but stories of exceptional women from India whom I've met.

They continue to inspire me,

teach me, guide me in my journey of my life.

These are incredible women.

私を勇気づけ 指導し 導き続けてくれている—

They never had an opportunity to go to school,

とてつもなく素晴らしい女性たちです

they had no degrees,

学校に通う機会は一度もなく

no travel, no exposure.

学位は持っていませんし

Ordinary women who did extraordinary things

旅行もしないし 外の世界も知りません

with the greatest of their courage,

平凡な女性でありながら 非凡なことを

wisdom and humility.

この上ない勇気と知恵と

These are my teachers.

謙虚な心を以って 成し遂げた人たちです

For the last three decades,

私が師と仰ぐ女性たちです

I've been working, staying and living in India

これまでの30年間にわたり

and working with women in rural India.

私はずっとインド国内で 活動しており

I was born and brought up in Mumbai.

農村部の女性たちと接しています

When I was in college,

私はムンバイで生まれ育ちました

I met Jayaprakash Narayan,

大学生の頃に

famous Gandhian leader

有名なガンディー主義者リーダーの

who inspired youth to work in rural India.

ジャヤプラカシ・ナラヤン と会いました

I went into the villages to work in rural India.

若者たちがインドの農村部で働く きっかけになった人物です

I was part of land rights movement,

私も農村部で働こうと 村での活動に参加しました

farmers' movement

土地の所有権に関する運動や

and women's movement.

農民運動や

On the same line,

女性運動です

I ended up in a very small village,

その流れで

fell in love with a young, handsome, dynamic young farmer-leader

とても小さな村に辿り着き

who was not very educated,

若くてハンサムで行動力のある 農民運動のリーダーと恋に落ちました

but he could pull the crowd.

あまり教育を受けていない人でしたが

And so in the passion of youth,

カリスマ性がありました

I married him

そして 若さに身を任せて

and left Mumbai,

彼と結婚し

and went to a small village which did not have running water

ムンバイを去り

and no toilet.

小さな村に引っ越しましたが そこは水道水もなければ

Honestly, my family and friends were horrified.

トイレもありませんでした

(Laughter)

正直な話 私の家族や友人は 相当なショックを受けていました

I was staying with my family,

（笑）

with my three children in the village,

私はこの村で暮らし

and one day,

家族と３人の子供がいましたが

a few years later one day,

ある日のこと

a woman called Kantabai came to me.

結婚後 数年経ったある日

Kantabai said, "I want to open a saving account.

カンタバイという女性が 私の元を訪れました

I want to save."

カンタバイは言いました

I asked Kantabai:

「貯蓄用の口座を開きたい お金が貯めたいの」

"You are doing business of blacksmith.

私は尋ねました

Do you have enough money to save?

「あなたは鍛冶屋でしょ

You are staying on the street.

貯めるほどのお金はある？

Can you save?"

住むところもないのに

Kantabai was insistent.

お金を貯められる？」

She said, "I want to save because I want to buy a plastic sheet

カンタバイは譲りません

before the monsoons arrive.

「モンスーンの季節までに ビニールのシートが必要だから

I want to save my family from rain."

お金を貯めたいの

I went with Kantabai to the bank.

家族が雨に濡れないように」

Kantabai wanted to save 10 rupees a day --

私はカンタバイと銀行に行きました

less than 15 cents.

カンタバイが貯めようとしていたのは 1日15ルピー

Bank manager refused to open the account of Kantabai.

15セントにも満たない額です

He said Kantabai's amount is too small

銀行の支店長は カンタバイの申請を却下しました

and it's not worth his time.

カンタバイの貯蓄額が 低すぎるため

Kantabai was not asking any loan from the bank.

相手にするだけ時間の無駄なのだと

She was not asking any subsidy or grant from the government.

カンタバイは ローンを組みたいのではありません

What she was asking was to have a safe place

政府から補助金や助成金を 求めているのでもありません

to save her hard-earned money.

一生懸命稼いだお金を 安全に蓄えられる場所が欲しいと

And that was her right.

お願いしているだけなのです

And I went --

それは 当然の権利です

I said if banks are not opening the account of Kantabai,

そこで私は言いました

why not start the bank

銀行がカンタバイの口座を 開いてくれないのなら

which will give an opportunity for women like Kantabai to save?

