  • Essay question types. In IELTS task 2, you are required to write an essay of

  • 250 words in a relatively formal style, in 40 minutes. When it comes to

  • categorizing the questions,

  • it is hard to do as they vary in topics and different questions require

  • different approaches. For example, the question may ask you if you agree or

  • disagree with something or to what extent you agree with it.

  • Another question might ask you if advantages of something outweigh

  • disadvantages. Some questions ask you to discuss both views and then give your own

  • opinion, yet some simply ask you to discuss without giving your opinion. Some

  • "Although some people say it takes away some of our freedom, smoking should be

  • banned in all public places.

  • Do you agree or disagree?" "Some people say that advertising encourages us to buy

  • things that we really do not need. Others say that advertisements tell us about

  • new products that may improve our lives. Which viewpoint

  • do you agree with?" "People attend college or

  • university for many different reasons ( for example, new experiences, career

  • preparation, increased knowledge). Why do you think people attend college or

  • university?" Look at the questions closely. All these questions ask you to pick a

  • side and argue your opinion. They all are argument questions. You have to justify

  • your position and convince your reader. Type 2. Discussion. This type of

  • questions asks you to think about two different views...
