One of the world's oldest democracies is engulfed by rage.
[French national anthem] "They come right into our arms, to cut the throats of our sons, our comrades."
Thousands of protesters from every corner of the country flooded the streets of Paris for the fourth weekend in a row.
Law enforcement doesn't want us to pass through the Place de l'Étoile.
We witnessed the unrest transform the city.
[French national anthem] Form your battalions! Let us march!
The “Gilet Jaunes” or “Yellow Vests” movement started last month when working-class people from the countryside rose up in response to a fuel tax increase.
President Emmanuel Macron announced he'd repeal the tax.
But it's too late.
The protests have already morphed into a broader rebellion now taking aim at him.
Macron, give us back our liberty!
It's a totalitarian country.
Resign, Macron! Resign!
Can I put this on your dashboard?
Most of the people we met yesterday came in peace.
-Just right there? -No.
Oh, then you're not cool.
Who are these for?
It's [They're] roses.
For who?
I buy it for the police.
Why?
Because I'm not here for fight.
I'm here for justice. And this is for justice.
Some protesters did come to fight, hurling stones, torching cars, smashing windows.
At least 2,000 were arrested nationwide.
On the morning of the protest, Paris felt like it was on lockdown —
monuments, shops and subways were shut.
At least 8,000 police and security officers were deployed.
This is tobacco. I don't have any protective gear at all.
Very good.
We traveled around the city to hear from different groups of protesters.
We met some of those who joined more recently,
like students, environmentalists and union organizers.
We will take action!
They were all united in their opposition to the government,
but leaderless and without clear demands.
When the first protests started, I wasn't there.
The media only portrayed one version of things.
They showed people who were a bit fascist, or that it was hijacked by the extreme right.
But now it's become a movement where different struggles have converged.
We've been in the streets for one month, protesting to say things are not O.K., and that our purchasing power is falling.
We're bringing our dear president some Q-Tips so that he can hear us.
It's not certain who Macron should be listening to and negotiating with.
Resign, Macron!
As the day wore on, the protests were co-opted by more extreme rioters.
Police confronted them with tear gas and stun grenades.
While demonstrations may dissipate in the coming weeks, the shared anger of the protesters will remain.
Where that anger will lead France and how all of this will end, is uncertain.
