We have people who succeed, and people who don't.

成功する人としない人がいます。

Competition is fierce, and everybody wants to be "ahead of the pack".

競争は熾烈で、誰もが「先頭に立ちたい」と思っています。

So what does this idiom mean?

First, let's talk about the word "pack".

まず、「パック」という言葉について。

In English, we say pack when we are referring to a body of competitors

英語では、競争相手の体を指すときにパックと言います。

following the leader in a race or competition.

So just picture a group or runners, or a pack, chasing the leader of a race.
