island of garbage.

IW: In Bali,

ゴミの島

we generate 680 cubic meters of plastic garbage a day.

イサベル： バリでは

That's about a 14-story building.

１日に 680立方メートルの プラスチックごみが 排出されています

And when it comes to plastic bags,

14階建てのビルに 相当する量です

less than five percent gets recycled.

そして レジ袋となると

MW: We know that changes the image you may have of our island.

その５%以下しか 再生されません

It changed ours, too, when we learned about it,

メラティ： そう聞くと バリ島のイメージが変わるでしょう

when we learned that almost all plastic bags in Bali end up in our drains

私たちも 知った時 同じように感じました

and then in our rivers

バリではほとんど全てのレジ袋が 排水溝に流され

and then in our ocean.

川を通って 最終的には

And those that don't even make it to the ocean,

海へと流れ込むことを

they're either burned or littered.

そして 海にも到達しないレジ袋は

IW: So we decided to do something about it.

燃やされるか 捨て散らかされるかなのです

And we've been working for almost three years now

イサベル： これを どうにかしようと決意しました

to try to say no to plastic bags on our home island.

故郷バリ島から レジ袋を廃止しようという

And we have had some significant successes.

運動を始めてから 今 およそ３年が経ちますが

MW: We are sisters,

かなりの成功を収めてきました

and we go to the best school on earth:

メラティ： 私たちは姉妹です

Green School, Bali.

地上で最高の学校に通っています

Green School is not only different in the way that it is built out of bamboo,

バリのグリーンスクールです

but also in the way that it teaches.

この学校は 竹でできていますが 建築方法の違いだけでなく

We are taught to become leaders of today,

そこでの「学び」 も違うのです

something a normal textbook cannot match.

今日のリーダーとなるべく 教育を受けます

IW: One day we had a lesson in class

通常の教科書通りの 教育ではありません

where we learned about significant people,

イサベル： ある日の授業では

like Nelson Mandela,

「すごい人々」 について学びました

Lady Diana

ネルソン・マンデラや

and Mahatma Gandhi.

ダイアナ元妃

Walking home that day,

マハトマ・ガンジーなどです

we agreed that we also wanted to be significant.

その日帰宅の路で

Why should we wait until we were grown up

自分たちも そんな風に なりたいと思いました

to be significant?

「すごい人」 になるのを 大人になるまで

We wanted to do something now.

待つことはありませんよね？

MW: Sitting on the sofa that night,

今 何かをしたいと思ったのです

we brainstormed and thought of all the issues facing Bali.

メラティ： その夜２人で

And one thing that stood out to us the most

バリが直面する問題を全て 洗い出してみました

was the plastic garbage.

最も際立った問題は

But that is a huge problem.

プラスチックごみでした

So we looked into what was a realistic target for us kids:

しかし すごく大きな問題です

plastic bags.

だから 私たち子どもが 現実的に 目標にできるものを考えました

And the idea was born.

ビニール袋です

IW: We started researching,

アイデアが生まれたわけです

and let's just say, the more we learned,

イサベル： 調査を始めましたが

there was nothing good about plastic bags.

まあ 調べれば調べるほど

And you know what?

レジ袋の利点は 何もなかったのです

We don't even need them.

MW: We were really inspired by the efforts to say no to plastic bags

レジ袋など 必要ないのです

in many other places,

外国でのレジ袋廃止活動に すごく刺激を受けました

from Hawaii to Rwanda

あちこちで行われている活動です

and to severals cities like Oakland and Dublin.

IW: And so the idea turned into the launch of "Bye Bye Plastic Bags."

オークランドにダブリンなど 都市でも行われています

MW: In the years that we have been campaigning,

イサベル： これをヒントに 「バイバイレジ袋」 運動が始動しました

we have learned a lot.

メラティ： 運動を続けてきた数年で

Lesson number one:

多くのことを学びました

you cannot do it all by yourself.

教訓その１

You need a big team of like-minded kids,

「一人だけでは 成し遂げられない」

and so we formed the Bye Bye Plastic Bags crew.

同じ考えの仲間が たくさん必要です

The volunteer team includes children from all over the island,

そうして「バイバイレジ袋」 チームが 結成されました

from both international and local schools.

ボランティチームは島中の 子どもたちが参加しています

And together with them,

インターナショナルスクールや 地元の学校の子

we started a multi-layered approach,

皆 共に活動しています

based on an on- and off-line signature petition,

色々なレベルでのアプローチも始めました

educational and inspirational presentations at schools

オンライン・オフラインでの 請願書署名活動や

and we raise general awareness at markets, festivals, beach clean-ups.

学校での 教育的かつ感動的な プレゼンを基にして

And last but not least,

市場、お祭り、海岸の清掃などを利用し 一般的な意識を高めるのです

we distribute alternative bags,

また これも大事なのですが

bags like net bags,

エコバッグの配布もしました

recycled newspaper bags

網バッグや 新聞紙で作った

or 100 percent organic material bags,

リサイクルバッグとか

all made by local initiatives on the island.

100%オーガニック素材のバッグなど

IW: We run a pilot village,

全てこの島の 地元の主導で 作られたものです

home of 800 families.

