Erik: So, how did your McKenzie management consulting experience further shape your career
ambitions?
Ken: Oh, so I come from a lower-middle class background. I believe I mentioned my dad wanted
me to be a wallpaper hanger. I was exposed to very few jobs. As far as I knew you could
be a doctor, you could be an orthodontist, a dentist, you could be a wallpaper hanger,
a painter, you could own a retail store. I really didn’t understand what the possibilities
were. As an academic I saw… that opened up some possibilities, but as a management
consultant, “Wow!” You got to see - I was in the throws, in the bowels of some of
these companies. So, some of my clients were very large, multi-national, some of them no
longer exist for various reasons - economic crisis [said under a joking cough]. But, literally
seeing how these large business operated and what the roles were was very fascinating.
It let me start to map out what the possibilities were.
