Good evening – or, good morning, I am not sure what time it is there.

「こんばんは」 それとも 「おはようございます」でしょうか

Regardless of the hour, I am thrilled to be participating in your conference.

そちらが何時なのか 分かりませんが

I very much like its title – "The Future You" –

何時にせよ 皆さんのカンファレンスに 参加できて とても嬉しいです

because, while looking at tomorrow, it invites us to open a dialogue today,

私は このイベントのテーマがとても好きです “The Future You” (未来のあなた)

to look at the future through a "you."

なぜなら このテーマは 明日を見据えながら 今日 対話を始め

"The Future You:"

あなた自身を通して 未来を洞察するよう誘っているからです

the future is made of yous, it is made of encounters,

「未来のあなた」です

because life flows through our relations with others.

未来は 一人ひとりの「あなた」でできています 未来は たくさんの出会いでできています

Quite a few years of life

人生というのは 他者との関係を通して 流れるものだからです

have strengthened my conviction

人生の長い年月をかけて

that each and everyone's existence is deeply tied to that of others:

私が強く確信したことは

life is not time merely passing by, life is about interactions.

一人ひとりの存在が 他者の存在と深く結びついているということ

As I meet, or lend an ear to those who are sick,

人生は 単に過ぎゆく時間ではなく 人生は 互いの交流だということです

to the migrants who face terrible hardships

私が人と出会い 耳を傾けるとき—

in search of a brighter future,

それは病に苦しむ人だったり

to prison inmates who carry a hell of pain inside their hearts,

明るい未来を求めて 大きな困難に直面している 移民だったり

and to those, many of them young, who cannot find a job,

心に地獄の痛みを抱える 囚人だったり

I often find myself wondering:

職を見つけられずにいる たくさんの若者だったりしますが

"Why them and not me?"

そういう時 私がよく抱く 疑問があります

I, myself, was born in a family of migrants;

「なぜ彼らであって 私ではないのか？」

my father, my grandparents, like many other Italians,

私自身 移民の家族に生まれました

left for Argentina

父も祖父も 他の多くのイタリア人と同じく

and met the fate of those who are left with nothing.

アルゼンチンを目指して祖国を離れ

I could have very well ended up among today's "discarded" people.

着の身着のまま 取り残される人々の 運命に遭いしました

And that's why I always ask myself, deep in my heart:

私は 今日の「捨てられた」人々と同じ羽目になっても おかしくありませんでした

"Why them and not me?"

だからこそ 私はいつも 心の奥で自問します

First and foremost, I would love it if this meeting could help to remind us

「なぜ彼らであって 私ではないのか？」と

that we all need each other,

まず この集まりを機に 思い起してほしいと思います

none of us is an island,

私たちは皆 互いを必要としていること

an autonomous and independent "I," separated from the other,

誰一人として

and we can only build the future by standing together, including everyone.

他者から隔絶した孤島のように 自立し独立した存在ではないこと

We don't think about it often, but everything is connected,

あらゆる人を含めた 皆が共に立つことで はじめて未来は築けること

and we need to restore our connections to a healthy state.

普段あまり考えないかもしれませんが すべては繋がっており

Even the harsh judgment I hold in my heart

私たちは 互いの健やかな関係を 取り戻す必要があります

against my brother or my sister,

兄弟姉妹に対して密かに抱く 辛辣な見解

the open wound that was never cured, the offense that was never forgiven,

癒えることのない開いた傷口

the rancor that is only going to hurt me,

許されることのない過ち

are all instances of a fight that I carry within me,

自分を苛むばかりの怨恨

a flare deep in my heart that needs to be extinguished

これは全て 私が心中に抱える 葛藤の例であり

before it goes up in flames, leaving only ashes behind.

燃え上がって全てを 焼き尽くしてしまわないよう

Many of us, nowadays,

消し止めなければならない 心の奥にくすぶる炎です

seem to believe that a happy future is something impossible to achieve.

こんにちでは 多くの人が

While such concerns must be taken very seriously,

幸せな未来はあり得ないと 思っているようです

they are not invincible.

そのような不安は 真剣に受け止められるべきですが

They can be overcome when we don't lock our door to the outside world.

克服不能ではありません

Happiness can only be discovered

外の世界への扉を閉ざさなければ 乗り越えられます

as a gift of harmony between the whole and each single component.

個々の要素が全体として 調和した結果としてのみ

Even science – and you know it better than I do –

幸福は実現します

points to an understanding of reality

科学でさえ — 皆さんの方が私よりお詳しいでしょうが

as a place where every element connects and interacts with everything else.

各々の要素が 他の全てと 繋がり合い 作用し合う場として

And this brings me to my second message.