イサベル： 800世帯が住む村で

The village mayor was our first friend

実験的に試行しました

and he loved our T-shirts, so that helped.

村長は 村での最初の友人で

We focused on making the customers aware,

Tシャツを気に入ってくれたのが きっかけでした

because that's where the change needs to happen.

お客さんの意識を変えることに 集中しました

The village is already two-thirds along the way

まずは意識の変化が必要だからです

of becoming plastic bag free.

村では既に ３分の２の店が

Our first attempts to get the government of Bali on board failed.

レジ袋を撤廃しようとしていました

So we thought,

バリの役所を 巻き込もうとしましたが 一度目は失敗に終わりました

"Hmm ... a petition with one million signatures.

そこで 考えました

They can't ignore us, right?"

「うーん・・・ 100万人が署名した請願書があれば

MW: Right!

聞いてくれるんじゃない？」

IW: But, who would have guessed

メラティ： その通り！

one million signatures is, like, a thousand times a thousand?

イサベル： でも100万の署名って

(Laughter)

千人が千回書くみたいな？

We got stuck --

（笑）

till we learned lesson number two:

八方塞がりでしたが・・・

think outside the box.

教訓その２「既成概念を捨てろ」 を

Someone mentioned

学んで変わりました

that the Bali airport handles 16 million arrivals and departures a year.

誰かが言っていたんです

MW: But how do we get into the airport?

バリ空港では 年間1600万人が乗り降りするって

And here comes lesson number three:

メラティ： でも どうやって 空港に乗り込むのか？

persistence.

さて ここで教訓その３

Off we headed to the airport.

「粘り強さ」 です

We got past the janitor.

空港へ向かい

And then it was his boss's boss,

守衛を通過し

and then the assistant office manager,

その上司の上司

and then the office manager,

それから 副事務所長

and then ...

そして 事務所長

we got shuffled down two levels and thought,

次に・・・

well, here comes the janitor again.

また２つ 下位に戻され

And after several days knocking on doors

再び守衛と話をするといった具合でした

and just being kids on a mission,

使命を負った子どもたちとして

we finally got to the commercial manager of Bali airports.

何日も粘った後

And we gave him the "Bali of plastic bags" speech, and being a very nice man,

ついに バリ空港の 商業部門の責任者に辿り着きました

he said, [imitating the man's voice] "I cannot believe what I'm about say,

バリのレジ袋について スピーチしたら 彼はとてもいい人で

but I'm going to give authorization

[男の声を真似て] 「こんなことは 前例がないのですが

to collect signatures behind customs and immigrations."

税関や入国審査場の外での

(Laughter)

署名運動を許可します」 と言いました

(Applause)

IW: In our first hour and a half there,

（拍手）

we got almost 1,000 signatures.

イサベル： 最初の１時間半で

How cool is that?

およそ千人分の署名が集まりました

Lesson number four:

すごいでしょ？

you need champions at all levels of society,

from students to commercial managers to famous people.

「学生から責任者、有名人に至るまで

And thanks to the attraction of Green School,

社会のあらゆるレベルで 『味方』 が必要である」

we had access to a steady stream of celebrities.

Ban Ki Moon taught us

that Secretary-Generals of the United Nations

(Laughter)

even if kids ask nicely.

But he promised to spread the word,

and now we work closely with the United Nations.

MW: Jane Goodall taught us the power of a people's network.

今私たちは 国連と緊密に 動いています

She started with just one Roots & Shoots group

メラティ： ジェーン・グドール氏は 人の繋がりの力を教えてくれました

and now she has 4,000 groups around the world.

たった１つの Roots&Shootsグループを

We are one of them.

今や世界中で４千もの グループにまで広げた人です

She's a real inspiration.

IW: But we have also learned much about patience,

MW: we learned more about the Balinese and their culture

IW: and we learned about the importance of commitment.

メラティ： バリの人々や文化についての 知識も深まり

MW: It's not always easy.

イサベル： 責任の重要性も学びました

Sometimes it does get a little bit hard to walk your talk.

メラティ： 言動を一致させるのは

IW: But last year, we did exactly that.

常に簡単ではなく ちょっと難しいこともあります

We went to India to give a talk,

イサベル： でも昨年は実行しました

and our parents took us to visit

インドへ講演をしに行って

the former private house of Mahatma Gandhi.

私たち２人は 両親に

We learned about the power of hunger strikes

ガンジーの旧邸に 連れて行ってもらいました

he did to reach his goals.

彼が目標達成のために行ったー

Yes, by the end of the tour,

ハンストの力について学びました

when we met our parents again,

そう そのツアーの最後に

we both made a decision and said,

両親と合流した時

"We're going on a hunger strike!"

２人とも 心を決めて言いました

(Laughter)

「私たち ハンストするわ！」

MW: And you can probably imagine their faces.

（笑）

It took a lot of convincing,

メラティ： その時の両親の顔が 想像できるでしょう

and not only to our parents

説得には時間がかかりました

but to our friends and to our teachers as well.

両親だけでなく

Isabel and I were serious about doing this.

