There's a group of people in Kenya.

ケニアには ある民族が住んでいます

People cross oceans to go see them.

海を越え 多くの人々が彼らを見に訪れます

These people are tall.

彼らは背が高く

They jump high. They wear red.

高くジャンプし 赤い服を着て

And they kill lions.

ライオンを殺します

You might be wondering, who are these people?

さあ なんという民族でしょうか

These are the Maasais.

答えは マサイです

And you know what's cool? I'm actually one of them.

なにがすごいって？ 私もマサイなんです

The Maasais, the boys are brought up to be warriors.

マサイでは 男の子は戦士になるよう育てられ

The girls are brought up to be mothers.

女の子は母親になるように育てられます

When I was five years old,

私が5才の時

I found out that I was engaged

私が思春期に入ったら

to be married as soon as I reached puberty.

結婚をすることが すでに決まっていると知りました

My mother, my grandmother, my aunties,

母も 祖母も おばも

they constantly reminded me that

いつも私にこう言っていました

your husband just passed by.

「ほら、あれが将来の旦那さんよ！」

(Laughter) Cool, yeah?

（笑） すごいでしょう？

And everything I had to do from that moment

それ以来 私がしたことは

was to prepare me to be a perfect woman at age 12.

12才の時 完璧な女性になっているために 準備をすることだけでした

My day started at 5 in the morning,

1日は朝5時に始まり

milking the cows, sweeping the house,

牛の乳をしぼり 家を掃除し

cooking for my siblings, collecting water, firewood.

兄弟のご飯の用意をし 水を汲みに出掛け まきを集めます

I did everything that I needed to do

完璧な女性に求められることを

to become a perfect wife.

私は全てしていました

I went to school not because the Maasais'

私は学校へ通っていましたが

women or girls were going to school.

それは他のマサイの女性も 通っていたからではありません

It's because my mother was denied an education,

私の母が教育を受けることが出来なかったからです

and she constantly reminded me and my siblings that

彼女は日頃から私達兄弟にこう言っていました

she never wanted us to live the life she was living.

「自分と同じような人生を歩んでほしくない」と

Why did she say that?

なぜそんなことを言ったのでしょうか

My father worked as a policeman in the city.

私の父は町の警察官でした

He came home once a year.

家に帰ってくるのは年に一度で

We didn't see him for sometimes even two years.

2年間も父に会わないことがありました

And whenever he came home, it was a different case.

父が家に帰ると日常は一変します

My mother worked hard in the farm

母は畑で一生懸命に働いて

to grow crops so that we can eat.

私達の食べる穀物を育てています

She reared the cows and the goats

母は牛や羊を育て

so that she can care for us.

私達の面倒を見ています

But when my father came, he would sell the cows,

しかし父が家へ帰ると 家畜を売り

he would sell the products we had,

家のものを売ってしまい

and he went and drank with his friends in the bars.

友達とバーで飲むお金にするのです

Because my mother was a woman,

女性である母は

she was not allowed to own any property,

どんな財産も所有する権利がなく

and by default, everything in my family anyway

当然のように 私達の家にあるものは

belongs to my father, so he had the right.

すべて父のものであり 所有権は父にありました

And if my mother ever questioned him,

もし母が父に反抗すると

he beat her, abused her, and really it was difficult.

殴られ 虐待されるので 反抗なんて出来ませんでした

When I went to school, I had a dream.

私が学校に通っていた頃 私には夢がありました

I wanted to become a teacher.

先生になりたかったのです

Teachers looked nice.

先生はかっこいいですよね

They wear nice dresses, high-heeled shoes.

きれいな服をきて ハイヒールをはいています

I found out later that they are uncomfortable, but I admired it.

後になってハイヒールって大変だと気付きましたが でも憧れてました

(Laughter)

（笑）

But most of all, the teacher was just writing on the board --

特に 先生の仕事は黒板に何か書くだけです

not hard work, that's what I thought,

簡単じゃない！ 私はそう思いました

compared to what I was doing in the farm.

私が畑でしていることに比べたらとても楽です

So I wanted to become a teacher.

