under 50 feet of water and a big school of sharks.

私の話は ガラパゴス諸島の 北部から始まります

I'd been scuba diving with a group of friends for about a week,

水深15mの海中で 頭上には サメの大きな群れがいました

and it had been glorious:

約１週間 友人グループと スキューバダイビングをしていました

manta rays, whale sharks,

夢のような体験でした

penguins and, of course, hammerhead sharks.

Today's dive was particularly tricky.

ペンギン そして もちろん シュモクザメもいます

The surge was terrible.

その日のダイビングは 特に大変でした

You had to have your camera rig tight in

波がひどく荒れていて

and your arm out,

カメラ一式をしっかり抱えながら 片腕は伸ばしておく必要がありました

because the surge kept throwing you into the rocks

while you're scanning up for that beautiful photograph.

綺麗な写真を撮ろうと 周囲を見渡している間に

It was going OK, until ...

波で 身体が岩に 打ちつけられそうになるからです

not OK.

上手くいきそうだと 思っていました

Something was terribly, terribly wrong.

それが起きるまでは

I pulled my hand back,

非常にまずい状況になったのです

and I had long, black sea urchin spines

手を引き戻すと

all the way through my gloves,

黒くて長い ウニのトゲが何本も

which meant all the way through my hand.

手袋を貫通していました

Now, this is bad.

つまり 私の手を貫通していました

I mean, obviously when you have something all the way through your hand,

これは まずいことです

it's kind of bad anyway,

自分の手を 何かが貫通しているのは

but in this case, sea urchins have a venom on them that,

もちろん まずいことですが

if you've ever tangled with them,

この場合 ウニは毒を持っていて

you know that a sea urchin spine in you gives you horrible, painful inflammation.

ウニのトゲが刺さったことの ある方はご存じでしょうが

But that wasn't even topmost in my mind at this point.

トゲが刺さった箇所は 痛くてひどい炎症になります

This did not look real.

しかしその時 それさえも 頭に思い浮かばず

I could not believe that this was my hand.

ただ自分の目を疑っていました

Now, in a crisis, I tend to disassociate into, like, little scientists,

目の前のものが 自分の手だとは 信じられませんでした

and I start talking very analytically.

危機に面した時 私は 小さな科学者の分身を生み出していって

All analysis was gone, adrenaline brain kicked in,

深く分析しながら 話す癖がありますが

and I just yanked the spines out.

分析をする冷静さは全くなく アドレナリンの脳がやってきて

I don't remember doing it.

私は トゲを ただ強く引き抜きました

I just remember thinking, "I can't get my glove off with these in here."

自分で引き抜いたことを 覚えてはいません

I do remember taking the glove off

ただ覚えているのは「ここにトゲがあると 手袋を脱げない」と考えたことと

and a big plume of black coming up in front of my face.

手袋を脱いだときに

And biologist brain now shows up and starts freaking out.

目の前に 大きな 黒い水煙が出たことです

"How could all that toxin have gotten into that wound already?"

そして私の生物学者の脳が現れ 震え上がり始めます

Well, physicist brain then shows up and very calmly explains,

「あんな毒が全部 傷に 入り込んでしまったなんて！」

"No, no, no, we're at 50 feet,

すると 私の物理学者の脳が現れ 冷静沈着にこう説明します

red wavelengths are attenuated.

「いやいや 水深15ｍだから

That's blood -- not black.

赤色の波長の光は弱まっている

And sharks.

水煙は黒色じゃない あれは血だ

So what are you gonna do?"

あと サメの群れがいるけど

Well, I cranked my cummerbund down really hard over my hand,

これから どうする？」

and I simply swam away.

私は腰に巻いていたカマーバンドを 手にきつく巻き付け

"Let's let that big old cloud of blood dissipate a bit before we have to surface

ただ泳いで逃げました

through all of these sharks."

「サメの群れを通り抜ける前に あの大きな血煙を

So when I did surface,

少し散らさないと」

my warm-blooded-mammal brain

水面に向かっていると

was in an absolute gibbering panic:

私の 温血哺乳動物の脳は

"They don't feed when they're schooling. They don't feed when they're schooling.

すっかりパニックになり 早口でまくしたてます

All the way up."

「サメは群れをなしている時は食べない サメは群れをなしている時は食べない

And they didn't.

ずっとそうだったじゃない」

So apparently, they have read the same books that I have.

サメは食べませんでした

(Laughter)

どうも サメも私と同じ教科書を 読んでいたようです

Now, it turns out,

（笑）

when you've been stabbed with sea urchin spines,

さて 結果として

and you're two days away from any medical help,

ウニのトゲが刺さった時に

the thing that you've got to do is, unfortunately, cook your hand.

一番近くの病院でも ２日かかるという状況では

So you put it in water as hot as you can stand,

残念ながら 自分で手を 熱湯消毒するしかありませんでした

and you keep adding boiling water

手を 耐えられる限りの 高温のお湯に入れ

until you think you will go absolutely insane.

