I was a foreign correspondent in the Middle East

５年前 私は 念願だった仕事を 手にしていました

reporting for ABC News.

But there was a crack in the wall,

a problem with our industry,

that I felt we needed to fix.

You see, I got to the Middle East right around the end of 2007,

which was just around the midpoint

of the Iraq War.

But by the time I got there, it was already nearly impossible

to find stories about Iraq on air.

And of the stories that did make it,

We were missing the stories about Iraq,

the people who live there,

and what was happening to them under the weight of the war.

Afghanistan had already fallen off the agenda.

There were less than one percent of all news stories in 2008

that went to the war in Afghanistan.

It was the longest war in US history,

１％にも満ちませんでした

but information was so scarce

アメリカ史上 最も長い戦争でありながら

that schoolteachers we spoke to

情報は非常に限られていました

told us they had trouble explaining to their students

学校の先生から こんな話も聞きました

what we were doing there,

戦争に加わり 時に死と向き合っている 親を持つ生徒もいるのに

when those students had parents

そこで私たちが何をしているのか

who were fighting and sometimes dying overseas.

情報がなくて 生徒たちに

We had drawn a blank,

and it wasn't just Iraq and Afghanistan.

From conflict zones to climate change

それもイラクや アフガニスタンのことだけではなく

to all sorts of issues around crises in public health,

紛争地帯から気候変動

we were missing what I call the species-level issues,

公衆衛生上の危機に関わる あらゆる問題まで

because as a species, they could actually sink us.

種の存続にも 関わりうるような

And by failing to understand the complex issues of our time,

we were facing certain practical implications.

How were we going to solve problems

どんな意味を持ちうるのか 直面しつつあったのです

that we didn't fundamentally understand,

でも 解決しようがありませんでした

that we couldn't track in real time,

そもそも問題を 理解できていないばかりか

and where the people working on the issues

リアルタイムで状況を 追えていないのですから

were invisible to us

さらに そうした問題に 取り組む人たちのことは

and sometimes invisible to each other?

私たちには見えておらず

When you look back on Iraq,

相手にも 私たちが 見えていなかったかもしれません

those years when we were missing the story,

イラクについて振り返ると

were the years when the society was falling apart,

私たちがイラクのことから 離れてしまっている間に

when we were setting the conditions for what would become the rise of ISIS,

社会が散り散りになっていき

the ISIS takeover of Mosul

それと同時に ISが台頭して

and terrorist violence that would spread

beyond Iraq's borders to the rest of the world.

Just around that time where I was making that observation,

I looked across the border of Iraq

and noticed there was another story we were missing:

the war in Syria.

If you were a Middle-East specialist, you knew that Syria was that important

from the start.

But it ended up being, really,

one of the forgotten stories of the Arab Spring.

I saw the implications up front.

Syria is intimately tied to regional security,

to global stability.

I felt like we couldn't let that become

another one of the stories we left behind.

So I left my big TV job to start a website, called "Syria Deeply."

It was designed to be a news and information source

そこで 大事なテレビの仕事を辞め 「Syria Deeply」を立ち上げました

that made it easier to understand a complex issue,

and for the past four years, it's been a resource

複雑な問題を分かりやすく 伝えるようにしました

for policymakers and professionals working on the conflict in Syria.

この４年間で シリア紛争に関わる―

We built a business model

政策立案者や専門家の 情報源ともなりました

based on consistent, high-quality information,

and convening the top minds on the issue.

一貫性のある質の高い情報をもとにし

And we found it was a model that scaled.

We got passionate requests to do other things "Deeply."

So we started to work our way down the list.

I'm just one of many entrepreneurs,

and we are just one of many start-ups

報道の問題を 直そうとしている起業家は

trying to fix what's wrong with news.

私一人ではありませんし

All of us in the trenches know

that something is wrong with the news industry.

It's broken.

Trust in the media has hit an all-time low.

壊れているんです

And the statistic you're seeing up there is from September --

it's arguably gotten worse.

But we can fix this.

We can fix the news.

でも 直せるんです

I know that that's true.

報道を正せます

You can call me an idealist; I call myself an industrious optimist.

And I know there are a lot of us out there.

We have ideas for how to make things better,

仲間はたくさん いるはずです

and I want to share three of them that we've picked up in our own work.

Idea number one:

we need news that's built on deep-domain knowledge.

１つ目のアイデアです

Given the waves and waves of layoffs at newsrooms across the country,

we've lost the art of specialization.

Beat reporting is an endangered thing.

もはや専門化など していられなくなりました

When it comes to foreign news,

the way we can fix that is by working with more local journalists,

treating them like our partners and collaborators,

not just fixers who fetch us phone numbers and sound bites.

Our local reporters in Syria and across Africa and across Asia

bring us stories that we certainly would not have found on our own.

Like this one from the suburbs of Damascus, about a wheelchair race

that gave hope to those wounded in the war.

