but first, we have to rethink about our human values.

AIと人類は共生できる という話をしたいと思います

So let me first make a confession about my errors in my values.

でも その前に人間の価値観を 問い直す必要があります

It was 11 o'clock, December 16, 1991.

まず初めに 私の過ちについて 告白させてください

I was about to become a father for the first time.

それは 1991年12月16日の 午前11時のことでした

My wife, Shen-Ling, lay in the hospital bed

私は 初めて父親に なろうとしていました

going through a very difficult 12-hour labor.

妻のシェンリンは 病院のベッドに横たわり

I sat by her bedside

12時間にわたって とても苦しい 陣痛に耐えていました

but looked anxiously at my watch,

and I knew something that she didn't.

I knew that if in one hour,

our child didn't come,

Apple loved my work and decided to announce it

at TED1992,

26 years ago on this very stage.

TED1992において―

I thought I had made one of the biggest, most important discoveries in AI,

and so did the "Wall Street Journal" on the following day.

But as far as discoveries went,

it turned out,

I didn't discover India, or America.

Perhaps I discovered a little island off of Portugal.

But the AI era of discovery continued,

and more scientists poured their souls into it.

About 10 years ago, the grand AI discovery

更に多くの科学者が AIに打ち込むようになりました

was made by three North American scientists,

10年ほど前 ３人の北米の 科学者の手によって

and it's known as deep learning.

AIについての重大な発見がありました

Deep learning is a technology that can take a huge amount of data

ディープラーニングです

within one single domain

ディープラーニングとは ひとつの領域に関する

and learn to predict or decide at superhuman accuracy.

大量のデータを取り込み

For example, if we show the deep learning network

人間を超える精度で 予測や決断ができるようにする技術です

a massive number of food photos,

例えば ディープラーニングの ネットワークに

it can recognize food

大量の食べ物の写真を 見せたとしましょう

such as hot dog or no hot dog.

Or if we show it many pictures and videos and sensor data

it can actually drive a car as well as a human being

And what if we showed this deep learning network

So deep learning has become the core in the era of AI discovery,

and that's led by the US.

But we're now in the era of implementation,

where what really matters is execution, product quality, speed and data.

And that's where China comes in.

実行、商品の品質 スピードやデータが大事な時代です

Chinese entrepreneurs,

そこに中国が台頭してきました

who I fund as a venture capitalist,

私が投資家として出資している 中国の起業家たちは

are incredible workers,

信じられないほどの働き者で

amazing work ethic.

仕事に対する姿勢には 目を見張ります

My example in the delivery room is nothing compared to how hard people work in China.

分娩室での私など 中国人の猛烈な 働きぶりに比べたら足元にも及びません

As an example, one startup tried to claim work-life balance:

例えば ある新興企業は自社の ワークライフバランスをこう表現しました

"Come work for us because we are 996."

「弊社は996なので ぜひ働きに来てください」

And what does that mean?

どういう意味でしょうか？

It means the work hours of 9am to 9pm, six days a week.

労働時間が 午前９時から午後９時まで 週６日出勤という意味です

That's contrasted with other startups that do 997.

他の997の新興企業と 比較しているのです

And the Chinese product quality has consistently gone up

さらに 中国製の商品は 品質がこの10年で

in the past decade,

着実に良くなってきました

and that's because of a fiercely competitive environment.

競争の激しい環境に おかれているからです

In Silicon Valley, entrepreneurs compete in a very gentlemanly fashion,

シリコンバレーでは 起業家たちは とても紳士的に競争しています

sort of like in old wars in which each side took turns

to fire at each other.

But in the Chinese environment,

it's truly a gladiatorial fight to the death.

In such a brutal environment, entrepreneurs learn to grow very rapidly,

they learn to make their products better at lightning speed,

and they learn to hone their business models

ビジネスモデルに磨きをかける 方法を学んでいます

until they're impregnable.

As a result, great Chinese products like WeChat and Weibo

are arguably better

than the equivalent American products from Facebook and Twitter.

FacebookやTwitterと比べ 優れているのは ほぼ確実でしょう

And the Chinese market embraces this change

さらに 中国の市場は この変化を受け入れて

and accelerated change and paradigm shifts.

変化やパラダイムシフトを 加速させました

As an example, if any of you go to China,

you will see it's almost cashless and credit card-less,

現金もクレジットカードも ほとんど目にしないでしょう

because that thing that we all talk about, mobile payment,

has become the reality in China.

In the last year,

昨年

18.8 trillion US dollars were transacted on mobile internet,

and that's because of very robust technologies

built behind it.

It's even bigger than the China GDP.

その金額は中国のGDPさえも 超えています

And this technology, you can say, how can it be bigger than the GDP?

