American accents have been evolving for hundreds of years.

アメリカの訛りは何百年もの時間を経て発達してきました。

While Americans sound very different today, here's where some of those iconic accents got their start.

最近のアメリカ訛りは大分変化してきていますが、代表的な初期訛りを見ていきましょう。

Let's start with New England, which was one of the first US regions to develop its own American-English accent.

New England. で発達したのがイギリス風アメリカ訛りの始まりです。

Today, a speaker from New England might say, "Were you gonna plagiarize the whole thing for us?"

今日では、New England の人は「Were you gonna plagiarize the whole thing for us？（これをパクろうとしてたわけ？）」とか

"Do you have any thoughts of your own on this matter?"

「Do you have any thoughts of your own on this matter?（これについて何かあんた言うことはないの？）」

"Is that your thing?"

「Is that your thing?（あんたのものなわけ？）」

"You come into a bar, you read some obscure passage and you pretend, pawn it off as your own?"

「You come into a bar, you read some obscure passage and you pretend, pawn it off as your own?（たまたま入ったバーでよく分からないフレーズを読んで、自分が考え出したかのようなフリをするわけ？）」

For such a geographically small area, New York City certainly has a bunch of distinctive accents.

ニューヨークは地理的には小さなエリアですけど、たくさんの分かりやすい訛りが存在します。

But in general, its accents evolve from a mixture of its Dutch and English roots, and numerous waves of immigration.

ただし一般的には、ここの訛りはオランダとイギリス移民ののルーツから派生しています。

A modern speaker from New York probably won't sound like what you hear in the movies.

近代のニューヨーカーの訛りは映画で聞くようなものではないと思います。

"Hey, I'm walkin' here! I'm walkin' here!"

「Hey, I'm walkin' here! I'm walkin' here!（オイ、俺がここ歩いてんだよ！）」

They're more likely to say, Deep Dish Pizza is not only not better than New York Pizza, it's not pizza.

どっちかというと、「Deep Dish Pizzaはニューヨークピザほど美味しくないだけでなく、そもそもピザですらないですよ」って言うでしょうね。

New York's New Jerseyan and Pennsylvanian neighbors sounded quite different.

ニューヨークに隣接しているニュージャージーとペンシルバニアの訛りは大分違います。

Nowadays, someone from Philly might say, "We're your regular family."

最近ではフィラデルフィアの人は「We're your regular family（うちらはみんな家族だぜ）」とか

"We watch the Phillies on TV, we go down to the Jersey shore."

「TV でフィリーズの試合を見て、ジャージーの浜辺に行ってさ」

"But when we want great hoagies, discount prices on beer, and a great atmosphere, we go to Lee's Hoagies in Horsham, PA."

「でも美味しいロールパンを食べたくなったり、安いビールを飲みたくなって、雰囲気のいい場所で食事をってなったら、ホーシャムにある Lee's Hoagies に行くんだ」みたいな感じのノリです。

Let's take a look at what went on down south.

では、南部を見てみましょう。

The southern coast of the United States has a variety of different accents.

アメリカ南海岸にはたくさんの訛りが存在します。

One for example, is Southern Coastal White.

例としては Southern Coastal White 訛りがあります。

"What concerns me about the American Press is this endless, endless attempt to label the guy some kind of kook."

「アメリカの報道ではこの男を変人呼ばわりしているのですが、それが心配ですね」

Other southern dialects preserve some of the original remnants to this day.

その他の南部訛りは今日でも昔ながらの発音を受け継いでいます。

"They come over here and get the oysters and clam and go fishin' because they right down the road, they right in Brunswick, or Savannah, or Jacksonville."

「よく牡蠣とかアサリを採って釣りにも行く人が多いですね。すぐそこで採れるから。Brunswick とか Savannah、Jacksonville とかね」

Much later, a wave of African Americans migrated from the American South to urban centers in the North, mixing their accents together.

