I feel an absolute obligation to serve.

うちの家系はみんな軍人なんだ

Military service in my family goes all the way back to

started with my grandfather, his pocket knife.

いつも思うよ こんなので何が切れたんだって

I always wondered what the heck did he ever cut with this thing?

軍人になるって 疑いもしなかったよ

There was never a moment where I thought I wouldn't become a soldier.

イラクに2回行った ヘリのパイロットとしてね

I did two tours in Iraq as a helicopter pilot.

優秀なパイロットでした

I knew he was an amazing pilot.

航空学校でも成績トップで 彼の腕なら大丈夫って思ってました

He was the top of his class in flight school, so

車の運転だって すごく上手なんだから

I was always very confident in his piloting abilities.

毎日がカオスだった

He always reminds me of that as well, when we're driving.

地上部隊や他のパイロットから 3つも4つも無線が来て

I'm right at home in the chaos.

頭を瞬時に 切り替えないといけない

You've got three to four radios, ground guys talking, wing men talking,

そしてついに負傷した

In an instant your brain needs to be able to shift,

パイロットとして 飛べなくなったんだ

but then I got injured.

イラクから送還され 3人の子供と暮らすことになりました

And that caused me to lose my ability to fly.

昨日まで兵士だったのに

He was literally pulled out of Iraq and dropped home with three kids.

タグを剥がされて 退役軍人として座ってろって

One day you're a soldier, and then over night

退役軍人が何かも教えてくれない

they rip off that tag and slap veteran on your chest.

何もわからない

And they don't really tell you what veteran means.

学生時代は 数学が得意だったんだ

What is a veteran, what is it going to be to be a veteran?

周りが感心するくらい

Before I went in the military,

数学がわかると 万物を理解できるからね

math was the thing where people were like:

それで物理の学位でも取ろうかって

"Hey, you are really, really good at this."

でも数学ができなくなってたの

It's the thing that helps me understand the universe.

数字が頭の中で ごちゃごちゃになるって

I thought: "Okay, I'll go get a physic degree of some kind."

診断は外傷性脳損傷

He couldn't do it, he couldn't get the math right

脳震とう後症候群ってやつだ

and he said things were just getting jumbled up in his head.

ただ数学が好きで やっていたころが懐かしい

I was diagnosed with traumatic brain injury,

仕方ないから小学生レベルの 算数からやり直すことにしたよ

some people call it concussion syndrome.

足し算とか引き算とかね

I missed math, I mean I loved just doing math

ピッツバーグ大学の 工学課程に出願して合格したんだ

for the sake of doing math.

他の退役軍人や 家族の役に立ちたいと思って

And so, I retaught myself a new way of doing math.

ポテトとベーコンと焼いて

I went back and started from literally elementary school level math,

私がやるの？

addition and subtraction type stuff.

ああ 頼んだぞ

I applied to Pitt and was accepted to the engineering program

実は息子が自閉症で それが少し気がかりなんだ

and wanted to see if I could be involved in some engineering

彼の存在のほぼすべてが 自閉症に左右されてる

helping veterans, and helping the people I care about.

トリスタンはほとんど 話せないんだ

A roast with potatoes and bacon.

「どうした？」 「もう...」

Is that my job?

もういらないなら いらないでいいんだよ

That's your job for the time being here.

彼にも夢や希望があると思う

The fact that my son has autism is just one little part of me.

何を考えてるか こんなに知りたいのに

But almost his entire existence is defined by that autism.

わかってあげられないんだ

息子が自立するには こういうのが必要だと思ったよ

I'm sure that he has dreams and aspirations just like everybody else.

リハビリ工学を調べたら 最初にピッツバーグ大学が出てきて

It's hard to want so badly to know what they're thinking

ここに行くしかないと思ったんだ

and to not be able to.

I thought: "Man, if my son's ever going to be independent,

he's going to have to have these kind of things around him."

I you look up rehabilitation engineering,

the first thing that pops up is a place near Pittsburgh,

and I thought: "Man, I got to go be a part of that."

I had to prepare the software to support the research that we do.

We were incredibly inefficient on the computing side,

仕事の意味が 見える瞬間があるんだ

so the biggest change I think that I've helped to make is

機械とソフトウェアだけだった所に 突然被験者が加わる

to sort of standardize the technologies we use,

人が実際に 使ってみてくれる

so that they're not a barrier.

人生を変えた先に こんなに大きな感動が待ってるなんて

Android is this underlying platform that you can just do anything with.

退役したって奉仕は終わらない 形が変わるだけなんだ

It has such an active community of people designing and innovating,

デビー？

so that we can bring in somebody else's tools to solve a problem,

子供たちは強い 私よりずっと

so that we don't have to learn a new technology each time,

そのうち自分で問題を 解決できるようになり

we can just start working.

私の助けは いらなくなるだろう

The type of person that I think has a propensity to join the military,

そうなればもう 何も心配することはない

has a feeling of service and commitment

息子と話せるようになるかって？

to something greater than themselves.

毎日考えるのはそのことさ

Sometimes you get so close to the process itself.

テクノロジーで世界を良くしたいすべての人に

Everything is wires and ones and zeros and

all of a sudden you get to the subject trials.

You have a human being come in and start using your product.

You see the potential for it to change your life

and all of a sudden it's this big wow moment.

I realized the service doesn't end when you get out of the military,

it just changes.

They're so tough, my children.

They're so much tougher than I am.

Every now and then, I'll see them solve a problem and I'm like:

"Man, if they can do that, they're going to be just fine."

Those moments come to me and I feel such peace all of a sudden.

Will I ever get to talk to my son?

That's something I think about every day.

Of course I'm hopeful.

And that's part of why I became an engineer,

it's part of why I got into this field,

is that I'm not going to sit around and wait

for somebody else to fix the problem.

There's not a minute to be wasted

thinking about anything, but the good things that we can do.