気が狂いそうになるまで

Now, it worked --

沸騰したお湯を つぎ足し続けるのです

the hand itself did not work so well for several weeks after that,

さて 処置はうまくいきました

but eventually, fine motor skills returned.

その後 手そのものは 数週間うまく動きませんでしたが

All except for one spot, that stayed stiff and painful for weeks

少しずつ 細やかな動きも できるようになっていきました

after the other things had gotten better.

でも 他の部分が回復しても １箇所だけは

So it turned out, I'd broken off a tip of the urchin spine

何週間しても 痛みとしこりが残りました

in the joint itself,

そしてわかったのは ウニのトゲを引き抜いた際 トゲの端が

and that's why it wasn't getting better.

関節の中に残ってしまっていて

So the orthopedist says, "You know, we should get this out.

指が回復しない ということです

Nothing too urgent, not an emergency."

整形外科医は言いました 「取り出すべきですね

So we scheduled a small surgery for a few weeks out on a Monday.

別に急ぐ必要はありませんが」

And on the Friday before,

私達は 数週間後の月曜日に 小さな手術をすることにしました

I broke my pelvis in a horseback riding accident.

そして その直前の金曜日

(Laughter)

私は乗馬中の事故で 骨盤を骨折してしまいました

Yeah.

（笑）

So we kind of postponed that surgery.

ですよね

My broken pelvis and I were now facing six weeks on the couch,

指の手術は延期ということに なりました

and I would have gone absolutely insane if it hadn't been for my friends.

骨盤を骨折しているので ６週間 ソファで過ごすはめになり

Spontaneous parties broke out at my house every night for weeks.

友人達がいてくれなかったら すっかり気が狂っていたことでしょう

I was fed. I was entertained.

何週間もの間 毎晩友達が何人も来て パーティのようになりました

It was great.

私は食事にもありつけ 楽しませてももらいました

But that kind of enthusiasm is sort of hard to sustain over the long term,

素晴らしい環境でした

and eventually it petered down to just one friend,

しかし そんな熱意は 長期間続くものではありません

who would send me jokes during the day

最終的に 来てくれるのは １人の友人だけになりました

and come and keep me company in the evenings --

日中は 私にジョークを メールしてくれ

someone I got to know a whole lot better during this period of convalescence.

夜には家に来て そばにいてくれました

And when I was finally pronounced well enough

この療養期間中に 前よりずっと 彼について知ることができました

to do weight-bearing activities,

体重をかける動きをしても良いと

we loaded a telescope in the car and drove up into the mountains

ようやく医者に言われた時

to look at the Hale–Bopp comet.

私達は車に望遠鏡を積んで 山へドライブに行き

Yes, we are geeks.

ヘール・ボップ彗星を 観察しました

And got caught in a landslide.

そうです 私達はオタクなんです

(Laughter)

そして 地滑りに巻き込まれました

I know -- like, really?

（笑）

No. Just kidding.

ですよね 本当に？って思いますよね

(Laughter)

ええ 冗談です

No more disasters. No. Just the opposite, in fact.

（笑）

That was 21 years ago,

もう災難は出てきません むしろその反対で

and for 19 of those years,

あれから21年が経ちましたが

I have been married to that marvelous introvert

そのうち19年の間

who never in a million years would have approached me

あの素敵な 内気な男性と 結婚生活を送っています

under other circumstances.

もしあの事故がなければ

We have a wonderful 14-year-old daughter,

何百万年あっても彼は絶対に アプローチしなかったでしょう

who did all my illustrations.

私達には 14歳の 素晴らしい娘がいます

この話で お伝えしたいのは 手に穴が開いたことでも

It's a love story.

サメでも 手を熱湯に漬けたことでも 骨折でもありません

It's a love story with a funny little epilogue.

これはラブストーリーです

Now I was weight-bearing again, I could reschedule that surgery,

ちょっぴり可笑しな結末がある ラブストーリーです

get the spine out.

動けるようになったので 私は例の手術を再度調整し

But I didn't need it anymore.

トゲを取ることにしました

Turns out, when you break a bone,

でも もう必要なかったんです

your body scavenges calcium from all the bones in your body --

というのも 骨折した際には

and from the little sea urchin spine that you happen to have lodged

人の身体は 体中の骨から カルシウム成分をくまなく集めます—

in the joint of your finger.

たまたま指の関節に はまっている

So yes,

小さなウニの トゲまで含めて

my pelvis is now part sea urchin.

そうなんです

(Laughter)

私の骨盤の一部は今 ウニでできています

So to biology brain, physicist brain,

（笑）

adrenaline brain, warm-blooded-mammal brain,

ですから 私の中にある 生物学者の脳、物理学者の脳

I get to add "urchin brain,"

アドレナリンの脳 温血哺乳動物の脳に

with all of the superpowers that that confers.

「ウニの脳」が加わりました

You don't need to worry, though:

もう鬼に金棒です

that I am not fully human is one of the things

でも ご心配には及びません

that my family loves the most about me.