私が銀行を立ち上げればいい

And I applied for the banking license to Reserve Bank of India.

そうすれば彼女のような女性が 貯蓄できる機会が作れる と

(Applause)

そして 私はインド準備銀行に 銀行設立の許可を申請しました

No, it was not an easy task.

（拍手）

Our license was rejected --

でも 簡単な話ではありませんでした

(Laughter)

申請は却下されてしまいました

on the grounds --

（笑）

Reserve Bank said that we cannot issue a license

却下の理由として

to the bank who's promoting members who are nonliterate.

インド準備銀行は こう述べました

I was terrified.

読み書きのできない人たちのための 銀行など許可できないと

I was crying.

私はショックでした

And by coming back home,

涙が止まりませんでした

I was continuously crying.

そして 家に帰ってからも

I told Kantabai and other women

泣き続けました

that we couldn't get the license because our women are nonliterate.

許可が下りなかった理由は

Our women said, "Stop crying.

村の女性が読み書きできないからだ とカンタバイたちに伝えると

We will learn to read and write

こう言われました 「泣くのはやめて

and apply again, so what?"

読み書きをこれから学ぶわ

(Applause)

それからまた申請すればいいだけよ」

We started our literacy classes.

（拍手）

Every day our women would come.

私たちは読み書きの授業を始めました

They were so determined that after working the whole day,

毎日 村の女性たちが授業に参加しました

they would come to the class and learn to read and write.

彼女たちの意志はとても強く 一日中働いた後でも

After five months,

授業にやってきて 読み書きを学んでいました

we applied again,

そして ５ヶ月後

but this time I didn't go alone.

再び 申請を行いました

Fifteen women accompanied me to Reserve Bank of India.

この時 私は１人ではありませんでした

Our women told the officer of Reserve Bank,

15人もの女性が インド準備銀行に付き添ってくれました

"You rejected the license because we cannot read and write.

女性たちはインド準備銀行の 行員に向かって言いました

You rejected the license because we are nonliterate."

「私たちが読み書きができないからと 申請を却下しましたね

But they said, "There were no schools when we were growing,

識字能力がないからという理由で 申請を却下しましたね

so we are not responsible for our noneducation."

私たちが子供の頃は 通える学校がなかったんです

And they said, "We cannot read and write,

だから 学歴がないのは 私たちのせいではありません」

but we can count."

女性たちは続けて言いました

(Laughter)

「読み書きはできないけれど 計算はできます」

(Applause)

（笑）

And they challenged the officer.

（拍手）

"Then tell us to calculate the interest of any principal amount."

そして 行員にこう持ちかけました

(Laughter)

「何でもいいから元本金額の 利子を計算させてください」

"If we are unable to do it,

（笑）

don't give us license.

「もし 私たちが 計算できなければ

Tell your officers to do it without a calculator

許可しなくて結構です

and see who can calculate faster."

行員にも電卓を使わずに計算させて

(Applause)

どっちが早く計算できるか 確かめてください」

Needless to say,

（拍手）

we got the banking license.

言うまでもない話ですが

(Laughter)

銀行開設の許可は下りました

(Applause)

（笑）

Today, more than 100,000 women are banking with us

（拍手）

and we have more than 20 million dollars of capital.

私たちの銀行を利用する女性は 今や10万人以上となり

This is all women's savings,

20億ドル以上の資本を抱えています

women capital,

これは すべて 女性の貯蓄によるもので

no outside investors asking for a business plan.

女性による資本です

No.

外部の投資家に事業計画を 求められることもありません

It's our own rural women's savings.

I also want to say that yes,

after we got the license,

それから こんな話もあります

today Kantabai has her own house

銀行開設の許可が下りた後

and is staying with her family

今ではカンタバイも 自分の家を所有しています

in her own house for herself and her family.

自分と家族のために買った家に 家族と住んでいるのです

(Applause)

When we started our banking operations,

銀行の操業が開始してから

I could see that our women were not able to come to the bank

気がついたのは 女性たちが銀行に足を運べないこと

because they used to lose the working day.