大分後になって、アフリカ系アメリカ人が南部から北部の都市部に移り住んで訛りが混合されました。

"Being a kid from New York City, I mean, from Brooklyn and my aunt, God bless her soul, she used to always take me to the Rockettes."

「ニューヨークで生まれ育ったから、まあ Brooklyn だけどさ、叔母さんが大好きなんだけど昔はよく Rockettes に連れて行ってくれたんだ」

"You know, the Easter show and the Christmas show."

The Ulster Scots had a significant influence on many American dialects in the South and the West.

アルスター・スコットランド語は南部と西部におけるアメリカ訛りに大きな影響を与えました。

Most of the original accent has disappeared, and today, an American from Tennessee might sound like this:

オリジナルの訛りはほとんど消えてなくなりましたが、今日ではテネシー訛りはこんな感じに聞こえます。

"Now, I am just who I am."

「だって、このままの私が本来の私だから」

"I'm not always nice."

「いつもニコニコいい人ではないですよ」

"I choose to be good."

「良い人でいようと選択するんです」

"I choose to have a good attitude because I want people to know

I am a girl of many colors."

「いろんな側面を持った女性だって知って欲しいから」

The Midwest has many diverse accents.

ミッドウェストには多彩な訛りがあります。

As the Appalachian settlers headed west, their accents joined with speech patterns from the North.

アパラチア人が西へ移住する中で、彼らの訛りが北部の話し方と混ざり合いました。

Today, a speaker from the Great Lakes might say, "I was born in the middle of the century, in the middle of the country.

今日では、グレートレイク地方出身の人は「世紀の真ん中、国の真ん中で生まれたんです。

A classic baby boomer."

典型的なベイビーブームの中で生まれた子です」

Or more famously, "We got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses."

またはもっと有名なのは、「ガソリンは満タン、タバコも半分残ってるし、外は真っ暗でもサングラスをかけてる」

While another from Wisconsin, Minnesota, the Dakotas might say, "If either of these men draw, I'm gonna be forced to shoot some people and I don't wanna do that."

ウィスコンシンやミネソタ、ダコタ出身の人は「こいつらのうち誰かが引き分けたら、俺はやりたくないけど誰かを撃つ羽目になるんだ」という感じの訛りでしょう。

Down in Texas, a very distinct accent developed.

テキサスでは、とても独特の訛りが発達しました。

The famous Texan accent that we all know from the movies, "He shot and killed a state senator named Bibbs in Waco, Texas."

映画でおなじみのテキサス訛りは「奴はテキサスのワコに住むビブス州知事を射殺したんだ」ですが

Has started to level out.

クセが無くなっていきました。

Visitors to big cities like Houston might be surprised to hear something more like,

ヒューストンのような大都市を訪れると、意外と

"Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to beautifully capture the profundity of Deep Southern culture."

「南部の深い文化を捉えるために尽力された全ての方に感謝します」という訛りに驚くかもしれません。

Last but not least is the West Coast,

最後になりますが、西海岸訛りです。

which had a very different mix of immigrants compared to the East Coast.

ここは東海岸に比べてとても異なる移民が混在していました。

California doesn't come close to having one distinct accent.

カリフォルニアはとてもじゃないけど訛りを1つには絞れません。

A modern day speaker might sound like,

近代の人たちの訛りはこんな感じです。

"We woke up the next morning on his actual birthday and I told him I wanted to take him somewhere to lunch for his birthday."

「次の日は彼の実際の誕生日だったんで、私が誕生日ランチに連れて行ってあげたいって言ったんです」

Or, "What's so powerful about this novel is everyone has their own interpretation of these characters."

または、「この小説のすごいところは、登場人物の人となりを誰でも自分なりに解釈することができるからなんです」

These are just a handful of American accents.

ここで紹介したのはアメリカ訛りのごく一部ですし、

And they're all still evolving as we speak.

今でも変化を続けています。