世界を理解しようとしています

How wonderful would it be

ここで ２つ目のメッセージに移りましょう

if the growth of scientific and technological innovation

科学や技術の発展が進むことで

would come along with more equality and social inclusion.

より平等で共生的な社会を もたらせるなら

How wonderful would it be, while we discover faraway planets,

なんと素晴らしいことでしょう

to rediscover the needs of the brothers and sisters orbiting around us.

はるか彼方の惑星を発見する一方で

How wonderful would it be if solidarity,

周囲にいる同胞の必要性を再認識できるなら なんと素晴らしいことでしょう

this beautiful and, at times, inconvenient word,

美しいけれども 時として不都合ともなる

were not simply reduced to social work,

「連帯」という言葉が

and became, instead, the default attitude

福祉事業に限らず

in political, economic and scientific choices,

政治的、経済的、科学的な選択や

as well as in the relationships among individuals, peoples and countries.

個人間、民族間、国家間の 関係における

Only by educating people to a true solidarity

基本姿勢となるなら なんと素晴らしいことでしょう

will we be able to overcome

真の意味における連帯を目指す 教育によってのみ

the "culture of waste,"

人類は「無駄遣いの文化」を

which doesn't concern only food and goods

克服することができるでしょう

but, first and foremost, the people

無駄遣いというのは 食べ物や モノに関するだけではなく

who are cast aside by our techno-economic systems

何よりもまず 人についてです

which, without even realizing it,

今の技術・経済のシステムに 取り残された 人々です

are now putting products at their core, instead of people.

知らず識らずのうちに

Solidarity is a term that many wish to erase from the dictionary.

人間ではなく 人間の作ったモノが 中心に据えられてしまっています

Solidarity, however, is not an automatic mechanism.

「連帯」とは多くの人が 辞書から 消してしまいたいと願う言葉です

It cannot be programmed or controlled.

でも 連帯とは 機械的なメカニズムではありません

It is a free response born from the heart of each and everyone.

プログラムしたり 制御したりはできません

Yes, a free response!

人々の心に生まれる 自由な反応なのです

When one realizes

そうです 自由な反応です

that life, even in the middle of so many contradictions, is a gift,

多くの矛盾に満ちていても

that love is the source and the meaning of life,

人生は贈り物であり

how can they withhold their urge to do good to another fellow being?

愛が 人生の源であり意義であると 気づけば

In order to do good,

他の同胞の役に立ちたいという衝動を どうして抑えられるでしょう？

we need memory, we need courage and we need creativity.

良いことをするためには

And I know that TED gathers many creative minds.

記憶力と 勇気と 創造力が 必要になります

Yes, love does require a creative, concrete

TEDには 創造力溢れる多くの人が 集まることを私は知っています

and ingenious attitude.

そうです 愛には 創造力を働かせ

Good intentions and conventional formulas,

具体的に 物事を工夫する 姿勢が必要です

so often used to appease our conscience, are not enough.

善意と習慣は しばしば 私たちの 良心を満たすのに使われますが

Let us help each other, all together, to remember

それだけでは不十分です

that the other is not a statistic or a number.

互いに助け合って 忘れないようにしましょう

The other has a face.

相手は 統計や数値ではありません

The "you" is always a real presence,

相手には顔があるのです

a person to take care of.

「相手」というのは常に 実際の存在で

There is a parable Jesus told to help us understand the difference

世話を焼くべき人間です

between those who'd rather not be bothered and those who take care of the other.

面倒を避けて生きる人と 他人の世話を焼く人との違いを

I am sure you have heard it before. It is the Parable of the Good Samaritan.

私たちが理解できるよう イエスが語った話があります

When Jesus was asked: "Who is my neighbor?" -

みなさんご存知だと思いますが 『善きサマリア人のたとえ』です

namely, "Who should I take care of?" -

イエスが 「隣人とは誰のことですか？」 と問われた時 —

he told this story, the story of a man

つまり「誰の世話を焼くべきか？」 と聞かれたんですが

who had been assaulted, robbed, beaten and abandoned along a dirt road.

イエスは こんな話をしました

Upon seeing him, a priest and a Levite, two very influential people of the time,

ある男が襲われて 身ぐるみを剥がれ 殴られて道にうち捨てられていました

walked past him without stopping to help.

当時の有力者層だった 祭司やレビ人は

After a while, a Samaritan, a very much despised ethnicity at the time, walked by.

彼を見ても 立ち止まることなく 通り過ぎました

Seeing the injured man lying on the ground,

しばらくして 当時非常に蔑まれていた民族の サマリア人が通りかかりました

he did not ignore him as if he weren't even there.

地面に横たわる 傷ついた男を見て

Instead, he felt compassion for this man,

サマリア人は その男をいないかのように 無視したりはしませんでした

which compelled him to act in a very concrete manner.

