In this video I'll help you learn some English words and phrases

that will help you talk about two of the most common pets: cats and dogs.

Which one do you wanna talk about first?

どちらから話しましょうか？

In English we often say, “Are you a cat lover or a dog lover?”

英語では、よく「猫派（猫愛者）ですか？犬派（犬愛者）ですか？」や

“Are you a cat person or a dog person?”

「猫好きですか？犬好きですか？」と言います

This is how we describe the difference between people who love cats, and people who love dogs.

こう言った言い方をして、猫が好きな人と犬が好きな人の差を出しています。

Myself, I have to say, I'm not sure which I am.

僕自身は、はっきりいうと、どちらかわかりません。

In some ways I like cats because they're quiet, they kinda sit by themselves,

猫が好きな時もあります。理由は猫は静かで、1人で座っていたり、

and they're just in general a calm animal.

おとなしく、穏やかな動物であることです。

But I also like the excitement of a dog.

でも犬のエキサイトな部分も好きです。

We have a dog, his name is Oscar.

僕は犬を飼っていて、名前はオスカーです。

I'll try to find a picture of him to put in this video.

And Oscar is just a great farm dog.

オスカーは農場犬です。

He's a dog who lives mostly outside, but he is allowed in the front entrance of our home.

外で飼っていますが、玄関への出入りはできます。

So in some ways he's also a house dog.

But let's talk about some things about dogs.

なので、多少は家庭犬ですね。

Dogs eat dog food that they eat out of a dog bowl.

では早速犬について話してみましょう。

When dogs make sounds we say that they either bark or growl.

犬は「dog food : ドッグフード」を、「dog bowl : ドッグボール」から食べます。

I'm gonna bark here to to make the sound barking sounds like “ruff, ruff” and growling is “grrrrr”.

犬が音をだすことは、英語では「bark : 吠える」「growl : 唸る」を使います。

Couple of interesting things about dogs, we call them man's best friend in English.

「bark : 吠える」の音がどんなものなのか、実際に僕が吠えて見ましょう、「わんわん」そして

It's a phrase that we use because dogs have been with people for so long that they are man's best friend.

「growl : 唸る」は「うーー」

Another interesting fact, the feet of a dog are called paws.

犬の面白いことは、英語では「犬は人間の一番の友」という言い方があります。

A baby dog is called a puppy.

これは、犬が人間と長く共存してきたため、

And there's a couple of things you can do with a dog.

犬は人間の一番の友だということです。

You can take your dog for a walk.

もう一つ、犬の足は「paws:足」と言います。

When you take a dog for a walk you use what we call in English a leash.

犬の赤ちゃんは「puppy : 子犬」です。

You have your dog on a leash.

犬と一緒にできることがいくつかありますね。

And another thing about dogs is you can pet your dog, dogs like to have their ears scratched.

犬の散歩です。

So you can pet your dog, you can scratch your dog's ears.

犬を散歩するときに使うリードの紐は、英語では「leash : リード」と呼ばれています。

A lot of times a dog will have a dog mat that they lay on when they're in the house.

犬をリードに繋げる

You can also teach your dog to do tricks.

また、犬は「pet : 撫でる」ことができますね。犬は耳を「scratch : 掻く」のが好きですね。

You may teach your dog to sit, you may teach your dog to roll over, or you may teach your dog to beg

なので、犬を「pet : 撫でる」、耳を「scratch : 掻く」です。

and I'll try to find a picture of this to put up here.

家の中で、犬が寝そべることができるように「dog mat : 犬用マット」がありますね。

When a dog begs usually you give your dog a dog treat which is a small little piece of dog food.

犬に「tricks : 芸」を教えることもできますよ。

Dogs can go to school, in English we call that obedience school.

「sit : おすわり」「roll over : ごろん」「beg : おねだり」などを教えることができます。

When your dog's sick you take your dog to the vet, (or the veterinarian).

When I was younger we would take our dog to a vet, or veterinarian, vet is the short form.

