struggled mightily against his greatest challenge yet: Opening a bag of food.

かつてない困難に立ち向かっていました— 食べ物の袋が開かないのです

It'd all started when Thor,

ことの始まりは トールが 人間の従者で俊足のシャールヴィと

along with his fleet-footed human servant, Thjalfi and Loki, the trickster god,

いたずら好きの神ロキとともに

set out on a journey to Jotunheim, land of the giants.

巨人の国ヨトゥンヘイムに 出かけた時のことでした

Along the way, they'd met a giant named Skrymir,

途中で出会った巨人の スクリューミルが同行すると言い

who offered to accompany them and even carry their provisions in his bag.

食糧を自分の荷袋で 運んでやろうと申し出ました

But when they made camp, Skrymir dozed off

ところが野営したとき スクリューミルが眠り込んでしまい

and Thor couldn't untie the sack.

トールには巨人の荷袋を 開けることができません

Frustrated and hungry, Thor tried to wake the giant three times

腹が減り苛立ったトールは 巨人を起こそうと

by striking his head with his hammer, Mjolnir, as hard as he could.

その頭をハンマー「ミョルニル」で 思いっきり３度叩きました

But each time, Skrymir thought it was only a falling acorn

でも その度に巨人は 落ちてきたドングリだと思い

and went back to sleep.

また寝入ってしまいました

The next morning, Skrymir departed

翌朝 スクリューミルと 別れた一行は

and eventually, the travelers reached a massive fortress called Utgard.

ウートガルズという 巨大な砦にたどり着きました

Inside the long hall, they met the king of giants, Utgard-Loki,

長い広間で彼らが対面した 巨人の王ウートガルザ・ロキは

who greeted his guests with a challenge.

挑戦をもって 客人を迎えました

Each of them was to prove they were the best at some particular skill.

それぞれ何かの能力で一番であることを 示せと言うのです

Loki went first, declaring himself the world's fastest eater.

最初にやることになったロキは 自分は世界一の早食いだと言いました

To test him, the king summoned his servant, Logi,

それを確かめるため 王は召使いのロギを呼び出し

and the two were placed at either end of a long trough stuffed with food.

食べ物で満たされた飼い葉桶の 両端に２人を立たせました

Loki ate his way inward with blinding speed.

ロキは目にも留まらぬ早さで 中央に向かって食べ進みましたが

But when the contestants met in the center,

２人が中央で 行き当たったとき

Loki saw that his adversary had not only eaten just as much food,

ロキは相手が食べ物を 同じだけ食べただけでなく

but also the bones and even the trough itself.

骨や飼い葉桶まで 食べていたのを目にしました

Next was Thjalfi, who could outrun anything in the wild.

次のシャールヴィは どんな動物よりも速く走れました

The king summoned an ethereal-looking giant named Hugi,

王が呼び出したのは 精霊のような姿の巨人フギで—

who outraced Thjalfi easily.

あっさりシャールヴィを 負かしてしまいました

But the boy would not give up and demanded a rematch.

負けず嫌いのシャールヴィは 再戦を求めました

This time, Thjalfi finished close behind

再び負けましたが 差はわずかで

and the king admitted he'd never seen a human run so fast.

これほど速く走る人間は 見たことがないと王は認めました

Thjalfi tried a third time, running like his life depended on it,

３度目 シャールヴィは命がけで 必死に走りましたが

but Hugi was even faster than before.

フギはさらに速く走りました

Finally, it was Thor's turn.

最後はトールの番です

The king offered him a drinking horn,

王は角杯を差し出し

saying all his men could drain it in two gulps.

ここの者は皆 ふた息で 飲み干せると言いました

Thor raised it to his lips

杯に口を付けたトールは

and drank the surprisingly cold and salty mead in the longest gulp he could muster.

その驚くほど冷たく しょっぱい酒を一息で飲めるだけ飲みました

Then a second.

それからもう一息

Then a third.

さらにもう一息

But the level of the mead in the horn was only slightly lowered.

しかし角杯の酒の水位が わずかに下がっただけでした

To test Thor's renowned strength, the king offered a seemingly easy challenge.

トールの有名な力の強さを試そうと 王が課したことは たやすく思えるものでした

Lift his pet cat off the ground.

王の飼い猫を 持ち上げるだけです

But this cat was as tall as Thor.

しかしその猫はトールと 同じくらいの丈があり

Every time he tried to lift it, it arched its back,

トールが持ち上げようとしても 猫は背を丸めるばかりで

and straining with all his godly might, he only managed to lift one paw.

全力を出してやっと 足が１つ宙に浮いただけでした

Enraged, Thor demanded to wrestle any of the giants.

頭に来たトールは 誰か巨人と戦わせろと求めました

The king summoned the giants' old nursemaid, Elli.

王が選んだのは 老いた巨人の子守女エリでした

Though the woman looked frail, Thor couldn't overpower her

エリは弱々しく見えましたが トールは組み伏せることができず

and grew weaker the longer he struggled, until he was brought to one knee.

だんだんと力が抜けていき ついには膝をついてしまいました

The three companions prepared to leave, disappointed and humbled.

３人はすっかり気落ちし 屈辱的な気持ちで帰ろうとしましたが

But as the king escorted them out,

王は外へと見送りながら

he revealed that nothing in the castle had been what it seemed.

城の中のものは見た目通り ではないと打ち明けました

Loki lost the eating contest because his opponent, Logi, was wildfire itself,

ロキが早食い競争で負けたのは 相手のロギが「山火事」で

devouring everything in its path.

行く手にあるすべてを 食い尽くすからでした

Thjalfi couldn't outrun Hugi because Hugi was the embodiment of thought,

シャールヴィがフギに勝てなかったのは フギが「思考」を体現したものであり

always faster than action.

常に行動の先を 行くからでした

And even Thor couldn't defeat Elli, or old age,

トールでさえ勝てなかった エリの正体は「老い」で

which weakens everyone eventually.

誰をも やがては 弱くする存在です

As for the other challenges, they had also been illusions.

他のものにしても 同様でした

The drinking horn was filled with the ocean,

角杯を満たしていたのは海で

and Thor had drained enough to cause the tides.

トールが飲んだために 満ち干が起きました

The cat was the serpent that encircles the world,

猫は世界を取り巻く蛇で

and Thor's efforts shifted the earth.

トールが持ち上げたために 地球が傾きました

And Skrymir had been Utgard-Loki in disguise,

スクリューミルは ウートガルザ・ロキの仮の姿で

deflecting Thor's hammer-blows to form valleys in the surrounding mountains.

トールがハンマーで叩いたため まわりの山に谷が刻まれました

The giant congratulated them on their prowess,

巨人の王は３人の力量を 称えましたが

which so frightened him he would never allow them in his land again.

怖れをなして その後２度と 国に入れませんでした

Thor and his companions failed the challenges presented to them.

トールの一行は課された挑戦には 失敗しましたが

But in trying to achieve the impossible,

不可能を成し遂げようとして

they'd pushed themselves harder than ever before

力の限りを尽くし

and changed the world in ways no one had expected.

誰も期待しないような形で 世界を変えたのです