この男をあわれに思い

He poured oil and wine on the wounds of the helpless man,

いても立ってもいられず 具体的な行動に出ました

brought him to a hostel

サマリア人は この無力な男の 傷口にオイルとワインを注ぎ

and paid out of his pocket for him to be assisted.

男を 宿屋に連れて行き

The story of the Good Samaritan is the story of today's humanity.

男の治療費を 自分で払いました

People's paths are riddled with suffering,

『善きサマリア人』の物語は 今でいう 人道的問題の話です

as everything is centered around money, and things, instead of people.

全てが 人ではなく 金やモノを中心に回り

And often there is this habit, by people who call themselves "respectable,"

人々は苦難の道を歩んでいます

of not taking care of the others,

そして 相当な地位を自認する人々に ありがちなこととして 彼らは

thus leaving behind thousands of human beings, or entire populations,

他人の世話を焼くことなく

on the side of the road.

何千人もの人や 時にはコミュニティ全体の人々を

Fortunately, there are also those who are creating a new world

道端に置き去りにします

by taking care of the other, even out of their own pockets.

幸いにも 自腹を切ってでも 他人の世話を焼いて

Mother Teresa actually said:

新しい世界を作ろうと している人たちもいます

"One cannot love, unless it is at their own expense."

実際マザー・テレサは言っています

We have so much to do, and we must do it together.

「自分を犠牲にすることなく 誰かを愛することはできません」と

But how can we do that with all the evil we breathe every day?

やるべきことは山ほどあり 私たちは協力しなければなりません

Thank God,

しかしながら 毎日 様々な悪に接しながら どうやってそうできるのでしょう？

no system can nullify our desire to open up to the good,

ありがたいことに

to compassion and to our capacity to react against evil,

善なるもの、思いやり、悪に立ち向う力に 心を開きたいと願う気持ちは

all of which stem from deep within our hearts.

どんな体制にも 消すことはできません

Now you might tell me,

私たちの心の奥底に 由来するものだからです

"Sure, these are beautiful words,

でも皆さんは思うかもしれません

but I am not the Good Samaritan, nor Mother Teresa of Calcutta."

「それは結構だけど

On the contrary: we are precious, each and every one of us.

自分は 善きサマリア人でも マザー・テレサでもない」と

Each and every one of us is irreplaceable in the eyes of God.

それは逆で 私たちは一人ひとり 全てが尊い存在なんです

Through the darkness of today's conflicts,

神の目には 私たちの一人ひとりが かけがえのない存在です

each and every one of us can become a bright candle,

私たち一人ひとりがみんな 明るいロウソクとなって

a reminder that light will overcome darkness,

こんにちの不和がもたらす暗闇を照らす 明るい光となることができます

and never the other way around.

光は 暗闇に打ち勝ちこそすれ 負けることは決してないと

To Christians, the future does have a name,

思い起こせるように

and its name is Hope.

キリスト教徒にとって 未来には名前があります

Feeling hopeful does not mean to be optimistically naïve

その名前とは「希望」です

and ignore the tragedy humanity is facing.

希望を抱くのは 楽天的な世間知らずになることでも

Hope is the virtue of a heart

人類が直面している悲劇に 見て見ぬふりをすることでもありません

that doesn't lock itself into darkness, that doesn't dwell on the past,

「希望」は心の美徳であり

does not simply get by in the present, but is able to see a tomorrow.

暗闇に閉じこもることなく 過去にしがみつくことなく

Hope is the door that opens onto the future.

今をなんとか生き抜くだけではなく 明日を見据えることができる美徳です

Hope is a humble, hidden seed of life

「希望」は 未来へと開かれた扉です

that, with time, will develop into a large tree.

「希望」は ひっそりと目立たなくとも

It is like some invisible yeast that allows the whole dough to grow,

やがて成長して大樹となる 生命の種です

that brings flavor to all aspects of life.

希望は 目に見えないイースト菌が パンの生地全体を膨らませるように

And it can do so much,

人生のあらゆる局面に 香りや彩どりを添えるものです

because a tiny flicker of light that feeds on hope

希望には大きな力があります

is enough to shatter the shield of darkness.

なぜなら 希望の糧であるところの光が ほんの少し閃くだけで

A single individual is enough for hope to exist,

暗闇の盾を打ち砕くのに 十分だからです

and that individual can be you.

希望を存続させるには 一人いれば十分であり

And then there will be another "you," and another "you,"

その一人になるのは あなたかもしれません

and it turns into an "us."

そこから 別の「あなた」や また別の「あなた」が加わって

And so, does hope begin when we have an "us?"

「私たち」になるでしょう

No.

では希望は 「私たち」になると 始まるでしょうか？

Hope began with one "you."

違います

When there is an "us," there begins a revolution.