そして、犬が「beg : おねだり」した時にあげるのが「dog treat : おやつ」で、

Also when you go on vacation, you may actually take your dog to a kennel.

小さい犬のご飯のことですね。

And you may board your dog at a kennel, which means you bring your dog to a place where

犬は学校に行くこともできますよ。英語では「obedience school : 訓練学校」と言います。

they will take care of your dog while you are on vacation.

犬が病気の時は「vet (veterinaria) : 獣医」に連れて行きますね、

So that's a little bit about dogs, let's talk about cats.

僕が幼い時、犬を「vet (veterinaria) : 獣医」に連れて行っていました。「vet」は「veterinarian」の省略です。

Cats are an entirely different animal, literally!

そして休暇で長期出かける時に、犬を「kennel : 犬のホテル」に連れて行きますね。

Cats do not walk using a leash, I know some people do, but cats generally don't like leashes.

「kennel : 犬のホテル」に犬を「board : 預け」ます、つまり、犬の世話をしてくれる場所に

A baby cat is called a kitten.

連れて行き、家を開ける間、お世話してもらうということです。

When you have a cat and it lives in your house you usually will have a litter box where they can go to the bathroom,

以上が犬についてでした、今度は猫について話しますよ。

and you will probably have cat toys or a scratching post for them to scratch their nails on.

猫は全く違う生き物ですね、文字通り！

We also say that cats have paws, just like dogs.

猫はリードで散歩はしません、する人もいますが、猫は基本的にリードが嫌いです。

So a cat's feet are called paws.

The two sounds a cat makes are they can “meow”

猫の赤ちゃんは「kitten : 子猫」と呼ばれます。

and there was actually a cat up here with me earlier that said, “meow”.

猫を家の中で飼っている場合、「litter box : 猫用トイレ」というものをおきますね。これは

And when you pet a cat they can purr.

トイレのことです。また、猫の「cat toys : おもちゃ」や爪を引っ掻くための「scratching post : 爪とぎ棒」

It's a hard sound to make, I'll try to make it, but “purrrrrrrrr” “purrrrrrrr”.

を持っている方も多いでしょう。

So a cat makes a purring sound.

また、猫でも犬と同じく、「paws:足」をつかいます。

You can hear a cat purr when you pet them and when they're happy.

なので、猫の足も「paws:足」です。

A cat eats cat food.

猫がだす音は「meow : にゃー」です、先ほど猫が

That's the food that you would feed to a cat.

「meow : にゃー」と鳴いていましたね。

When a cat gets sick, just like a dog, you would bring the cat to a vet or veterinarian,

そして、猫を「pet:撫でる」と猫は「purr : ゴロゴロ（猫が喉をならす音）」という音をだしますね。

that's the longer form of the word.

なかなかマネするのは難しいのですが、やってみましょう「purrrrrrrrr : ゴロゴロ」

But what do you do to play with cats?

なので、猫は「purr : ゴロゴロ」をいう音を出します。

You can't play fetch with a cat, you can't teach a cat to roll over.

猫を撫でていて、猫が気持ちがっている時にこの音を聞くことができます。

You can sit with a cat.

猫は「cat food : キャットフード」を食べます。

Cats are very, very loving animals to their owners.

これは猫に食べさせする餌のことです。

And sometimes it's just enjoyable to sit with a cat beside you and pet the cat while the cat purrs.

猫が病気になったときは、犬と同じ、「vet (veterinarian) : 獣医」に連れて行きます。

It's a very calming feeling for human beings.

veterinarianは正式な長い言い方ですね。

Sometimes a cat will rub up against your leg when they want attention

では、猫とどうやって遊ぶのでしょうか？

especially if it's your cat and they love you.

猫と「fetch : キャッチ」で遊ぶことはできません、猫に「roll over:ごろん」も教えることはできないですね。

They'll rub up against your leg to say, “Hey pet me!”

猫と座ることはできますね。

“Hey sit with me!

猫は飼い主に愛情を注いでくれる動物です。
