セレブ達がアフリカから養子をもらうことに

嫌気がさしてる人いませんか？

Well, it's not all that bad.

（笑）

I was adopted.

でも悪い事ばかりではないんです

I grew up in rural Uganda,

私も養子でした

lost both my parents when I was very, very young.

ウガンダの田舎で育ち

And when my parents passed,

幼い頃に両親を亡くしました

I experienced all the negative effects of poverty,

その当時は

from homelessness,

あらゆる貧困の辛さを経験しました

eating out of trash piles,

家を失い

you name it.

ゴミの山から食べ物を探し

But my life changed

あらゆることをです

when I got accepted into an orphanage.

しかし 私の人生は

Through one of those sponsor-an-orphan programs,

児童養護施設に入所して 変わりました

I was sponsored and given an opportunity to acquire an education.

ある孤児支援の寄付制度を通して

I started off in Uganda.

援助を受け 教育を受ける機会を得ました

I went through school, and the way this particular program worked,

最初はウガンダでした

you finished high school and after high school,

この制度で学校に通う子供は

you go learn a trade -- to become a carpenter, a mechanic

高校を卒業して その後

or something along those lines.

大工や整備工や その類の仕事ができるように

My case was a little different.

手に職をつけることになります

The sponsor family that was sending these 25 dollars a month

私の場合は少し違っていました

to this orphanage to sponsor me,

支援家族が私のために 月25ドルを

which -- I had never met them --

養護施設へ送金してくれていたのですが

said, "Well ...

一度も会ったことない私に

we would like to send you to college instead."

彼らは言ったのです

Oh -- it gets better.

「君を大学に行かせたい」と

(Laughter)

もっと良いじゃないか

And they said, "If you get the paperwork,

（笑）

we'll send you to school in America instead."

「もし書類を準備できるなら

So with their help,

アメリカの学校に行かないか」 と言われました

I went to the embassy and applied for the visa.

彼らの助けを借りながら

I got the visa.

大使館へ行ってビザを申請しました

I remember this day like it was yesterday.

ビザを手に入れました

I walked out of the embassy with this piece of paper in my hand,

今でも昨日の出来事のように 思い出します

a hop in my step,

１枚の紙切れを手に持ち大使館を出た時は

smile on my face,

飛び跳ねるような足取りで

knowing that my life is about to change.

顔がにやけました

I went home that night,

人生が変わろうとしていると 分かっていました

and I slept with my passport,

その晩 家に帰って

because I was afraid that someone might steal it.

誰かに盗まれないか心配で

(Laughter)

パスポートを抱えながら眠りました

I couldn't fall asleep.

（笑）

I kept feeling it.

実際はずっと心配なままで

I had a good idea for security.

眠れませんでした

I was like, "OK, I'm going to put it in a plastic bag,

そこで安全のために あることを考えました

and take it outside and dig a hole, and put it in there."

「そうだ パスポートを ビニール袋に入れて

I did that, went back in the house.

外に穴を掘り埋めておこう」

I could not fall asleep. I was like, "Maybe someone saw me."

そして埋めて 家に戻りました

I went back --

眠れませんでした 「誰かに見られたかも」と心配でした

(Laughter)

埋めた場所へ戻ったのです

I pulled it out, and I put it with me the entire night --

（笑）

all to say that it was an anxiety-filled night.

掘り出して一晩中抱えていました

(Laughter)

不安でいっぱいの夜でした

Going to the US was, just like another speaker said,

（笑）

was my first time to see a plane,

別のスピーカーも言っていましたが 私も渡米する時に

be on one, let alone sit on it to fly to another country.

初めて飛行機を見ました

December 15, 2006.

ましてや飛行機に乗るのも それで外国へ行くことも初めてでした

7:08pm.

2006年12月15日

I sat in seat 7A.

午後７時８分

Fly Emirates.

エミレーツ航空の

One of the most gorgeous, beautiful women I've ever seen walked up,

７Aが私の座席でした

red little hat with a white veil.

これまで見た中で最も華麗で美しい女性が 私に近づいてきたのです

I'm looking terrified, I have no idea what I'm doing.

白いヴェール付きの赤い小さな帽子を かぶっています

She hands me this warm towel --

私は明らかに怯えた顔をしており 何をしているのか分からなくなりました

warm, steamy, snow white.

