The essence of isirika

is to make it clear to everybody

that you're your sister's keeper --

you're your brother's keeper.

Mutual responsibility for caring for one another.

A literal, simple English translation would be equal generosity,

but the deep philosophical meaning

is caring, together, for one another.

So how does isirika really happen?

「お互いを共に思いやること」です

I grew up in a farming community

実際どのように イシリカが起こるでしょう？

in western Kenya.

私はケニア西部の

I remember vividly the many times

農村で育ちました

that neighbors would go to a neighbor's home --

鮮やかによく思い出すのは

a sick neighbor's home --

ご近所さんたちが互いの家を訪ね

and harvest their crop for them.

もし病人がいれば

I tagged alongside with my mother to community events

その家族のために 作物を収穫するのです

and to women's events,

母に付き添って コミュニティーのイベントに行き

and had the conversation about vaccinations in school,

女性たちのイベントに行き

building the health center

学校でのワクチン接種や

and really big things --

診療所を建てることや

renewing seeds for the next planting season.

本当に大きなこと—

And often, the community would come together

次の種蒔きの時期に向けた 種の補充について話しました

to contribute money to send a neighbor's child to school --

not only in the country

but to universities abroad as well.

And so we have a surgeon.

The first surgeon in my country came from that rural village.

what isirika did was to be inclusive.

We as children would stand alongside the adults

and give our contributions of money,

just like every adult.

And then I grew up,

went to universities back at home and abroad,

obtained a few degrees here and there,

became organized

and took up international jobs,

working in development,

humanitarian work

isirika began to become small.

It dissipated

and then just disappeared.

In each place,

I gained a new vocabulary.

The vocabulary of donors and recipients.

The vocabulary of measuring impact,

return on investment ...

社会貢献の「影響を測る」ための言葉

projects and programs.

「投資収益率」

Communities such as my childhood community

「事業」「計画」 に対応する言葉です

became referred to as "poor, vulnerable populations."

私が子供時代を過ごしたような コミュニティーは

Those are the communities of which literature speaks about

「貧しく無力な人々」として 言及されていました

as living on less than a dollar a day,

１日１ドル以下の生活と 資料には書かれているコミュニティーで

and they become the targets for poverty eradication programs.

And by the way,

ところで

they are the targets of our first

United Nations' sustainable development goal.

Now, I'm really interested

that we find solutions to poverty

and to the world's other many big problems

because they do exist.

I however think that we could do a better job,

and we could do a better job by embracing isirika.

So let me tell you how.

First, isirika affirms common humanity.

まず イシリカは 人間性が共通であることを認めます

For whatever that you do,

皆さんの職業に関わらず

you begin from the premise that you're human together.

同じ人類であるという 前提から始まります

When you begin that you're human together,

同じ人類であるという ことから始めると

you see each other differently.

お互いの捉え方が違ってきます

You don't see a refugee first

難民であることを 第一には見ないでしょう

and you don't see a woman first

女性であることを 第一には見ないでしょう

and you don't see a person with disability first.

障害者であることを 第一には見ないでしょう

You see a human being first.

人間であることを まず第一に見るでしょう

That is the essence of seeing a person first.

これが まず人を人として 認識することの真髄です

And when you do that,

そうすれば

you value their ideas,

相手のアイディアを尊重し

you value their contribution --

相手の貢献を尊重するでしょう

small or big.

その大きさに関わらず

And you value what they bring to the table.

そしてそれぞれが持ち寄る意見を 尊重します

That is the essence of isirika.

それがイシリカの真髄です

I just want to imagine what it would look like

想像してみたいのです

if everyone in this room --

もしこの会場にいる皆さんが

a medical doctor, a parent,

医者であろうが 親であろうが

a lawyer, a philanthropist,

弁護士であろうが 慈善家であろうが

whatever you are --

あなたが何者であろうと

if you embraced isirika

イシリカを取り入れて

and made it your default.

その考え方を基盤にしたら

What could we achieve for each other?

私たちはお互いのために 何を成し遂げられるでしょう？

What could we achieve for humanity?

私たちは人類のために 何を成し遂げられるでしょう？

What could we achieve for peace issues?

私たちは平和のために 何を成し遂げられるでしょう？

What could we achieve for medical science?

私たちは医療科学のために 何を成し遂げられるでしょう？

Let me give you a couple of hints,

because I'm going to ask you to accompany me

in this process of rebuilding and reclaiming isirika with me.

First, you have to have faith

that we are one humanity,

we have one planet

and we don't have two choices about that.

So there's not going to be a wall that is high enough

to separate humanity.

So give up the walls.

壁なんて諦めましょう

Give them up.

And we don't have a planet B to go to.

So that's really important.

Make that clear;

move onto the next stage.

The second stage: remember,

in isirika, every idea counts.

Bridges have big posters

And third,

isirika affirms

that those who have more really enjoy the privilege of giving more.

It is a privilege to give more.

And this is the time for women to give more for women.

It is the time to give more for women.

Our parents, when they brought in other children to live with us,

私たちの両親は 他の子どもたちを 連れて来て一緒に住ませた時に

they didn't ask our permission.

私たちの意見を 聞いたりしませんでした

They made it clear that they had a responsibility

学校へ行き稼ぐ力があった

because they had gone to school

自分たちに そうする責任があるのは

and they had an earning.

