Giethoorn is just like any normal town.

The people are left with boats,

some can get to their destinations by bike,

or else they'll have to walk.

I am Bert Dedden, vice mayor of Giethoorn,

There are about 2,400 inhabitants and 1,100 houses.

And boats, lots of boats.

On a good day, there are about 500 to 600 boats here in Giethoorn.

That's Jan, one of the town's resident boat builders.

彼はヤン　村の住民で ボート職人の 1 人です

He's known for punters, a flat bottom boat that originated in Giethoorn.

平底ボートで知られています　平底ボートは船底が平らな ヒートホールン発祥のボートです

The punter was created in Giethoorn, but now it's all over the world.

平底船はヒートホールンで生まれたものだけど　今は世界中にあるね

And where there are boats, there are bridges.

そして、ボートがあるところには 橋がつきもの

167 to be exact.

And just like any town, people need their groceries,

また、他の街と同じように　人々は食料品を必要としています

their furniture, their beer, you name it.

家具や、ビールなど ありとあらゆるものをです

But in Giethoorn, they must pass through Anton.

でもヒートホールンでは、すべてアントン経由です

He's the town's bridge guard.

アントンは村の橋の守衛さん

If the bridge guards were to stop, the village would come to a halt.

守衛さんの仕事がストップしてしまったら　村の機能は麻痺してしまうでしょう

On a busy day, we open the bridge for about 300 boats.

忙しい日は 約 300 隻の船を通します

One of those boats is the fire boat.

そんな船の中に 消防船があります

This is Bart and Erik.

これはバートとエリック

Here, in the village of Giethoorn, there are many places that we can't get to by car.

ここ、ヒートホールン村には　車では入っていけない場所がたくさんあります

Many homes are by the water, so we go out to extinguish fires,

家の多くが水のそばにあるので　そこに駆けつけて消化活動を行います

we also save people from drowning, boats from sinking, you name it.

溺れている人や、船の沈没での救助など、なんでもやります

And this is Jan.

そして この人はヤン

He's in charge of maintaining the natural lands around Giethoorn.

ヒートホールン全域の自然地の管理を行っています

All the fields around Giethoorn are reachable by boat,

ヒートホールンの原っぱはすべて ボートで行くことができます

and cows on a boat isn't something we see a lot anymore in Holland,

オランダでボートに乗せられた牛を目にすることは　今ではもう あまりないですが

but in Giethoorn it does still happen.

ヒートホールンでは 今でも見かけますね

But for us it is really just normal.

でも俺たちにとっては ただただ当たり前のこと