労働時間が短くなるからです

I thought if women are not coming to the bank,

私はこう考えました 女性たちが銀行に来ないのなら

bank will go to them,

銀行の方から赴こうと

and we started doorstep banking.

それで 訪問型のサービスを始めました

Recently, we starting digital banking.

最近では デジタルバンキングも始めました

Digital banking required to remember a PIN number.

デジタルバンキングには 暗証番号の記憶が必要です

Our women said, "We don't want a PIN number.

女性たちは言いました

That's not a good idea."

「暗証番号なんていらない ないほうがいい」と

And we tried to explain to them

そこで 説得を試みました

that maybe you should remember the PIN number;

暗証番号は覚えた方がいいし

we will help you to remember the PIN number.

覚えられるように手伝うから と

They were firm.

しかし女性たちは頑なで

They said, "suggest something else,"

「代案を出して」と言い

and they --

そして—

(Laughter)

（笑）

and they said, "What about thumb?"

「親指はどう？」と言いました

I thought that's a great idea.

名案だと私は思いました

We'll link that digital banking with biometric,

デジタルバンクを 生体認証機能と連動させて

and now women use the digital financial transaction

今では 電子取引を行うのに 女性たちは

by using the thumb.

親指を使っています

And you know what they said?

彼女たちが言うには

They said, "Anybody can steal my PIN number

「暗証番号は 誰にでも盗めるから

and take away my hard-earned money,

一生懸命稼いだお金を 盗られてしまうかもしれない

but nobody can steal my thumb."

親指なら誰も盗めない」

(Applause)

That reinforced the teaching which I have always learned from women:

女性たちから常々学んできた教えを 再確認させられる出来事でした

never provide poor solutions to poor people.

貧しい（poor）人々に粗末な（poor） 提案をしてはいけないということ

They are smart.

聡明な人々ですから

(Applause)

A few months later,

数ヶ月後

another woman came to the bank --

別の女性が銀行を訪れました

Kerabai.

ケーラバイです

She mortgaged her gold and took the loan.

彼女は金のアクセサリーを担保に ローンを組みました

I asked Kerabai, "Why are you mortgaging your precious jewelry

私は尋ねました

and taking a loan?"

「大切なアクセサリーを担保に出して ローンを組むのはなぜ？」

Kerabai said, "Don't you realize that it's a terrible drought?

ケーラバイは言いました

There's no food or fodder for the animals.

「ひどい干ばつがあったじゃないの 食べ物もないし 家畜用の飼料もないの

No water.

水もないわ

I'm mortgaging gold to buy food and fodder for my animals."

金を担保にして 食べ物と家畜用の飼料を買うの」

And then she asks me, "Can I mortgage gold and get water?"

そして 私に聞きました 「金を担保に水が買える？」

I had no answer.

私は答えられませんでした

Kerabai challenged me: "You're working in the village

ケーラバイに問われました

with women and finance,

「あなたは村で女性に接し 資金管理をしているけど

but what if one day there's no water?

いつか水がなくなったら どうなるの？

If you leave this village,

もしあなたがいなくなったら

with whom are you going to do banking?"

誰と銀行取引をすればいいの？」

Kerabai had a valid question,

もっともな問いかけでした

so in this drought,

そこで 干ばつが続く中

we decided to start the cattle camp in the area.

私たちは 家畜用のテントを 作ることにしました

It's where farmers can bring their animals to one place

農家の人々が家畜を一箇所に集めて

and get fodder and water.

飼料や水を与える場所です

It didn't rain.

雨は降りませんでした

Cattle camp was extended for 18 months.

家畜用のテントは 18ヶ月延長されました

Kerabai used to move around in the cattle camp

ケーラバイは家畜用のテントを周り

and sing the songs of encouragement.

励ましの歌を歌っていました

Kerabai became very popular.

ケーラバイは人気者になりました

It rained and cattle camp was ended,

雨が降って 家畜用のテントは閉鎖しましたが

but after cattle camp ended,

家畜用テントの閉鎖後

Kerabai came to our radio --

ケーラバイはラジオ局を訪れました

we have community radio

その地域にはラジオ局があり

which has more than 100,000 listeners.

リスナー数は10万人以上です

She said, "I want to have a regular show on the radio."

