LB: This is my first work, created in November 2005.

And this is Beijing International Art Camp where I worked

ここは北京国際芸術村です 政府が強制撤去するまで

before the government forcibly demolished it.I used this work to express my objection.

ここで制作していました この作品は反対の意志表明です

I also want to use this work to let more people

同時に芸術家の生活条件や

pay attention to the living condition of artists and the condition of their creative freedom.

創造する自由の 現状に目を向けてほしいのです

In the meantime, from the beginning, this series has a

protesting, reflective

抵抗と思索の精神 そして妥協を許さない精神が

and uncompromising spirit.

After finishing this series of protests,

I started questioning why my fate was like this,

As you can see, these works

are about family planning, election in accordance with the law

and propaganda of the institution of the People's Congress.

人民代表大会制度の宣伝を 題材にしています

This work is called Xia Gang ("leaving post").

この作品は『職場を離れた人』です

"Xia Gang" is a Chinese euphemism for "laid off".

中国語では「解雇」を 遠まわしに こう言います

It refers to those people who lost their jobs during China's transition from a planned economy to a market economy.

中国が計画経済から市場経済に 移行して職を失った人々です

From 1998 to 2000,

21.37 million people

lost their jobs in China.

The six people in the photo

ここに写っている６人も

are Xia Gang workers.

「職場を離れた」労働者です

I made them invisible in the deserted shop wherethey had lived and worked all their lives.

６人を 彼らが住み込みで 働いていた店舗跡で見えなくしました

On the wall behind them is the slogan of the Cultural Revolution:

背後の壁には文化大革命の スローガンがあります

"The core force leading our cause forward is the Chinese Communist Party."

For half a month

私は半月間 ―

I looked for these 6 people to participate in my work.

作品に参加してくれる 人々を探していました

We can only see six men in this picture,but in fact, those who are hidden here

ここには６人しかいませんが 本当は解雇された全ての労働者が

are all people who were laid off. They have just been made invisible.

隠されています 見えないだけなのです

This piece is called The Studio.

This spring,

I happened to have an opportunity during my solo exhibition in Paris

パリで個展を開いているときに

to shoot a work in the news studio of France 3 --

France3 のニュース・スタジオで 撮影する機会に恵まれました

I picked the news photos of the day.

私が選んだのは 当日のニュース写真です

One is about the war in the Middle East,

１枚は中東での戦争 ―

and another one is about a public demonstration in France.

もう1枚はフランスの デモの写真です

I found that any culture has its irreconcilable contradictions.

どの文化にも どうしようもない 矛盾があることに気づきました

This is a joint effort between me and French artist JR.

これは私とフランスの芸術家 JR との共同制作です

LB: I tried to disappear into JR's eye,

LB: 私はJR が撮った目の 中に溶け込もうとしました

but the problem is JR only uses models with big eyes.

ただ JR は目の大きな モデルしか使いません

So I tried to make my eyes bigger with my fingers.

私は指で目を開きましたが

But still they are not big enough for JR, unfortunately.

残念ながら それでも小さすぎました

Interpreter: So I tried to disappear into JR's eye,

but the problem is JR uses only models with big eyes.

So I tried to make my eyes bigger with this gesture.

But it doesn't work, my eyes are still small.

Because global temperatures rise,

When I work on a new piece, I pay more attention to the expression of ideas.

新たな作品を作るときは 思考が表れるように 注意を払います

For instance, why would I make myself invisible?

例えば どうして自分を見えなくするのか？

What will making myself invisible here cause people to think?

ここで見えなくなることで 人に何を考えさせられるか？

This one is called Instant Noodles.

これは「即席ラーメン」という作品です

LB: Since August 2012,

LB: 2012年８月以降 中国国内のスーパーで販売された

harmful phosphors have been found

全ての有名ブランドの 即席ラーメンの容器から

in the instant noodle package cups from every famous brand sold in China's supermarkets.

有害な蛍光物質が見つかりました

These phosphors can even cause cancer.

この蛍光物質には 発がん性もあります

To create this artwork,

この作品を作るために

I bought a lot of packaged instant noodle cups

カップめんをたくさん買い

and put them in my studio, making it look like a supermarket.

スタジオに陳列して スーパーに見えるようにしました

And my task is to stand there, trying to be still,

私の仕事は立って 動かないようにすることです

setting up the camera position and coordinating with my assistant

そしてカメラの位置を決め 助手と協力して

and drawing the colors and shapes that are behind my body

私の体の後ろにある色や形を

on the front of my body. If the background is simple,

I usually have to stand for three to four hours.

The background of this piece is more complex,

Unsafe food can harm people's health,

安全性の低い食品は 人々の健康を害しますが

and a deluge of magazines can confuse people's minds. (Laughter)

大量の雑誌は 人々の心を惑わせます （笑）

The next pieces of work show how I made myself invisible in magazines of different languages,

次の作品では 言葉も国も時代もさまざまな ―

in different countries and at different times.

雑誌の中で いかに自分を 見えなくするかを表しています

I think that in art, an artist's attitude is the most important element.

私は芸術で最も重要な要素は 芸術家の姿勢だと考えています

If an artwork is to touch someone,

芸術作品が人を 感動させるとしたら

it must be the result of not only technique, but also the artist's thinking and struggle in life.

それは技巧だけでなく 芸術家の思考と苦労の成果です

And the repeated struggles in life create artwork,

人生で苦労を 繰り返すことを通して

no matter in what form.

どんな形であれ 芸術作品が生まれます
