I would spend hours and hours listening to the little beetle

コガネムシたちの言葉に耳を傾けなさい」

rolling a huge ball of dung,

私は何時間もかけて 小さなコガネムシが

and while at it,

糞玉を転がす音を聞いたものです

I heard a variety of environmental sounds.

そうする間に

With the keenest of ears, I would hear family chatter,

周りの様々な音が聞こえてきました

laughter,

聴覚を研ぎ澄ますと 家族のおしゃべりや

the wind howling

笑い声や

and even crickets chirping.

風の唸り声や

All these sounds crisscrossed into each other,

コオロギの鳴き声さえ聞こえてきました

and I would hear rhythm in between.

全ての音が互いに交差すると

Then I would beat my plate with a spoon and my chest with my tiny hands

音の間にリズムが聞こえたものです

trying to recreate what I was hearing.

すると私は お皿をスプーンで叩き 胸を小さな手で叩いて

I have been beating the same plates,

聞いた音を再現しようとしたものです

shakers, drums, pans and so much more ever since

それ以来 私は同じお皿 —

to become a professional drummer

シェイカー、ドラム、スティールパン その他諸々を叩いてきました

and percussionist.

そして

ドラマー兼パーカッショニストとして プロになりました

As I grew up, subconsciously,

I felt a strong urge to hide my newfound hobby.

成長するにつれて 無意識に

Even without it being said out loud,

新しい趣味を隠さなければと 強く思うようになりました

I knew that somehow it was wrong to do what I was doing.

あけすけに言う人はなくとも

In most of the ceremonies,

なぜか自分が間違ったことをしていると 思い込んでいたからです

I noticed that most of the women and girls were not in sight,

ほとんどの儀式では

but when they were,

年齢を問わず 大半の女性が 姿を見せないけれど

I noticed that they would wear their dancing skirts

女性が姿を見せる時は

and shake their waists off,

ダンス用のスカートを履いて

singing, clapping, ululating,

腰を振り

while the men filled up the rhythm section.

歌い 手拍子をし ウルラララと声をあげ

A few years later, I came to understand

一方 男性がリズムを担当していることに 私は気づいていました

what tradition and culture meant,

数年のちに 私は理解するようになりました

and what was considered taboo

伝統や文化が 何を意味し

or otherwise.

何がタブー視され

In the majority of African cultures,

何がタブー視されないかを

women have been forbidden to play drums and percussion

アフリカ文化では ほとんどの場合

for a very long time.

女性が打楽器の演奏を禁じられた歴史は

I believe this taboo stems from the psychological and traditional belief

とても長いです

that the woman is an inferior being.

I grew up hearing that the place of the woman is in the kitchen

女性が男性より劣った存在だという 心理的・伝統的な観念によるものです

or in the other room.

私は こう聞いて育ちました

Mhm?

Women had been brainwashed and led on for so long

until we had fallen victim and actually started believing in this ourselves.

This, coupled with the lack of interest to educate women,

とうとう 犠牲となって 自分でも 本当にそうだと信じるようになりました

played a major, major role

in etching this into our minds.

The sounds of the drum provoke emotion and movement.

大きな大きな役割を果たしました

Essentially, the drum is a very sensual instrument.

鳴り響くドラムの音は 感情と動きを刺激します

Once at a festival, a man asked me

本質的に ドラムは 非常に官能的な楽器です

how I dared put a drum in between my legs.

ある時 祭りで男性が私に言いました

I have been considered loose and dirty for playing an instrument.

「脚の間にドラムを挟むなんて よくやるな」と

I have repeatedly been questioned

私は 楽器を演奏することで 淫らで汚らわしいと思われてきたんです

why I would choose to play drums

繰り返しこう聞かれました

instead of practicing journalism,

which I studied for my undergraduate,

which has been termed "more decent."

大学でジャーナリズムを専攻して

The sight of a woman playing drums enfeebles her,

その方が『まともな』仕事なのに」と

makes her less feminine,

女はドラムを叩くと弱る？

less desirable,

女らしくなくなる？

but all this optimally puts her on a lower social stand.

貰い手がなくなる？

Drumming has essentially represented the strong African heritage,

and its importance can be seen

ドラム演奏は 本質的に 強いアフリカの伝統の象徴であり

in the many aspects of the African tradition.

Many communities encompass drumming in their day-to-day activities,

and still do up to date,

from childbirths to initiation ceremonies,

welcoming ceremonies,

marriages and even burials.

However, this same drum

is disappearing very fast from the music scene,

and the traditional genre is losing its popularity

very quickly amongst the people.

Inspired by the need to preserve this culture,

I am teaching the significance and the importance of the drum

to young boys, women and girls.

私は ドラムのもつ意義や重要性を

In my journey as a percussion teacher,

子供達や女性に教えています

I have realized that very many women

パーカッションの教師としての人生で

actually want to play the drum,

私が気づいたのは 非常に多くの女性が

but at the same time,

実はドラムを叩きたがっていて

they fear it.

それと同時に

Some fear how society will perceive them.

怖れているということでした

Others fear the physical pain that comes with playing.

世間体を怖れる人もいます

Oh yes, it's not that easy.

演奏に伴う肉体的な苦痛に 不安を抱く人もいます

Some, because their spouses don't approve of them,

確かにそんなに簡単ではありません

and others generally fear the responsibility

夫に反対される人もいれば

of being a bearer of culture.

一般に文化の担い手となることの

I believe, or I think that all these fears

責任を怖れる人もいます

are etched in the collective feminine cautiousness

私は こういった怖れの全ては

because when we learn of the atrocities that have happened to women,

女性らしい警戒心全般に 刻み込まれているのだと思います

continentally especially,

なぜなら 女性の身に降りかかった 非道な出来事について知るたび —

it serves as a constant reminder

アフリカで起きたものは 特にそうですが —

that one step out of our designated place

敷かれたレールを 一歩でも踏み外すと

may end up in very serious consequences.

非常に深刻な結果を 招きかねないという危機感を

Well, I use my drum to tell my story and my people's stories.

女性は絶えず感じているからです

My roots shaped me and my culture is here to stay with me.

私は ドラムを使って 自分や周囲の人々の物語を語ります

Women can be custodians of culture, too.

私のルーツが今の私を形成し 私の文化は これからもずっと共にあります

We are born to bring forth life,

女性も 文化の担い手になれます

to nurture it.

私たちは 生まれながらにして

We can definitely preserve our traditions very, very excellently.

生命をもたらし 育む存在です

My drum and I,

私たちは 間違いなく伝統だって 見事に守ることができます

we are here to stay.

私のドラムと私

women have gone to space,

then the same, same women can play the drum
