Essay question types. In IELTS task 2, you are required to write an essay of
250 words in a relatively formal style, in 40 minutes. When it comes to
categorizing the questions,
it is hard to do as they vary in topics and different questions require
different approaches. For example, the question may ask you if you agree or
disagree with something or to what extent you agree with it.
Another question might ask you if advantages of something outweigh
disadvantages. Some questions ask you to discuss both views and then give your own
opinion, yet some simply ask you to discuss without giving your opinion. Some
questions may ask you to present causes of problems and suggest solutions. Here,
I'd like to suggest a simple way to categorize questions effectively and
simply into three types.
Let's have a look at the first type. Type 1. Argument. This type of questions asks
you to take a stance and justify your position by giving well-supported
arguments. Common examples of this type of questions include phrases such as
"Do you agree or disagree/
to what extent do you agree or disagree/ which do you consider more important/
what's your opinion/ why do you think this happens?" Let's take a look at type 1
question examples. "Using a computer every day can have more negative than
positive effects on your children. Do you agree or disagree?"
"Although some people say it takes away some of our freedom, smoking should be
banned in all public places.
Do you agree or disagree?" "Some people say that advertising encourages us to buy
things that we really do not need. Others say that advertisements tell us about
new products that may improve our lives. Which viewpoint
do you agree with?" "People attend college or
university for many different reasons ( for example, new experiences, career
preparation, increased knowledge). Why do you think people attend college or
university?" Look at the questions closely. All these questions ask you to pick a
side and argue your opinion. They all are argument questions. You have to justify
your position and convince your reader. Type 2. Discussion. This type of
questions asks you to think about two different views...
