館を選べるといいですね。

Go to the museum's website.

その美術館のウェブサイトにいきます。

Choose one work of art.

美術品を 1 つ選びます。

And then, look that up.

そして、調べてみましょう。

Look up that specific painting, or sculpture, what have you.

その特定の絵画や彫刻、あなたが選んだものなんでも、調べてみます。

Look it up on Wikipedia, any resource.

ウィキペディアやどんな手段でもいいです。

Just read a description of it, okay?

説明はちゃんと読んでくださいね。

That's how you're going to get really comfortable in the language, the tone, the vocabulary we use to discuss this very specific topic.

そうやって言語、トーン、特定のことについて解説する語彙に慣れていきます。

Okay, so, let's get into my recommendations for some vocabulary, here.

では、ここで私のおすすめ語彙を見てみましょう。

Um, all right.

いきますよ。

So, first of all, if you're describing a sculpture, some things you might say, "a marble bust."

1 つ目、彫刻についての解説する時に使える語彙は「a marble bust：大理石胸像」

So, marble is a material, like a stone material, um, and, very expensive, and heavy.

まず、marble は石の材料ですね、そして、そうねとても高価です、そして重いです。

And, a bust is like from the hips to here.

次に bust はお尻のあたりからここまでのことです。

Okay?

いいですか？

That is a bust.

それが「 bust：胸像」ですよ。

So, that is a marble bust.

「a marble bust：大理石胸像」です。

I looked at one just an hour ago when I was preparing this.

ちょうどこの動画の下準備をしている時に大理石胸像をみました。

Um, and, the description for this piece was, "It is elegant."

その像についての解説は「優雅だ」です。

Okay?

いいですか？

This word, it, it's like a graceful, flowing appearance, okay?

この単語、意味は優美で花のような容姿を表します。

I like graceful, as well, as an adjective.

私はこの形容詞の graceful も好きですね。

You can also describe a work of art as "restrained".

美術品を「restrained：控えめな、地味な」と解説することもできます。

Now, this, it's simple, right?

この単語の意味は質素な、豪華でないの意味ですよね？

There's not a lot, there's not tons of, like, fancy detail or additional, decoration, okay?

洒落た細部や装飾がたくさん施されていないということですね。

So, restrained.

「restrained：控えめな、地味な」です。

Um, if you're describing works of art that are from a classical period, or either, or might mimic that style, you could say it has a "classical sensibility".

もし解説したい美術品が古典派時代であったり、その時代のスタイルを真似したものだとすると「classical sensibility：古典的感受性」があるとなります。

So, that means it looks like a traditional work of art.

つまり伝統的な美術品に見えるということです。

That could, anything, guys, sculpture, film, paintings, okay?

これはなんでも当てはまります、彫刻であったり、映画、絵画だったりします。

I love that phrase.

このフレーズ大好きです。

Now, describing it more specifically, right?

もっと具体的に解説したいですよね？

The materials, like marble; paintings are often oil on canvas.

材料、例えば大理石；絵画はほとんどがキャンバスに油で描かれています。

So, in your description of a work of art, knowing the material is very helpful, right?

なので美術品を説明する時、どんな材料が使われているかはとても役立ちますよね？

It completes the details.

詳細を仕上げることができます。

Um, sometimes, you might see a "mural".

ときどき「mural：壁画」という単語を見ることがあるかもしれません。

This is, uh, fantastic.

これは、（大きさが）とてつもないという意味になります。

A mural is a huge piece.

「A mural：壁画」 とはかなり大きな作品です。

You can see them outside.

屋外で見ることもあります。

They cover whole walls.

壁全体をおおいます。

Inside museums, as well, something that covers the whole wall.

美術館の中でも、壁全体をおおうものもあります。

I am thinking specifically of one of my favorites, the Guernica from Picasso.

浮かんでくるのが、私のお気に入りの 1 つ、ピカソの『ゲルニカ』です。

So, I looked that up on Wikipedia, and that gave me some ideas for vocab, today, so I encourage you guys to read that article, as well.

Okay, um, another phrase, which is nice, "It utilizes a palette of..."

では、次のフレーズ、それは「It utilizes a pallette of…：…の色彩を用いている」

So, palette is like the range of colors, right?

まず pallette は色の色彩ですよね？

So utilizes a palette of grays and blacks.

なので、灰色と黒の色彩を用いているとなります。

We normally colors aren't pluralized, but in this phrase, they are.

色は普段複数形にされることはありませんが、このフレーズでは複数形です。

Um, okay, another adjective, you could describe it, any piece, as "moving".

では次の形容詞です、どんな作品もこれを使って解説することができます「moving：心を打つ、感動的な」

If it made you feel something, okay, it is moving.

作品があなたに何かを感じさせたということです、感動的だとなります。

And last one, I love this one.

次は最後の語彙です、私が大好きな語彙。

If you're describing what you see in the painting, you could say, "Prominent in the composition is ..." is a woman and her child, whatever.

絵画で目にするものを解説する時に「Prominent in the composition is ...：構造で卓越しているのが…」例えば、女性と子供ですといったように続きます。

So, that's a great way to introduce what you actually see in the photo or painting.

以上、写真や絵画で目に見えるものを紹介する方法を紹介しました。