彼女から温かいタオルを渡されました

I'm looking at this warm towel;

温かく蒸してあって 雪のように真っ白でした

I don't know what to do with my life, let alone with this damn towel --

この温かいタオルを見つめて考えました

(Laughter)

自分の人生さえ途方に暮れているのに ましてやタオルなんてー

(Applause)

I did one of the --

（拍手）

you know, anything anyone could do in that situation:

こういう状況では

look around, see what everyone else is doing.

色々やりようがあるわけです

I did the same.

周りの人がどう使っているか見渡し

Mind you, I drove about seven hours from my village to the airport that day.

真似をしました

So I grab this warm towel,

自分の村から車で７時間ほどかけて 空港に来ていた私は

wipe my face just like everyone else is doing,

この温かいタオルを手に握ると

I look at it --

他の人のように顔を拭きました

damn.

そしてタオルを見るとー

(Laughter)

嘘だろ

It was all dirt brown.

（笑）

(Laughter)

汚れで茶色くなっていました

I remember being so embarrassed that when she came by to pick it up,

（笑）

I didn't give mine.

恥ずかしくてタオルを回収に来た時 返せなかったことを

(Laughter)

思い出します

I still have it.

（笑）

(Laughter)

今でも持ってます

(Applause)

（笑）

Going to America opened doors for me

（拍手）

to live up to my full God-given potential.

私にとって渡米は

I remember when I arrived,

自分に与えられた可能性を 最大限に発揮するチャンスでした

the sponsor family embraced me,

アメリカに着き

and they literally had to teach me everything from scratch:

支援家族に 抱きしめられたことを覚えています

this is a microwave, that's a refrigerator --

彼らは私に まさに全てのことを 一から教えなければなりませんでしたた

things I'd never seen before.

これが電子レンジ あれは冷蔵庫―

And it was also the first time

それまで見たこともなかったんです

I got immersed into a new and different culture.

そして初めて異国の文化に

These strangers showed me

どっぷり浸る機会でもありました

true love.

他人であった彼らは教えてくれました

These strangers showed me that I mattered,

本当の愛を

that my dreams mattered.

彼らはまた 自分の存在価値や

(Applause)

私が抱いている夢の価値も 教えてくれました

These individuals had two of their own biological children.

ありがとう

And when I came in, I had needs.

支援家族には実子が２人いました

They had to teach me English,

そして 米国に来た当時 私には助けが必要でした

teach me literally everything,

支援家族は英語だけでなく

which resulted in them spending a lot of time with me.

本当に全てのことを教えねばならず

And that created a little bit of jealousy with their children.

結果として 多くの時間を私と共に過ごしました

So, if you're a parent in this room,

それで実子にちょっと ヤキモチを焼かれたりもしました

and you have those teenager children

ですから この会場にいる親御さんで

who don't want anything to do with your love and affection --

10代のお子さんがいらして

in fact, they find it repulsive --

あなた達が 愛情を持って接する事を望まず

I got a solution:

それどころか 嫌悪しているようならー

adopt a child.

解決策は

(Laughter)

養子を迎えることです

It will solve the problem.

（笑）

これで家族円満です

I went on to acquire two engineering degrees

（拍手）

from one of the best institutions in the world.

世界有数の機関から

I've got to tell you:

私は工学の学位を２つ取りました

talent is universal,

伝えたいことは

but opportunities are not.

才能は誰もが持っていても

And I credit this

発揮する機会があるとは限らないのです

to the individuals who embrace multiculturalism,

私がこうなれたのは

love, empathy

多文化主義を受け入れ

and compassion for others.

愛情と共感 そして思いやりを

We live in a world filled with hate:

持っている人達のお陰です

building walls,

今 世界は憎しみで溢れています

Brexit,

壁を作ったり

xenophobia here on the African continent.

イギリスのEU離脱問題

Multiculturalism can be an answer

ここアフリカでの外国人嫌悪

to many of these worst human qualities.

多文化主義は こういった

Today, I challenge you

人間の最悪の特性による問題の 多くを解決してくれるかもしれません

to help a young child experience multiculturalism.

皆さんにお願いです

I guarantee you that will enrich their life,

若い世代が多文化主義を経験できるよう 支援してください

and in turn,

そうすることは 彼らの人生を豊かにするだけでなく

it will enrich yours.

And as a bonus,

あなたの人生も豊かにしてくれます

one of them may even give a TED Talk.

We may not be able to solve the bigotry and the racism of this world today,

but certainly we can raise children

世界の偏見や人種差別は 無くせないかもしれません

to create a positive, inclusive, connected world

full of empathy,

繋がりある世界を創る子供を 育てることは確実にできます

and compassion.