皆さん どうやったらGDPを 超えられるのかと思うでしょう

Because it includes all transactions:

wholesale, channels, retail, online, offline,

卸売り、流通ルート、小売り オンライン・オフライン取引

going into a shopping mall or going into a farmers market like this.

The technology is used by 700 million people

その技術は 商取引だけでなく 互いにお金をやり取りするために

to pay each other, not just merchants,

７億人の人々が利用しています

so it's peer to peer,

個人の直接取引なのです

and it's almost transaction-fee-free.

更に決済費用は ほぼかかりません

And it's instantaneous,

瞬間的にやり取りが可能で

and it's used everywhere.

And finally, the China market is enormous.

そして 中国市場は巨大です

This market is large,

市場が大きいので

which helps give entrepreneurs more users, more revenue,

more investment, but most importantly,

it gives the entrepreneurs a chance to collect a huge amount of data

which becomes rocket fuel for the AI engine.

So as a result, the Chinese AI companies

have leaped ahead

so that today, the most valuable companies

in computer vision, speech recognition,

speech synthesis, machine translation and drones

are all Chinese companies.

So with the US leading the era of discovery

アメリカが 発見の時代を先導し

and China leading the era of implementation,

中国が実用化の時代を先導し

we are now in an amazing age

驚くべき時代が実現しています

where the dual engine of the two superpowers

２つの超大国という ２つの原動力が

are working together

力を合わせ

to drive the fastest revolution in technology

これまで人類が経験してきた中で

that we have ever seen as humans.

最も急速な技術革命を 引き起こしています

And this will bring tremendous wealth,

そして これは巨大な富を もたらすでしょう

unprecedented wealth:

かつてない富です

16 trillion dollars, according to PwC,

PwCによれば 2030年に

in terms of added GDP to the worldwide GDP by 2030.

世界のGDPの総額に AIが寄与する金額は16兆ドルです

It will also bring immense challenges

仕事がAIに代替される 可能性という意味では

in terms of potential job replacements.

大きな課題もあります

Whereas in the Industrial Age

産業革命期には 仕事がどんどん生み出されました

it created more jobs

熟練した職人の仕事が 組み立てラインの 各工程へと分割されたことで

because craftsman jobs were being decomposed into jobs in the assembly line,

より多くの仕事が生まれたのです

so more jobs were created.

ところがAIは組み立てラインの 仕事をすべて

But AI completely replaces the individual jobs

ロボットに置き換えてしまいます

in the assembly line with robots.

工場だけではありません

And it's not just in factories,

トラックや車の運転手

but truckers, drivers

電話セールスや カスタマーサービスの仕事―

and even jobs like telesales, customer service

そして血液学者や 放射線科医もです

and hematologists as well as radiologists

この先 15年で

over the next 15 years

これらの仕事は徐々に 人工知能に置き換えられていくでしょう

are going to be gradually replaced

そして 創造性を必要とする仕事だけが―

by artificial intelligence.

And only the creative jobs --

私も安全圏に入らないと なりませんからね

(Laughter)

そう 創造的な仕事は なくせません

I have to make myself safe, right?

なぜならAIは 最適化はできても 創造はできないからです

Really, the creative jobs are the ones that are protected,

しかし 仕事の喪失よりも もっと深刻なのは

because AI can optimize but not create.

意義の喪失です

But what's more serious than the loss of jobs

なぜなら産業革命の仕事観は

is the loss of meaning,

仕事こそが 私達の存在意義であり 人生の意味を決めるのは仕事であると

because the work ethic in the Industrial Age

私達を洗脳してきたからです

has brainwashed us into thinking that work is the reason we exist,

私はそのような仕事中心の考え方を 自らにあてはめようとする典型でした

that work defined the meaning of our lives.

信じられないほど働きづめでした

And I was a prime and willing victim to that type of workaholic thinking.

分娩室で妻を置いて 出ていきかけたのも

I worked incredibly hard.

投資した起業家たちと共に 996で働いたのも そのためです

That's why I almost left my wife in the delivery room,

ところが 私の仕事への執着は

that's why I worked 996 alongside my entrepreneurs.

数年前 突然終わりを迎えました

And that obsession that I had with work

ステージ４の悪性リンパ腫と 診断されたのです

ended abruptly a few years ago

このPET検査の画像は 20以上の悪性腫瘍が火の玉のように

when I was diagnosed with fourth stage lymphoma.

The PET scan here shows over 20 malignant tumors

それは私の野心を溶かし去りました

jumping out like fireballs,

しかし それ以上に大切なのは

melting away my ambition.

私が人生を見つめ直す 転機になったことです

But more importantly,

あと数か月の命かもしれないと 知ったことで

it helped me reexamine my life.

どれだけ懸命に働き 成果を得たかを

Knowing that I may only have a few months to live

自分の価値の基準とするのは

caused me to see how foolish it was

愚かなことだと 気づきました

for me to base my entire self-worth

私の優先順位は まったく間違っていました

on how hard I worked and the accomplishments from hard work.

