so today I just want to play it by ear.

ということで、今日は耳で弾いてみたいと思います。

We use the phrase "play it by ear" when we want to do something

何かをしたいときに「耳で弾く」というフレーズを使います。

without special attention to preparation or planning.

準備や計画に特別な注意を払うことなく

Here's another example. If someone asks me:

ここにもう一つの例があります。誰かに聞かれたら

"Hey, Don. Where are you going on your vacation?"

"やあ、ドン。休暇はどこに行くんだ？"

"I'm going to meet a friend in Bangkok,

"バンコクで友人に会うことになりました。

and then we're just going to play it by ear."

"あとは耳で弾くだけ"

"play it by ear" is also a common response to the very common question:

"play it by ear "というのも、非常によくある質問に対する回答です。

"What are you going to do this weekend?"

"今週末はどうするの？"

"I'm not sure. I think I'm just gonna play it by ear."

"よくわからない。耳で聞いて弾いてみようと思います。"

So in other words,

つまり、言い換えれば

this is a very handy phrase when you feel like doing something,

これは何かをしたいと思った時にとても便利なフレーズです。

but you're not quite sure what.

と言っても、何が何だかよくわからないでしょう。
