We visited not only with prosecutors

私の主催する「Free America」で 実態調査をしました

but with legislators,

検察官と会談しただけではなく

with inmates in our state and local prisons.

立法府の議員や

We've gone to immigration detention centers.

州や自治体の刑務所で 服役中の受刑者とも会い

We've met a lot of people.

入国者収容所にも出向き

And we've seen that redemption and transformation can happen

沢山の人の意見を聞きました

in our prisons, our jails and our immigration detention centers,

その結果わかった事は 刑務所 拘置所 入国収容所内での

giving hope to those who want to create a better life

罪のあがないと更生は可能であり

after serving their time.

服役終了後の　 人生のやり直しに向けた

Imagine if we also considered the front end of this prison pipeline.

希望を与えられる ということです

What would it look like if we intervened,

収容制度の流れを 最初から考え直してみてください

with rehabilitation as a core value --

冒頭から更生を一番の目的にした

with love and compassion as core values?

対策をとり 愛情といたわりを―

We would have a society that is safer,

基本的な価値基準とすれば どうなるでしょう

healthier

and worthy of raising our children in.

I want to introduce you to James Cavitt.

安心して子供を育てられる 社会になると確信しています

James served 12 years in the San Quentin State Prison

ここでジェームス・カヴィットを紹介します

and is being released in 18 months.

ジェームスはサン・クエンティン 州立刑務所で12年間服役し

Now James, like you and me,

18ヶ月後に出所します

is more than the worst thing he's done.

そんなジェームスも我々と同様の人間―

He is a father, a husband, a son, a poet.

最悪の過ちも犯しましたが 罪そのものよりもましな人間です

He committed a crime;

彼は父親、夫、息子で 詩人でもあります

he's paying his debt,

彼は罪を犯し

and working hard to build the skills

その償いをしています

to make the transition back to a productive life

when he enters the civilian population again.

Now James, like millions of people behind bars,

is an example of what happens

if we believe that our failings don't define who we are,

that we are all worthy of redemption

and if we support those impacted by mass incarceration,

I live in a world where most people are too afraid to go.

Surrounded by tall, concrete walls,

俺の住むところには 誰も怖がって近寄らない

steel bars,

高いコンクリートの壁と

where razor wire have a way

鉄格子で囲まれ

of cutting away at the hopes for a brighter tomorrow.

かみそりのような有刺鉄線が

I live in a world

明日にむけた希望も 切り裂くようなところ

that kill people who kill people

俺が住んでるところでは

in order to teach people

人殺しの魂を殺す事で

that killing people is wrong.

殺人はいけないと

Imagine that.

教えようとしている

Better yet,

考えてみろよ

imagine a world where healed people helped hurt people heal

そんなことより

and become strong.

傷が癒やされた人が 傷ついた人を癒して―

Maybe then we would all be singin' "Redemption Song."

強くなっていく世界を 想像してくれ

I live in a world that has been called "hell on Earth"

そうなれば『リデンプション・ソング』を 皆で歌えるだろ

by those trapped inside.

俺が住むのは 投獄された者が「地上の地獄」と

But I've come to the stark realization

呼ぶところ

that prison --

でも そこで何を悟ったかと言うと

it really is what you make it.

牢屋といっても

You see, in spite of the harshness of my reality,

気持ちの持ちかたで変わる事

there is a silver lining.

過酷な現実の中にも 実は

I knew that my freedom was gonna come,

希望の光はある

it was just a matter of time.

いつか自由もやってくる

And so I treated my first steps as if they were my last mile,

それは単に時間の問題だ

and I realized that you don't have to be free

だから最初の一歩から 最後の１マイルのように大事に歩んだ

in order to experience freedom.

自由の身にならなくても

And just because you're free,

自由を経験できることも学んだ

doesn't mean that you have freedom.

たとえ監禁されてなくても

Many of us, for years, have been battling our inner demons.

自由だとは限らない

We walk around smiling when inside we're really screamin':

誰もが自分の中に潜む 悪魔と戦っている

freedom!

Don't you get it?

解放してくれ！

We're all serving time;

I choose to be free from the prisons I've created.

The key:

自分で作った牢獄から脱出した

forgiveness.

Action's my witness.

If we want freedom,

then we gotta think different.

自由を望むなら

Because freedom ...

考え方を変えてみよう