友人や先生への説得もです

So we met with a nutritionist,

私たちは 本気で ハンストしようとしていました

and we came up with a compromise

栄養士とも会いました

of not eating from sunrise to sunset every day

そして妥協点に辿り着きました

until the governor of Bali would agree to meet with us

毎日夜明けから日没まで 断食する ということです

to talk about how to stop plastic bags on Bali.

バリ州知事が 島のレジ袋廃止方法について

IW: Our "mogak makan," as it is called in Bahasa Indonesia,

会って話し合うと 同意してくれるまで

started.

イサベル： インドネシア語で言う 私たちの"mogak makan"（ハンスト）が

We used social media to support our goal

始まったのです

and already on day two,

目標達成のため SNSを使いました

police started to come to our home and school.

２日目にして既に

What were these two girls doing?

警察が 家や学校に来るようになりました

We knew we weren't making the governor look his best

２人は一体何をしているのかとね

by doing this food strike --

私たちのハンストのせいで 知事の格好がつかないー

we could have gone to jail.

それはわかっていました

But, hey, it worked.

投獄されたかもしれません

Twenty-four hours later,

でもね 上手くいったのです

we were picked up from school

24時間後

and escorted to the office of the governor.

学校に迎えが来て

MW: And there he was --

知事のオフィスに 案内されました

(Applause)

メラティ： そこに知事がいてー

waiting for us to meet and speak,

（拍手）

being all supportive and thankful for our willingness

知事が 私たちを待っていて

to care for the beauty and the environment of Bali.

バリの環境と景観美を 守ろうという意思に

He signed a promise

感謝と全面協力の意を 示してくれました

to help the people of Bali say no to plastic bags.

バリでレジ袋を撤廃するー

And we are now friends,

支援をするという 約束に署名してくれました

and on a regular basis,

今では知事は友人です

we remind him and his team of the promises he has made.

そして 知事と彼の部下に

And indeed,

その時の約束を守るよう 定期的に 念を押しています

recently he stated and committed

実際に知事は

that Bali will be plastic bag free by 2018.

最近こう宣言し 誓約しました

「バリでは 2018年までに レジ袋を撤廃する」

IW: Also, at the International Airport of Bali, one of our supporters

（拍手）

is planning to start a plastic bag-free policy by 2016.

イサベル： 私たちの支持者の中に バリ国際空港で

MW: Stop handing out free plastic bags

2016年までに レジ袋ゼロの 実施計画を立てている人もいます

and bring in your own reusable bag

メラティ： 無料レジ袋配布を止めて

is our next message to change that mindset of the public.

エコバッグを持ち歩こう

IW: Our short-term campaign,

これが 世の中の意識変革を呼びかける 次のメッセージです

"One Island / One Voice,"

イサベル： 短期キャンペーンの

is all about this.

「ひとつの島 / ひとつの声」 の

We check and recognize the shops and restaurants

目的はこれです

that have declared themselves a plastic bag-free zone,

レジ袋廃止を 自ら宣言した店や

and we put this sticker at their entrance

レストランを検査して

and publish their names on social media

店の入り口にステッカーを貼り

and some important magazines on Bali.

SNSやバリの主要な雑誌に

And conversely,

店名を公表します

that highlights those who do not have the sticker.

これで 逆に

(Laughter)

ステッカーのない店が 目立ってしまうようになります

MW: So, why are we actually telling you all of this?

（笑）

Well, partly, it is because we are proud

メラティ： ここで こうして 色々と話している

of the results that, together with our team,

理由の一つは

we have been able to reach.

仲間と協力して達成した結果に

But also because along the way,

誇りを持っているからであり

we have learned that kids can do things.

また その過程で 子どもにも

We can make things happen.

できることがあるのだと 分かったからでもあります

Isabel and I were only 10 and 12 years old

私たちでも 変化を起こせるのです

when we started this.

イサベルと私はたった10歳と12歳で

We never had a business plan,

活動を始めました

nor a fixed strategy,

ビジネスプランもなければ

nor any hidden agendas --

確固とした戦略もなく

just the idea in front of us

下心もありませんでした

and a group of friends working with us.

あったのは 目の前のアイディアと

All we wanted to do was stop those plastic bags

協力してくれる 友人たちだけでした

from wrapping and suffocating our beautiful home.

ただ 故郷が ビニールのレジ袋で覆われ

Kids have a boundless energy

窒息してしまうのを 阻止したかっただけでした

and a motivation to be the change the world needs.

子どもには 無限のエネルギーと

IW: So to all the kids of this beautiful but challenging world:

世界が必要とする変化を起こす モチベーションがあります

go for it!

イサベル： だから この美しくも険しい 世界の子どもたちに向かって言います

Make that difference.

やりましょう！

We're not telling you it's going to be easy.

変革を 起こしましょう

We're telling you it's going to be worth it.

楽な道のりだとは言いません

Us kids may only be 25 percent of the world's population,

でもやろうとする価値はあるのです

but we are 100 percent of the future.

私たち子どもは 世界の人口の わずか25%に過ぎないかもしれませんが

MW: We still have a lot of work to do,

未来の100%を担っています

but know that we still not stop
