Let me take a guess at some of thoughts

トランスジェンダーです

that might be running through your head right now.

たった今 皆さんの頭の中に

"Transgender?

浮かんだ考えを 当ててみましょう

Wait, does that mean that they're actually a man or actually a woman?"

「トランスジェンダー？

"I wonder if he's had the surgery yet ...

待って この人 本当は男性なの？ それとも女性？」

Oh, now I'm looking at his crotch.

「この人 手術は もう済ませたのかなあ…

Look to the right, that's a safe place to look."

おっと 思わず股間に目が行く

"Yes, I knew it! No real man has hips like those."

そこはまずい 視線を右にずらそう」

"My friend's daughter is transgender --

「ああ やっぱり！ お尻が男っぽくないからね」

I wonder if they know each other."

「友達の娘が トランスジェンダーだけど

"Oh my gosh, he is so brave.

その子と知り合いなのかな」

I would totally support his right to use the men's bathroom.

「すごいや　勇気があるなあ

Wait, but how does he use the bathroom?

彼が男性用トイレを使う権利を 支持するね

How does he have sex?"

でもどうやって 用を足すんだろう？

OK, OK, let's stop those hypothetical questions

セックスはどうするの？」

before we get too close for my comfort.

はいはい きわどい内容に 私が気分を害する前に そのへんで

I mean, don't get me wrong,

妄想の質問は やめておきましょうか

I did come here today to share my personal experiences being transgender,

誤解しないで下さい

but I did not wake up this morning wanting to tell an entire audience

トランスジェンダーとしての 個人的な経験をお話しするつもりですが

about my sex life.

今朝起きて さあ観客の皆さんに 自分の性生活について話したいと

Of course, that's the problem with being trans, right?

思ったわけではありません

People are pretty much always wondering how we have sex

当然それもトランスジェンダーの 問題ですよね？

and what kind of equipment we're working with below the belt.

私達が下半身の どんな部分を使って

Being trans is awkward.

どうやってセックスするのか 気にする人は大勢います

And not just because the gender I was assigned at birth

トランスジェンダーである事は 厄介です

mismatches the one I really am.

出生時に割り当てられた性が 実際の自分の性と

Being trans is awkward

一致しないからだけではありません

because everyone else gets awkward when they're around me.

厄介なのは

People who support me and all other trans people wholeheartedly

自分の周囲にいると 他の皆が気まずい思いをするからです

are often so scared to say to wrong thing,

私や他のトランスジェンダーの人々を 心を込めて支援する人達は

so embarrassed to not know what they think they should,

間違った事を言うのを 極度に恐れ

that they never ask.

自分がどうすべきか知らない事を 恥じるあまり

Part of what was so nerve-racking about coming out as transgender

質問もしないのです

was knowing that people wouldn't know what I meant.

トランスジェンダーであることの カミングアウトに神経をすり減らすのは

And when someone comes out as gay,

それがどういうことか 分かってもらえないと知っているからです

people know what that means,

ゲイであるとカミングアウトしたら

but when you come out as trans,

分かってもらえますが

you have to face the misconceptions

トランスジェンダーとなると

that will color other people's impressions of you

自分で説明をした後でも

even after you've educated them ...

誤解のせいで 周りの人に色眼鏡で

And you will have to educate them.

見られてしまうものです…

When I came out,

だから 啓発を 続けていかなければならないのです

I wrote at 10-page encyclopedic document

私がカミングアウトをした時

with a zip-file attachment of music and videos

10ページに渡る 百科事典のような文書に

that I sent to every single person I came out to.

ビデオと音楽の パソコンデータを添付して

(Laughter)

カミングアウトをした相手 全員に送りました

And I kept it in my email signature for months afterwards,

（笑）

because you also don't ever stop coming out.

その後 数か月間 メールの署名に含めておきました

I came out to the accountant helping me with my taxes

カミングアウトは やめるものではないからです

and the TSA agents who didn't know which one of them should pat me down,

納税手続きを手伝ってくれる 税理士にもカミングアウトしたし

the man or the woman.

男女どちらが身体検査をすべきか 迷っていたセキュリティの職員にも

I mean, I just came out to everyone watching this.

カミングアウトしました

When I came out to my dad,

それに これをご覧の皆さんに カミングアウトしてもいます

to my great relief, he was totally cool with me being trans,

父にカミングアウトした時

but as soon as I started talking about physically transitioning,

父は全くそれ関して冷静で 実にホッとしました

he freaked.

しかし性転換の話を始めると 急に

And I quickly realized it was because he, like so many other people,

落ち着きを失いました

think that physical transition means just one thing:

他の多くの人達同様 父も性転換が意味するものは

the surgery.

ただ１つだと思っている事に 即座に気づきました

Now, listen,

そう 手術です

if there were one magical surgery

さて 聞いて下さい

that could turn me into a tall, muscular,

もし私の背が高くなり

societally perfect image of a man overnight,

筋肉ムキムキの 皆が認める完璧な男性像に

I'd sign up in a heartbeat.

一夜にしてなれる 魔法の手術があるならば

Unfortunately, it isn't that simple.

私はすぐに同意書を書くでしょう

There are dozens of different gender-affirming surgeries

残念ながら それ程 単純ではありません

from chest surgeries to bottom surgeries

多数の異なる性転換手術があり

to facial feminization and man-sculpting.

胸の手術やお尻の手術

Many trans people will only ever undergo one procedure in their lifetime, if that.

