seeing how they respond to the question "How are you?"

"How are you?" の質問に対し、どのように返事をするのか？

Back in middle school, during English classes, you were taught to say,

昔中学校の英語の授業では、"How are you?" と聞かれたら、

"I'm fine thank you and you?"

"I'm fine thank you and you?"「元気です、あなたはどうですか？」

when you were asked "How are you?"

と返事をするように教わってきたと思います。

But only recently, it's been pointed out that

ネイティブはそんな返事の仕方しないよ、

no native speakers respond that way, but is that really true?

って最近は言われていますが、本当にそうなのでしょうか？

Then, how DO they respond?

だったら、ネイティブはどのように返事をするのか？

I'm good. I'm great. I'm OK.

I'm good. 「元気です」I'm great. 「すごくいいです」I'm OK.「まぁまぁです。」

I asked "How are you?" to 12 Americans

ロスに住んでる 12 人のアメリカ人に "How are you?"

who live in L.A.

の質問をしてみました。

Note that the Americans who were asked the question were not told what the question was beforehand,

質問されたアメリカ人は何を聞かれるか分からずに今回協力してもらいましたので、

so the response should come out pretty natural.

返事はかなりナチュラルだと思います。

I have gotten some unexpected responce.

私も予想してない意外な返事をもらいました。

Now, I asked "How are you?" to some of the Japanes people who live in L.A.

次にロスに住んでる日本人に "How are you?" の質問を聞いてみました。

This is how they respond.

さあ、どう返事したのでしょうか？どうぞ！

Hi Masako-san, how are you?

やあ、まさこさん、元気？

Hi, how are you?

こんにちは、元気ですか？

I'm good. How's everything going?

元気よ、最近どう？

That's good. Nice.

それはよかった。

How (are) you doing?

元気？

Good. How (are) you doing?

元気だよ、そっちは？

Pretty good man. What are you up to?

元気だよ、今日の予定は？

Well um I'm here enjoying myself.

僕はここで楽しんでるよ。

How are you?

元気ですか？

Hi. Good.

Yeah I'm a little tired.

えぇっと、少し疲れてます。

A little tired today?

今日は少し疲れてるのですか？

Yeah but it's OK.

やあ、元気だよ。

How's everythig going today?

今日一日どう？

Probably(?) great.

たぶん（？）いいよ。

Probably great? Are you having a good week?

たぶんいい？今週はいい一週間を過ごしてますか？

Yes I do.

うん、私はする（？）よ。

9 out of 12 people didn't answer the question "How are you?"

12 人中 9 人が "How are you?" の質問に答えず、

but responded "Hey Jun." or "Hey, how are you?"

"Hey Jun." や "Hey, how are you?" と質問を聞き返しました。

In other words, we have found that "How are you?" is

要するに、"How are you?" は "Hi / Hello" のように

used as a greeting like "Hi / Hello."

簡単な挨拶がわりとして使われることが発見しました。

Apart from that, there were three people who responded "I'm good."

そのほか、"I'm good." と返事をした人が 3 人、

and one person each for "Excellent." "Super." "Alright." "Fine."

"Excellent." "Super." "Alright." "Fine." の返事が一個ずつでした。

I only asked 12 Americans who live in L.A. in this video,

今回のロサンゼルスに住んでる 12 人のアメリカ人に質問した

so it's only a tiny sample,

本当に小さな小さなサンプルなので、

therefore I can't state anything conclusive here,

決定的なことは言えませんが、

but one thing we can say is, the question "How are you?" is

"How are you?" の質問が "Hello." と同じような感覚で使われてることは

used as "Hello"

否定できないでしょう。

People who responded to the question "How are you?" in all kinds of ways

また、"How are you?" の質問に答えた人は、

such as "I'm good." "I'm super." "Excellent." "I'm doing alright." "I'm fine."

"I'm good." "I'm super." "Excellent." "I'm doing alright." "I'm fine." など、

so there is no one right respond to the question.

色々な返事の仕方をし、これっと言える正しい返事の仕方はありません。

The safest way to respond to the quesion would be "I'm good."

もっとも無難な返事は、"I'm good." になりますが、

but it also depends on your preference,

これも個人差によりますので、

so pick one that you feel most comfortable saying.

自分にとって最も言いやすい表現が正しい返事の仕方になります。

Lastly, I would like to add one more thing. When you want to ask back how they are doing,

で最後に、もう一つ加えたいことがあるのですが、相手に質問を聞き返すときは、

don't use "And you?" but use someting like "How are you?" or "How about you?"

"And you?" を使わずに、"How are you?" とか "How about you?" と

They sound more natural.

聞き返すのが最もナチュラルです。