Or this one from Sierra Leone,

about a local chief who curbed the spread of Ebola

Or this one from the border of Pakistan,

about Afghan refugees being forced to return home before they are ready,

under the threat of police intimidation.

Our local journalists are our mentors.

帰国を余儀なくされている と伝えました

They teach us something new every day,

現地記者は 私たちの師です

and they bring us stories that are important for all of us to know.

私たちに日々 新しい気づきを与えてくれ

Idea number two:

誰もが知るべき重要なニュースを 届けてくれます

we need a kind of Hippocratic oath for the news industry,

２つ目のアイデアは

a pledge to first do no harm.

報道の世界にも ヒポクラテスの誓いを導入し

人に害を与えない誓いを 立てることです

Journalists need to be tough.

We need to speak truth to power,

ジャーナリストは屈強に

but we also need to be responsible.

権力に対して 真実を語りながらも

We need to live up to our own ideals,

責任を負わなければなりません

and we need to recognize

そして自らの理念に従って行動し

when what we're doing could potentially harm society,

自らの行動が社会を害しないか 注意を払い

where we lose track of journalism as a public service.

ジャーナリズムが 公共サービスであることを

I watched us cover the Ebola crisis.

見失わないように しなければいけません

We launched Ebola Deeply. We did our best.

エボラ危機についても 注意深く報道しました

But what we saw was a public

「Ebola Deeply」を立ち上げ 最善を尽くしました

that was flooded with hysterical and sensational coverage,

しかし世間では

sometimes inaccurate, sometimes completely wrong.

感情的で煽るような報道が 繰り広げられ

Public health experts tell me that that actually cost us in human lives,

不正確であったり 事実無根のものまで ありました

because by sparking more panic and by sometimes getting the facts wrong,

公衆衛生の専門家は こうした報道は 人の命を奪いかねないと言います

we made it harder for people to resolve

パニックを巻き起こしたり 事実を曲げたりすることで

what was actually happening on the ground.

実際に何が起こっているのか

All that noise made it harder to make the right decisions.

人々は把握しづらくなります

We can do better as an industry,

こうした雑音があると 正しい判断もしにくくなるのです

but it requires us recognizing how we got it wrong last time,

産業全体として もっと うまくやれるはずです

and deciding not to go that way next time.

でも そのためには 過ちを犯した過去を振り返り

It's a choice.

同じことを繰り返さないように しないといけません

We have to resist the temptation to use fear for ratings.

まさに 選択です

And that decision has to be made in the individual newsroom

恐怖を煽って視聴率を得ようなどと してはいけません

and with the individual news executive.

そして それは 個々の報道現場で

Because the next deadly virus that comes around

個々の報道責任者が 判断しないといけません

could be much worse and the consequences much higher,

また致死性ウイルスが現れたとき

if we do what we did last time;

前と同じことを してしまったら

if our reporting isn't responsible and it isn't right.

もし報道が無責任で 正しくなかったら

The third idea?

事態はさらに悪化し 大きな代償を 払うことになるかも しれません

We need to embrace complexity

さあ ３つ目のアイデアは？

if we want to make sense of a complex world.

複雑さを受け入れることです

Embrace complexity --

複雑な世界を理解するには これが必要です

複雑さを受け入れる―

not treat the world simplistically, because simple isn't accurate.

We live in a complex world.

世界を単純化してはいけません 単純なことと正確なことは別物です

News is adult education.

私たちは複雑な世界にいるんです

It's our job as journalists to get elbow deep in complexity

報道とは 成人教育です

and to find new ways to make it easier for everyone else to understand.

ジャーナリストとして 私たちは複雑さに身をうずめて

If we don't do that,

皆に分かりやすく伝える 新しい方法を探すべきです

if we pretend there are just simple answers,

もし そうしなければ

we're leading everyone off a steep cliff.

Understanding complexity is the only way to know the real threats

皆を絶壁へといざなう ようなものです

that are around the corner.

複雑さを理解することこそ すぐ そこにある本当の脅威を知る―

It's our responsibility to translate those threats

唯一の方法なのです

and to help you understand what's real,

私たちが責任をもって こうした脅威を かみ砕いて伝え

so you can be prepared and know what it takes to be ready

皆が 何が真実か 理解できるようにするのです

for what comes next.

やがて来ることに対し 何をすればよいか知り

I am an industrious optimist.

備えられるように

I do believe we can fix what's broken.

私は熱心な楽天家です

We all want to.

壊れたものは直せる そう信じています

There are great journalists out there doing great work --

それは私たち皆の願いです

we just need new formats.

素晴らしい仕事をする 素晴らしいジャーナリストはいるんです

I honestly believe this is a time of reawakening,

ただ新しい形式が必要なだけです

reimagining what we can do.

今こそ 私たちのできることを 再認識し 再創造するときだと

I believe we can fix what's broken.

心から信じています

I know we can fix the news.

壊れたものは直すことができます

I know it's worth trying,

報道を直せます

and I truly believe that in the end,

また そうすべきです

we're going to get this right.