顔の女性化手術や 男性化手術まで様々です

Maybe because they don't personally feel the need

やるとしても 多くのトランスジェンダーが 処置を経験するのは一度だけです

but also because they're expensive,

その必要を自分で感じないためも ありますが

and health insurance is only beginning to cover them.

Instead, the first step for a trans person seeking physical transition

is usually hormone replacement therapy.

性転換を希望するトランスジェンダーの人が まず行うのは手術ではなく

Hormones are why I have a deeper voice and some sparse whiskers on my neck

大抵 ホルモン補充療法です

and a giant pimple on my chin.

ホルモンのおかげで 私の声は低くなり 首の辺りに髭が生え

Basically, they put you through a second puberty ...

顎にでかいニキビがあるんです

it's a blast.

基本的に 思春期を やり直すようなものです...

凄いですよね

Now, because our transitions are slower and steadier

（笑）

than historic misconceptions can lead people to believe,

実際の性転換は かねてから 皆さんが思っているよりも

there can be some confusion

変化も緩やかで 気づきにくいものであるため

about when to call someone by their new name and pronouns.

いつ新たな名前で呼び

There's no distinct point in physical transition

heかsheのどちらを使えばいいのか 少し混乱するかもしれません

at which a trans person becomes their true gender.

性転換には トランスジェンダーの人が

As soon as they tell you their new name and pronouns,

本来の性になるという 明確な瞬間がありません

that's when you start using them.

彼らが自分の新しい名前や 別の代名詞を使い始めたら

It can be difficult to make the change.

皆さんも使い始める時なのです

You might slip up here and there;

変えていくのは 難しいかもしれませんし

I've slipped up myself with other trans people.

度々うっかり間違うかもしれません

But I always think to myself,

私も他の人に対して 間違った事があります

if we can change from calling Puff Daddy to P. Diddy,

でもいつも心の中で思うのです

and if we apologize profusely when we've used the wrong gender pronoun

パフ・ダディーから P・ディディという呼び方に変えられ

for someone's pet cat --

誰かのペットのメス猫に heと言ってしまった時に

I mean, I think we can make the same effort

丁重に謝れるのであれば

for the real humans in our lives.

日々接する人間に対しても

Now, there is no topic that makes other people more awkward about trans people

同じ努力ができると思うのです

than public bathrooms.

さて トランスジェンダーの問題を この上なく厄介にする話題は

Ah, the bathrooms --

公衆トイレの話題です

the latest political flash point for LGBT opponents.

ええ トイレとは

Here's a fun fact about bathrooms:

LGBTの敵にとって 最新の政治的発火点です

more US congressmen have been convicted of assaulting someone in a public bathroom

トイレに関して面白い話があります

than trans people have been.

公衆トイレで暴行を加えたかどで 有罪になった人はトランスジェンダーの人より

(Laughter)

男性国会議員の方が多いのです

The truth is we trans people are so much more scared of you than you are of us.

（笑）

It's a huge point of discussion in trans communities

実は私達は 皆さんが私達を恐れるより もっと皆さんを恐れています

about which bathroom to start using and when,

いつどちらのトイレを使い始めるかは

so we don't attract attention that could lead to violence against us.

私達のコミュニティでは 大きな論点です

I personally started using the men's room

暴行に繋がりうるような注目を 引かないようにするためです

when I started getting confused and frightened looks in the women's room,

私自身が男性用トイレを 使い始めたのは

even though I was petrified to start going into the men's room.

女性用トイレで不審に思われ 怖がるような視線を受け始めた頃でした

And often we opt to just not go to the bathroom at all.

男性用を使い始めた頃は 足がすくみましたが―

A 2015 national survey of trans people

それでトイレに行かないという 選択をする事もよくあります

found that eight percent of us had had a urinary tract infection

2015年に行われた トランスジェンダーの全国調査によると

in the past year

as a result of avoiding restrooms.

These bathroom bills aren't protecting anyone.

All they're doing

is ensuring that when trans people are assaulted in bathrooms,

the law will no longer be on our side when we report it.

Being trans means a daily onslaught of these misconceptions.

トランスジェンダーである事は日々 誤解による猛攻撃に晒される事を意味します

And I have it pretty easy.

私はまだましな方です

I am a white, able-bodied guy

白人で健常者の男性なので

sitting nearly at the peak of privilege mountain.

かなり特権を享受している方です

For non-binary people,

ノンバイナリーの人達や

for trans women,

トランスジェンダーの女性

for trans people of color,

有色人種の トランスジェンダーにとっては

it is so much harder.

ずっと困難なのです

So I've given you a starter pack of trans knowledge

そこで 皆さんの理解が 深まるようにと

that I hope will lead to more learning on your own.

トランスジェンダーの知識 基本セットを提供しました

Talk to trans people.

トランスジェンダーの人達と話をし

Listen to us.

私達の話に耳を傾けて下さい

Amplify our voices.

私達の声を広めて下さい

Take the heat off of us and educate those around you

私達が毎回説明せずに済むよう 負担を軽減し

so we don't have to every time.

周囲の人を啓発してください

Maybe someday, when I say,

多分いつか こんな日が来るでしょう

"Hi, I'm Jack, and I'm transgender,"

「やあ 私はジャック トランスジェンダーです」

the only response I'll get is,

すると こんな返事が来るのです

"Hi, nice to meet you."

「やあ こんにちは」