だから私は先生になりたかったのです

I worked hard in school, but when I was in eighth grade,

学校では一生懸命勉強をしました しかし中学生の時

it was a determining factor.

私は決断を迫られました

In our tradition, there is a ceremony

マサイには伝統的な儀式があり

that girls have to undergo to become women,

女の子はみな それを経験しなければなりません

and it's a rite of passage to womanhood.

大人の女性になるための儀式です

And then I was just finishing my eighth grade,

私は中学校を卒業し

and that was a transition for me to go to high school.

私にとって高校進学への過渡期でした

This was the crossroad.

人生の分岐点です

Once I go through this tradition, I was going to become a wife.

この通過儀礼を受ければ 私は妻となります

Well, my dream of becoming a teacher will not come to pass.

先生になるという私の夢は叶いません

So I talked -- I had to come up with a plan

そこで私は この問題を解決するために

to figure these things out.

ある作戦を考えました

I talked to my father. I did something that most girls have never done.

私は父に 他の女の子なら 絶対にしないようなお願いをしました

I told my father, "I will only go through this ceremony

私は父に言いました 「儀式にきちんと最後まで参加します

if you let me go back to school."

また学校にまた通わせてくれると 約束してくれるなら」と

The reason why, if I ran away,

もし私が儀式から逃げ出したら

my father will have a stigma, people will be calling him

父は大きな恥をかき 人々に

the father of that girl who didn't go through the ceremony.

「儀式から逃げ出した娘の父親」と後ろ指を指されます

It was a shameful thing for him to carry the rest of his life.

汚名を背負って生きていくのは耐えられません

So he figured out. "Well," he said, "okay,

ですから父は「わかった 儀式に参加したら

you'll go to school after the ceremony."

学校にまた通ってもいい」と言いました

I did. The ceremony happened.

私は儀式に参加しました

It's a whole week long of excitement.

1週間にわたる大きなお祭りです

It's a ceremony. People are enjoying it.

人々はとても楽しんでいました

And the day before the actual ceremony happens,

そして実際に儀式が行われる前日に

we were dancing, having excitement,

私達は踊り 楽しみ

and through all the night we did not sleep.

寝ずに夜を明かしました

The actual day came, and we walked out of the house

儀式の日が来て 私達は踊っていた家から出て

that we were dancing in. Yes, we danced and danced.

踊りながら歩いていきました

We walked out to the courtyard, and there were a bunch of people waiting.

広場へ行くと 大勢の人が待っていました

They were all in a circle.

皆 輪になっていました

And as we danced and danced,

私達は踊りながら

and we approached this circle of women,

その輪に近づいて行きました

men, women, children, everybody was there.

女性も男性も子供も 村中の人がその輪に参加していました

There was a woman sitting in the middle of it,

輪の中心には女性がいて

and this woman was waiting to hold us.

座って私達を待っていました

I was the first. There were my sisters and a couple of other girls,

私の姉や他の女の子もいましたが 私が一番手でした

and as I approached her,

その女性に近寄った時

she looked at me, and I sat down.

彼女が私を見たので 座りました

And I sat down, and I opened my legs.

そして 脚を広げました

As I opened my leg, another woman came,

脚を広げると 別の女性がやって来ました

and this woman was carrying a knife.

ナイフを持っていました

And as she carried the knife, she walked toward me

ナイフを持って 私の方に歩み寄り

and she held the clitoris, and she cut it off.

私の性器をつまむと それを切り落としました

As you can imagine, I bled. I bled.

ご想像通り 大量の血が流れました

After bleeding for a while, I fainted thereafter.

しばらく出血した後 私は意識を失いました

It's something that so many girls --

多くの女の子はこれにより命を失いますが

I'm lucky, I never died -- but many die.

私は幸運でした 死にませんでした

It's practiced, it's no anesthesia, it's a rusty old knife,

麻酔もなく ナイフは錆びていたので

and it was difficult.

とてもつらいものでした

I was lucky because one, also, my mom did something

私は幸運でした 多くの母親がしないことを

that most women don't do.

私の母がしてくれたからです

Three days later, after everybody has left the home,

儀式の3日後 家から人がいなくなったときに

my mom went and brought a nurse.