ケーラバイはレギュラー番組を持ちたいと ラジオ局に言いました

Our radio manager said, "Kerabai, you cannot read and write.

ラジオ局長は言いました

How will you write the script?"

「あなたは読み書きができないのに どうやって台本を書くつもり？」

You know what she replied?

ケーラバイの答えはこうでした

"I cannot read and write,

「読み書きはできないけれど

but I can sing.

私には歌が歌える

What's the big deal?"

何が問題なの？」

(Laughter)

（笑）

And today,

そして 今

Kerabai is doing a regular radio program,

ケーラバイは ラジオのレギュラー番組を持ち

and not only that,

それだけではなく

she's become a famous radio jockey

有名なラジオパーソナリティとなり

and she has been invited by all of the radios,

あらゆるラジオ局に 呼ばれています

even from Mumbai.

ムンバイにも行きます

She gets the invitation and she does the show.

招待を受けて 番組に出るのです

(Applause)

Kerabai has become a local celebrity.

ケーラバイは地元の有名人になりました

One day I asked Kerabai,

ある日 私は彼女に尋ねました

"How did you end up singing?"

「なぜ歌を歌うようになったの？」

She said, "Shall I tell you the real fact?

彼女は言いました

When I was pregnant with my first child,

「本当の事が知りたい？

I was always hungry.

第一子を妊娠していた時 私は常に空腹だったの

I did not have enough food to eat.

満足に食べられる物がなくて

I did not have enough money to buy food,

食べ物を買うお金もなかった

and so to forget my hunger, I started singing."

だから 空腹を忘れるために 歌を歌い始めたの」

So strong and wise, no?

なんて強くて賢明な人でしょう

I always think that our women overcome so many obstacles --

女性たちは数多くの困難を 乗り越えていると私は常に思っています

cultural, social, financial --

文化的なものや社会的なもの 金銭的なものにいたるまでです

and they find out their ways.

それでも 解決策を見つけるのです

I would like to share another story:

また別の人の話をします

Sunita Kamble.

スニタ・カンブレという女性です

She has taken a course in a business school,

ビジネススクールに通ったこともあり

and she has become a veterinary doctor.

今は獣医として働いています

She's Dalit;

ダリットという

she comes from an untouchable caste,

不可触民のカースト出身ですが

but she does artificial insemination in goats.

ヤギの人工授精を仕事にしています

It is a very male-dominated profession

男性が圧倒的に多い職業ですし

and it is all the more difficult for Sunita

スニタにとっては より一層 難しくもあります

because Sunita comes from an untouchable caste.

不可触民カーストの生まれだからです

But she worked very hard.

しかし 懸命に働き

She did successful goat deliveries in the region

地域でヤギの出産を成功させてきたため

and she became a famous goat doctor.

ヤギのお医者さんとして有名になりました

Recently, she got a national award.

最近は 国から賞を授与されました

I went to Sunita's house to celebrate --

私はスニタの家を訪れました

to congratulate her.

お祝いの言葉を伝えるためです

When I entered the village,

村に着くと

I saw a big cutout of Sunita.

スニタの大きな看板があり

Sunita was smiling on that picture.

笑顔の彼女が写っていました

I was really surprised to see an untouchable,

私はとてもびっくりしました

coming from the village,

その村出身である不可触民の 大きな立て写真が

having a big cutout at the entrance of the village.

村の入り口に立っていることにです

When I went to her house,

スニタの家に着くと

I was even more amazed

もっと驚かされました

because upper caste leaders --

なぜなら 上位カーストの 男性指導者たちが

men -- were sitting in the house, in her house,

彼女の家を訪れ

and having chai and water,

お茶を飲んでいたからです

which is very rare in India.

これはインドで 非常に稀な光景です

Upper caste leaders do not go to an untouchable's house

上位カーストの指導者たちが 不可触民の家を訪れ

and have chai or water.

お茶を飲むなんてありえません

And they were requesting her

指導者たちはスニタに対し

to come and address the gathering of the village.

村の集会に参加して 演説をするよう頼んでいました

Sunita broke centuries-old caste conditioning in India.

スニタは何世紀も続く インドのカースト制度を破ったのです

Let me come to what the younger generations do.
