  • Hi, guys.

  • This is Jessica Beck with IELTS Energy and the website ielts.allearsenglish.com.

  • Um, I would like to focus on our part two strategy, uh, telling a story.

  • If you guys listen to our podcast, also called IELTS Energy (laughs) just like this YouTube

  • station, if you listen to our podcast, you know that there are so many reasons to, uh,

  • use this strategy in part two.

  • And, you can use it for any topic, okay?

  • Any topic card you get in speaking part two, you can use this strategy.

  • Why should you use this strategy?

  • Well, guys, um, for some people, a lot of people, talking for two minutes in an organized,

  • coherent way is not easy.

  • Even for native speakers, it's not easy, all right?

  • So, if you use this strategy, if you think of a story or make one up, which is fun, if

  • you, if you tell a story, it's organized already.

  • This is organized from beginning to end.

  • So, it helps you reach that two minutes in an organized way, with linking words.

  • First, this happened, after that, five minutes later, finally, blah, blah, blah.

  • You can use these linking words to organize your story.

  • So, fill the two minutes in an organized way.

  • High fluency and coherent score.

  • Also, um, if you tell a story, then, you usually add interesting details, either that you're

  • making up as you go or that you actually call to mind to create an image in telling a story

  • for the examiner.

  • This allows you to offer very specific vocabulary, so raises your vocab score, and, um, it also

  • increases your pronunciation score, because when we tell a story, we become more emotive.

  • We use our emotions more.

  • That will, I promise you, and again, you know this if you listen to the podcast.

  • Putting emotion in your voice will raise your pronunciation score.

  • So, those are the three categories that we always focus on raising our scores in vocabulary,

  • fluency and coherence, and pronunciation.

  • Telling a story does all of those things, all right?

  • Let me, let's, let's talk about some examples, okay?

  • So, one of the most difficult part two tasks out there, uh, ask you to describe objects.

  • There are a bunch of different examples of this.

  • One example might be, um, describe an expensive object that you want to own, all right?

  • So, how do you turn that into a story?

  • Well, first of all, guys, answer the question directly, all right?

  • Um, say exactly what it is you want to buy, why you want to buy it, and then, create a

  • story around this object, all right?

  • Say, for example, you want to buy a new car.

  • Tell me what new car you want to buy, why you want to buy it, and then, tell me a story

  • of what you would do the very first day you had it, all right?

  • Like, take a road trip to the coast with your two best friends and your dog.

  • Take a tent, go camping on the beach.

  • Drive into a cute little town to find some seafood.

  • Um, drive to another little town to go fishing.

  • You know, there, you can create a whole story around this object.

  • Now, remember, guys, this is something you have to practice, just like any skill and

  • strategy, especially if you want to try and make up stories, um, because that does make

  • practice, all right?

  • I can come up with stories w- about anything, right away, with no problem (laughs) without

  • even taking notes or thinking about it, but that's because I, I practice inventing stuff

  • all that time.

  • I, I'm a writer.

  • I love to be creative.

  • So, this is something very fun.

  • It's an awesome skill, and it will help you in part two, okay?

  • All right, so, what if you have to describe an event or experience?

  • Well, that's an easy story, guys.

  • Tell the story of the experience.

  • Boom, done.

  • (laughs) Okay?

  • Don't get sidetracked, all right?

  • Don't start, don't weave in and out, and start talking about something, something else, like

  • your friend that you saw there, or something.

  • Focus on telling a coherent story from beginning to end.

  • That's what you also have to practice taking notes on, all right?

  • So you can organize these ideas before you start talking, okay?

  • So, that one's easy.

  • What about a person?

  • Now, um, guys, you should go to our website, ielts.allearsenglish.com.

  • Lindsay and I have done, um, three episodes on all, or is it four episodes?

  • On all the possible speaking part two topics, the strategies for each of them, and sample

  • answers.

  • So, again, go to our website, ielts.allearsenglish.com.

  • Type, "Part two strategy," in the search bar.

  • All right?

  • So, what if you're asked to describe a person?

  • Well, tell me who you're describing.

  • Tell me what they look like, their personality, and then, tell me a story about that person.

  • All right?

  • And again, guys, you can make it up.

  • Um, if you can't think of a story right away, don't worry about it.

  • Just make it up.

  • Say you have to describe your best friend, okay?

  • What if last week you guys went hiking, and, uh, and you guys got lost, and your best friend

  • is so calm and intelligent that she didn't get worried.

  • She sat down, looked at a map.

  • Um, she picked a direction and i- you guys walked for another mile.

  • Unfortunately, it was the wrong way, but your friend still stayed calm, which helped you

  • to, um, also keep your wits about you.

  • And, eventually, after a couple hours l- in the forest, you guys found your way out (laughs)

  • to the highway and caught a ride back to the parking lot.

  • I don't know.

  • (laughs) Like, I guess, I'm just, I'm just making it up.

  • Um, so, practice this skill and strategy, guys.

  • It is the best way.

  • It is the best way to get the highest scores in speaking part two, so practice this one

  • strategy for all your answers.

  • Um, to check out our IELTS course, it's called Three Keys IELTS, available now, and it comes

  • with a score guaranteed increase, guys.

  • Check it out now at ielts.allearsenglish.com.

  • I'm Jessica Beck.

  • Thanks for watching.