母は看護婦を呼びにいってくれたのです

We were taken care of.

私達姉妹はきちんとした手当を受け

Three weeks later, I was healed, and I was back in high school.

3週間後に私は回復し 学校へ戻ることが出来ました

I was so determined to be a teacher now

私の「先生になる」という決意は固まっていました

so that I could make a difference in my family.

家族に変化をもたらすためです

Well, while I was in high school, something happened.

高校生のときに ある事が起こりました

I met a young gentleman from our village

私の村の出身の若い男性と出会ったのです

who had been to the University of Oregon.

彼はオレゴン大学へ留学していました

This man was wearing a white t-shirt, jeans, camera,

白いシャツとジーンズという格好で カメラを持ち

white sneakers -- and I'm talking about white sneakers.

スニーカーを履いていました 真っ白のスニーカーです

There is something about clothes, I think, and shoes.

服装が何か違った そして靴も

They were sneakers, and this is in a village

スニーカーを履いていたんです この村には

that doesn't even have paved roads. It was quite attractive.

舗装された道路なんでないので そのスニーカーはとても魅力的でした

I told him, "Well, I want to go to where you are,"

私は彼に言いました 「あなたのいたところに行ってみたいわ」と

because this man looked very happy, and I admired that.

彼はとても幸せそうに見え うらやましかったのです

And he told me, "Well,

彼は聞きました「ええと

what do you mean, you want to go?

行きたいって どういうこと？

Don't you have a husband waiting for you?"

あなたのことを待っている旦那さんが ここにはいるんじゃないの？」

And I told him, "Don't worry about that part.

私は「そのことはご心配なく

Just tell me how to get there."

行き方を教えてくれるだけでいいの」と言いました

This gentleman, he helped me.

この男性が 私を助けてくれました

While I was in high school also, my dad was sick.

また 高校在学中 父が病気になりました

He got a stroke, and he was really, really sick,

とても重たい脳卒中だったので

so he really couldn't tell me what to do next.

父は私に命令することができませんでした

But the problem is, my father is not the only father I have.

しかし 私の父はひとりだけではないのです

Everybody who is my dad's age, male in the community,

私の村にいる父と同じくらいの年の男性は

is my father by default --

初めからみんな私の父なのです

my uncles, all of them -- and they dictate what my future is.

おじさんみたいなものですね 彼らも私の将来について命令をします

So the news came, I applied to school

そんなときある知らせが入りました

and I was accepted to Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Virginia,

私が応募していたバージニアの ランドルフ・マコン女子大学からの合格通知です

and I couldn't come without the support of the village,

しかし 村の助けがなければ通うことはできません

because I needed to raise money to buy the air ticket.

航空券を買うお金を得る必要があったからです

I got a scholarship but I needed to get myself here.

奨学金もありましたが 自分でもある程度用意する必要がありました

But I needed the support of the village,

でも村の助けが必要でした

and here again, when the men heard,

しかし村の男性は

and the people heard that a woman had gotten an opportunity to go to school,

「女の子が大学へ通うチャンスをもらった」なんて聞くと

they said, "What a lost opportunity.

こう言います「なんてもったいない！

This should have been given to a boy. We can't do this."

こういう機会は男の子に与えられるべきだ！ 援助なんて出来ないよ」

So I went back and I had to go back to the tradition.

そこで私は また村の伝統を利用しました

There's a belief among our people

この人々は信じています

that morning brings good news.

いい知らせは朝にやってくると

So I had to come up with something to do with the morning,

ですから 何か解決するには朝でなければなりませんでした

because there's good news in the morning.

いい知らせは朝にやってくるからです

And in the village also, there is one chief, an elder,

村にはみんなのリーダーである年長者がいて

who if he says yes, everybody will follow him.

彼が賛成すれば 皆がそれに従います

So I went to him very early in the morning, as the sun rose.

そこで私は 日が昇るとすぐに朝早く彼を訪ねました

The first thing he sees when he opens his door is, it's me.

彼がドアを開けると そこには私が立っていました

"My child, what are you doing here?"

「こんな朝早くに 何をしているんだ？」

"Well, Dad, I need help. Can you support me to go to America?"