希望は「あなた」ひとりから 始まります

The third message I would like to share today

「私たち」になったときに 始まるのは改革です

is, indeed, about revolution: the revolution of tenderness.

今日お伝えしたい ３つ目のメッセージは

And what is tenderness?

改革について — 優しさの改革です

It is the love that comes close and becomes real.

「優しさ」とは何でしょうか？

It is a movement that starts from our heart

優しさとは 近くにあって現実となる愛です

and reaches the eyes, the ears and the hands.

それは私たちの心から始まって

Tenderness means to use our eyes to see the other,

目、耳、手へと伝わる動きです

our ears to hear the other,

優しさとは 自分の目で 他者を見つめ

to listen to the children, the poor, those who are afraid of the future.

自分の耳で 他者の言葉を聞き

To listen also to the silent cry of our common home,

子供たち、貧しい者、将来に不安を抱く人たちに 耳を傾けることです

of our sick and polluted earth.

私たち共通の住処である 病に侵され 汚染された地球の

Tenderness means to use our hands and our heart

声にならない嘆きに 耳を傾けることでもあります

to comfort the other,

優しさとは 自らの手と心でもって

to take care of those in need.

他者をなぐさめることです

Tenderness is the language of the young children,

困っている者の世話を焼くことです

of those who need the other.

優しさは 幼い子供たちの言語であり

A child's love for mom and dad

他者を必要とする者の言語です

grows through their touch, their gaze, their voice, their tenderness.

両親に対する子供の愛は

I like when I hear parents

両親の手 眼差し 声 優しさを通して 成長します

talk to their babies, adapting to the little child,

親が 自分の赤子に話しかけ

sharing the same level of communication.

幼子に合わせて

This is tenderness: being on the same level as the other.

同じレベルで意思疎通するのを 聞くのが 私は好きです

God himself descended into Jesus to be on our level.

これこそが優しさです 他者と同じ立場に立つこと

This is the same path the Good Samaritan took.

私たちと同じレベルに身を置くため 神は自ら イエスとなって現れました

This is the path that Jesus himself took.

これは 「善きサマリア人」が 取ったのと同じ道—

He lowered himself,

イエス自身が取ったのと 同じ道なのです

he lived his entire human existence

自らを人の身にやつし

practicing the real, concrete language of love.

人間としての人生を生き

Yes, tenderness is the path of choice

真実で揺るぎない愛の教えを 実践しました

for the strongest, most courageous men and women.

そうです 優しさは

Tenderness is not weakness; it is fortitude.

最も強く 最も勇敢な男女が 選ぶ道です

It is the path of solidarity, the path of humility.

優しさは弱さではなく 不屈の精神です

Please, allow me to say it loud and clear:

それは連帯の道であり 謙虚の道です

the more powerful you are,

声を大にしてはっきりと言わせてください

the more your actions will have an impact on people,

権力を持てば持つほど

the more responsible you are to act humbly.

自分の行動が人に及ぼす影響が 大きくなり

If you don't, your power will ruin you, and you will ruin the other.

謙虚に振る舞うべき義務が 大きくなります

There is a saying in Argentina:

謙虚に振る舞わねば 権力はあなたを害し あなたは他者を害することになるでしょう

"Power is like drinking gin on an empty stomach."

アルゼンチンにことわざがあります

You feel dizzy, you get drunk, you lose your balance,

「権力は 空き腹に飲むジンの如し」

and you will end up hurting yourself and those around you,

謙虚さと優しさをもって 権力を行使しないなら

if you don't connect your power with humility and tenderness.

目が眩み 酔いしれて バランスを失い

Through humility and concrete love, on the other hand,

自分自身や周囲の人を 傷つける結果になります

power – the highest, the strongest one – becomes a service, a force for good.

一方 謙虚さと揺るぎない愛をもって 行使するなら

The future of humankind isn't exclusively in the hands of politicians,

最高最強の権力にも 良い奉仕ができ 善への力となります

of great leaders, of big companies.

人類の未来は 政治家や 優れた指導者や 大企業の手にのみ

Yes, they do hold an enormous responsibility.

委ねられているのではありません

But the future is, most of all, in the hands of those people

確かに彼らは 大きな責任を負っています

who recognize the other as a "you"

でも 未来は何よりも 他者を相手として認識し

and themselves as part of an "us."

自分を全体の一員として認識する

We all need each other.

そういう人たちの手に かかっているのです

And so, please, think of me as well with tenderness,

私たちは皆 互いを必要としています

so that I can fulfill the task I have been given

だから どうか私のことも 優しさをもって考えてください

for the good of the other,

そうすれば 私は 他者のため

of each and every one, of all of you,

ありとあらゆる人のため 皆さんのために

of all of us.

与えられた責務を

全うできるでしょう