明らかなことだったのです

And they made it clear that we should understand

さらに 両親が明確にしていたのは

that their prosperity was not our entitlement,

彼らの富は 私たち子どもの 生得権ではないということで

and I think that's good wisdom from isirika.

私が思うにこれは イシリカのよい知恵です

We could use that wisdom today, I think, in every culture,

今日 その知恵を使い どの文化だろうと

in every place,

どこでだろうと

passing to the next generation what we could do together.

私たちが一緒に成し得たことを 次世代に引き継ぐのです

I have,

over the years,

encountered isirika in many places,

but what gives me really the passion today

is the work that I do with women all over the world

Global Fund for Womenを通じて

through the Global Fund for Women,

though women's funds

and through women's movements globally.

If you work with women,

女性と共に働くなら

you change every day

あなたは毎日変化します

because you experience them living isirika together in what they do.

イシリカを体現した生き方を 彼女たちとの 活動の中で共に経験するからです

In the work that I do,

私の行っている活動では

we trust women leaders and their ideas.

女性リーダーと そのアイディアを信じます

And we support them with funding so that they can expand,

そして私たちの財政的支援により 彼女たちの活動は拡大し

they can grow

and they can thrive within their own communities.

A woman in 1990 came to the Global Fund with a big idea --

1990年に ある女性が壮大なアイディアを持って グローバルファンドを訪れました

a woman from Mexico by the name of Lucero González.

メキシコからやって来た彼女の名は ルチェロ・ゴンザレスと言いました

She wanted to begin a fund that would support a movement

彼女はメキシコの コミュニティーに根付いた

that would be rooted in the communities in Mexico.

活動を支えるために ファンドを立ち上げたかったのです

And she received a grant of 7,500 US dollars.

そして7,500ドルの融資を受けました

Today, 25 years later,

25年後の今日では

Semillas, the name of the fund,

セミリャスという名のそのファンドは

has raised and spent,

1,780万ドルを調達し

within the community,

それを

17.8 million dollars.

They have impacted over two million people,

and they work with a group of 600,000 women in Mexico.

During the recent earthquake,

they were so well rooted

that they could quickly assess within the community and with others,

what were the short-term needs and what were the long-term needs.

long after the lights have gone off Mexico,

with the communities, with the women,

And that's what I'm talking about:

when we are able to support the ideas of communities

that are rooted within their own setting.

Thirty years ago,

30年前に

there was very little funding that went directly to women's hands

コミュニティーの女性たちの 手に直接渡るのは

in their communities.

ほんの僅かな金額でした

Today we celebrate 168 women's funds

今日では世界中に 168の女性のファンドを

all over the world,

生み出しました

100 of which are in this country.

そのうち100は 私たちの国にあります

And they support --

they support grassroots women's organizations --

community organizations under the leadership of girls and women,

and together we have been able,

collectively,

to give a billion dollars to women and girls-led organizations.

But the challenge begins today.

The challenge begins today

because we see women everywhere organizing as isirika,

including women organizing as isirika in TED.

イシリカはコミュニティーの中で 生き続ける常緑の知恵だからです

Because isirika is the evergreen wisdom that lives in communities.

農村の土着のコミュニティーにも

You find it in indigenous communities,

それがあるのに気づくでしょう

in rural communities.

イシリカが人々の中に深く刻み込むのは

And what it really ingrains in people

信じる力と

is that ability to trust

課題を前に進める力です

and to move the agenda ahead.

ですから 今まで活動を通じて 私が学んだ３つのことを

So, three things that I have learned that I want to share with you

皆さんにシェアしたいのです

through my work.

一つ目は 世界最大級の問題を 解決したいなら

One: if you want to solve the world's biggest problems,

女性や少女に投資するべきだということ

invest in women and girls.

彼女たちが投資を拡大するだけでなく

Not only do they expand the investment,

彼女たちはコミュニティーの皆を世話します

but they care for everyone in the community.

自分たちの必要だけでなく 子どもたちや

Not only their needs but the needs of their children,

コミュニティーの他の人たちや

the needs of the rest of the community,

お年寄りの必要にも気を配ります

the needs of the elderly,

そしてさらに重要なのは

and most important,

彼女たちは 自分を守り—

they protect themselves --

本当に重要なことです—

which is really important --

そして自分たちの コミュニティーを守ります

and they protect their communities.

自分を守る術を知っている女性は

Women who know how to protect themselves

変化を生む意味をわかっています

know what it means to make a difference.

女性と少女への投資を求める 二つ目の理由は

And the second reason that I'm asking you to invest in women and girls

これはこの時代に皆さんができる

is because this is the smartest thing you could ever do

最も賢い行動だからです

at this particular time.

もし私たちが 350兆ドル以上を

And if we are going to have

2030年までに

over 350 trillion dollars

手にするのなら

by 2030,

それらを女性の手に届ける必要があります

those dollars need to be in the hands of women.

私はイシリカと共に育ちました

And so I grew up with isirika.

私の母はイシリカでした

My mother was isirika.

プロジェクトや プログラムではありません

She was not a project or a program.

そして今 皆さんにこれをお伝えします

And now, I pass that to you.
