not everyone can do well in that environment.

While many people responded in different ways

my response to the high-pressure environment

was making bows with pieces of wood

大きなプレッシャーへの 僕なりの対処法は

found near my apartment building.

Why bows?

I'm not quite sure.

なぜ弓か？

Perhaps, in the face of constant pressure,

my caveman instinct of survival

has connected with the bows.

If you think about it,

the bow has really helped drive human survival

考えてみれば

since prehistoric times.

弓のお蔭で 人間は 先史時代から生き残れたのです

The area within three kilometers of my home

used to be a mulberry forest

僕の家の 周囲３キロは

during the Joseon dynasty,

かつて桑畑でした

where silkworms were fed with mulberry leaves.

李氏朝鮮時代に

In order to raise the historical awareness of this fact,

そこで 桑の葉で 蚕を育てていたのです

the government has planted mulberry trees.

この歴史的事実を 知らしめるため

The seeds from these trees

政府は桑を植えました

also have spread by birds here and there

これらの桑の種が

nearby the soundproof walls of the city expressway

鳥によって あちこちに運ばれ

that has been built around the 1988 Olympics.

1988年のソウルオリンピックの 時代に作られた―

The area near these walls,

高速道路の防音壁のそばにも 広まりました

which nobody bothers to pay attention to,

この防音壁のあたりは

had been left free from major intervention,

誰も気にも留めておらず

and this is where I first found my treasures.

As I fell deeper into bow making,

僕が 初めて宝物を 見つけたのはここでした

I began to search far and beyond my neighborhood.

弓作りに夢中になってくると

When I went on school field trips,

僕は 近所だけでなく 遠くに探しに行くようになりました

family vacations, or simply on my way home

学校の遠足でも

from extracurricular classes,

家族旅行や 課外活動の帰り道でも

I wandered around wooded areas

and gathered tree branches

with the tools that I sneaked inside my school bag.

And they would be somethings like saws, knives,

that I covered up with a piece of towel.

I would bring the branches home,

タオルでくるんでいました

riding buses and subways,

barely holding them in my hands.

And I did not bring the tools here to Long Beach.

In the privacy of my room, covered in sawdust,

I would saw, trim and polish wood all night long

until a bow took shape.

One day, I was changing the shape of a bamboo piece

and ended up setting the place on fire.

Where? The rooftop of my apartment building,

火事になったことがありました

a place where 96 families call home.

A customer from a department store across from my building

and I ran downstairs to tell my mom

with half of my hair burned.

My mother had to do a lot of explaining,

telling people that her son did not commit

I also researched extensively on bows around the world.

In that process, I tried to combine

僕は 世界中の弓を 幅広く研究しました

the different bows from across time and places

その過程で 僕は

to create the most effective bow.

時と場所を異にする弓を 結び付け

I also worked with many different types of wood,

such as maple, yew and mulberry,

いろんな種類の木を 使いました

and did many shooting experiments

カエデやイチイ 桑などです

in the wooded area near the urban expressway

そして 何度も 弓を引く実験をしました

that I mentioned before.

The most effective bow for me

One: Curved tips can maximize the springiness

こんなものです

when you draw and shoot the arrow.

１つは 弓がよく しなって

Two: Belly is drawn inward for higher draw weight,

矢を射るときに バネがよく効くこと

which means more power.

２つ目は 矢を引いたとき 弓の胴が内側によく曲がること

Three: Sinew used in the outer layer of the limb

より大きな力が出るのです

for maximum tension storage.

３つ目は 姫反と呼ばれる 湾曲部に使われる腱が

And four: Horn used to store energy in compression.

大きな張力に 耐えうること

After fixing, breaking, redesigning,

４つ目は エネルギーを 蓄えるのに使う角です

mending, bending and amending,

調整しては壊して やり直し

my ideal bow began to take shape,

修理して曲げて また直し

and when it was finally done,

僕の理想の弓が 形になってきて

it looked like this.

I was so proud of myself

for inventing a perfect bow on my own.

Through bowmaking,

I came in contact with part of my heritage.

Learning the information that has accumulated over time

僕は 歴史と 触れ合うようになりました

and reading the message left by my ancestors

長年積み重ねられてきた知恵を学び

were better than any consolation therapy

僕の祖先が残したメッセージを 読み取ることは

or piece of advice any living adults could give me.

You see, I searched far and wide,

but never bothered to look close and near.

From this realization,

I began to take interest in Korean history,

which had never inspired me before.

In the end, the grass is often greener

今まで ちっとも 関心がなかったのに

on my side of the fence,

結局のところ 芝生が青いのは

although we don't realize it.

僕の庭の方でした

Now, I am going to show you how my bow works.

ただ 僕たちが 気づかないだけです

And let's see how this one works.

さて 僕の弓のすごさを お見せしましょう

This is a bamboo bow,

この弓にしましょう

with 45-pound draw weights.

A bow may function in a simple mechanism,

but in order to make a good bow,

a great amount of sensitivity is required.

You need to console and communicate

Each fiber in the wood

has its own reason and function for being,

木の あらゆる繊維に

and only through cooperation and harmony among them

comes a great bow.

それらが支え合い 溶け合うことによってのみ

I may be an [odd] student

素晴らしい弓が 生まれうるのです

with unconventional interests,

僕は 変わった生徒で

but I hope I am making a contribution

型破りな趣味の 持ち主かもしれません

by sharing my story with all of you.

でも ここで 僕の話を共有することで

My ideal world is a place

皆さんのお役に立てればと 思っています

where no one is left behind,

僕の理想の世界は

where everyone is needed exactly where they are,

誰もが取り残されることなく

like the fibers and the tendons in a bow,

皆が必要とされ いるべき場所にいる世界です

a place where the strong is flexible

ちょうど弓の 繊維や腱のように

and the vulnerable is resilient.

強き者は 柔軟にあり

The bow resembles me,

弱き者は 打たれ強くある場所です

and I resemble the bow.

Now, I am shooting a part of myself to you.

No, better yet, a part of my mind

僕は 僕の一部を 皆さんに放ちます

has just been shot over to your mind.