家族をおろそかにしていました

My priorities were completely out of order.

父は亡くなっていましたが

I neglected my family.

大切に想っていると 伝えたことはありませんでした

My father had passed away,

母は認知症で 私のことを もう息子だと分かってくれません

and I never had a chance to tell him I loved him.

子供達の成長にも 立ち会えませんでした

My mother had dementia and no longer recognized me,

化学療法を受けていた頃

and my children had grown up.

ブロニー・ウェアの本を読みました

During my chemotherapy,

死の床にある人々の 最期の願いや後悔を書いた本です

I read a book by Bronnie Ware

彼女は 人は死の間際に

who talked about dying wishes and regrets of the people in the deathbed.

「もっと懸命に働いていれば」と 後悔することなどないと知りました

She found that facing death,

後悔するのは 愛する人たちと もっと一緒にいればよかったとか

nobody regretted that they didn't work hard enough in this life.

大切に想う気持ちを 伝えていればということだけでした

They only regretted that they didn't spend enough time with their loved ones

幸いなことに 現在私の腫瘍は寛解しています

and that they didn't spread their love.

So I am fortunately today in remission.

だからまたTEDに戻って

生き方を変えたことを 皆さんにお伝えできます

So I can be back at TED again

私は今は965しか働きません

to share with you that I have changed my ways.

たまに996ですが 普段は965です

I now only work 965 --

母の近くに引っ越し

occasionally 996, but usually 965.

たいてい妻を 私の出張先に連れて行きます

I moved closer to my mother,

子供達が休みに入って 実家に戻らなければ 私が会いに行きます

my wife usually travels with me,

この新しい生き方が

and when my kids have vacation, if they don't come home, I go to them.

自分にとって

So it's a new form of life

愛がどれほど大切か 気づかせてくれました

that helped me recognize

死に直面して 私の人生は変わりましたが

how important it is that love is for me,

そのおかげで AIが 人類にどれだけ影響を与え

and facing death helped me change my life,

人類と共にどう働き どう共存すべきか

but it also helped me see a new way

新たな視点を得られました

of how AI should impact mankind

AIは実際に 単純労働を どんどん奪っていますが

and work and coexist with mankind,

そういう仕事が 私達の全てではありません

that really, AI is taking away a lot of routine jobs,

私達の存在理由は愛です

but routine jobs are not what we're about.

私達が生まれたばかりの 赤ちゃんを抱く時

Why we exist is love.

一目で愛を感じます

When we hold our newborn baby,

困っている人を助ける時

love at first sight,

人間だけが 愛を与え 受けとめることができます

or when we help someone in need,

それが私達とAIとの違いです

humans are uniquely able to give and receive love,

SFが描くものとは違って

and that's what differentiates us from AI.

AIは愛情を持たないと 自信をもって言えます

Despite what science fiction may portray,

アルファ碁が世界王者 柯潔に勝った時

I can responsibly tell you that AI has no love.

柯潔が涙を流し 囲碁を愛おしんでいたのに対し

When AlphaGo defeated the world champion Ke Jie,

アルファ碁は 勝利したことに何も幸せを感じず

while Ke Jie was crying and loving the game of go,

もちろん 愛する人を 抱擁したいとも思いませんでした

AlphaGo felt no happiness from winning

では AIの時代に私達人間は

and certainly no desire to hug a loved one.

AIとの違いを どう打ち出せばいいのでしょう？

So how do we differentiate ourselves

先程 創造性の有無について お話ししました

as humans in the age of AI?

もちろん それも１つの 可能性ですが

We talked about the axis of creativity,

更に 新しい視点を 紹介したいと思います

and certainly that is one possibility,

思いやり、愛、共感力と 私達が呼んでいるものです

and now we introduce a new axis

これらはAIにないものです

that we can call compassion, love, or empathy.

AIが単純労働を奪っていく一方で

Those are things that AI cannot do.

人間は 思いやりのある仕事を作れるし そうすべきだと考えたいのです

So as AI takes away the routine jobs,

そんな仕事がいくつあるのかと 思うかもしれませんが

I like to think we can, we should and we must create jobs of compassion.

考えてみてください

You might ask how many of those there are,

その転換を実行していくために たくさんのソーシャルワーカーが

but I would ask you:

必要になると思いませんか？

Do you not think that we are going to need a lot of social workers

より多くの人により多くの医療を 届けるために

to help us make this transition?

思いやりのある介護士が 大勢必要になると思いませんか？

Do you not think we need a lot of compassionate caregivers

子供達がこの素晴らしい新世界で

to give more medical care to more people?

生き抜き成功するために

Do you not think we're going to need 10 times more teachers

教師の数を10倍にするべきだと 思いませんか？

to help our children find their way

新しく得られた富で

to survive and thrive in this brave new world?