「助けが必要なんです 私がアメリカに行く 援助をしてくれませんか」と私は言いました

I promised him that I would be the best girl,

私は良き女性となっていつか村に帰ってくること

I will come back, anything they wanted after that,

そしてその後 村の人々が望むことを何でもすると

I will do it for them.

私は彼に約束しました

He said, "Well, but I can't do it alone."

彼は「私一人で決められる問題ではない」と言いました

He gave me a list of another 15 men that I went --

彼は 私に村の１５人の男性の 名前のリストを渡しました

16 more men -- every single morning

いや１6人の男性でした 毎朝

I went and visited them.

彼らに会いに行きました

They all came together.

彼らはみな協力してくれました

The village, the women, the men, everybody came together

村の女性も 子供も みな協力して

to support me to come to get an education.

私が教育を受けるための援助をしてくれました

I arrived in America. As you can imagine, what did I find?

そうしてアメリカにいくことができました そこで私が見たものはなんでしょう

I found snow!

まず 雪を見ました！

I found Wal-Marts, vacuum cleaners,

そしてウォルマートや電気掃除機を初めて見て

and lots of food in the cafeteria.

カフェテリアに並ぶ 食べものの多さに驚きました

I was in a land of plenty.

私は今や恵まれた国にいるのです

I enjoyed myself, but during that moment while I was here,

思い切り楽しんでいましたが 私はアメリカにいる間に

I discovered a lot of things.

多くのことを学びました

I learned that that ceremony that I went through

私が13才のときに経験した儀式は

when I was 13 years old, it was called female genital mutilation.

女性の割礼と呼ばれるもので

I learned that it was against the law in Kenya.

ケニアの法律に反するものだと知りました

I learned that I did not have to trade part of my body

私は教育を得るために 自分の体を傷つける必要などなかったのです

to get an education. I had a right.

私には教育を受ける権利があったのです

And as we speak right now, three million girls

この瞬間も アフリカでは300万人もの女の子が

in Africa are at risk of going through this mutilation.

このような儀式を受ける危険にさらされています

I learned that my mom had a right to own property.

また 私の母には財産の所有権があったのだと学びました

I learned that she did not have to be abused

女性だからという理由で 父に暴力を振るわれる

because she is a woman.

必要はなかったのです

Those things made me angry.

これらのことを学び 私は憤慨しました

I wanted to do something.

なにか行動を起こしたいと思いました

As I went back, every time I went,

故郷へ帰るといつも

I found that my neighbors' girls were getting married.

私の近所の女の子が結婚をしていくのを見ます

They were getting mutilated, and here,

私が受けた儀式を彼女たちも受けています

after I graduated from here, I worked at the U.N.,

私は大学を卒業し 国連で働いて

I went back to school to get my graduate work,

その後 大学院へ入り直しましたが

the constant cry of these girls was in my face.

彼女たちの泣き顔を 思い浮かべない日はありませんでした

I had to do something.

何かをしなければと思いました

As I went back, I started talking to the men,

故郷へ帰り 村の男性 女性と話をしました

to the village, and mothers, and I said,

そして私はこう言いました

"I want to give back the way I had promised you

「 いつか戻ってきてあなた達の望むことを なんでもするという約束を

that I would come back and help you. What do you need?"

今果たします なにをすればいいですか」と

As I spoke to the women, they told me,

女性と話した時には こう言われました

"You know what we need? We really need a school for girls."

「女の子が通える学校が必要だわ」と

Because there had not been any school for girls.

村には女の子が通える学校がなかったからです

And the reason they wanted the school for girls

さらに 女の子が学校へ通っている最中に

is because when a girl is raped when she's walking to school,

レイプに遭うと 責められるのは

the mother is blamed for that.

その母親でした

If she got pregnant before she got married,

女の子が結婚前に妊娠すると

the mother is blamed for that, and she's punished.

母親が責められ 罰を受けるのです

She's beaten.

母親が叩かれます

They said, "We wanted to put our girls in a safe place."

彼女たちは 「娘には安全な場所にいて欲しいの」と言いました

As we moved, and I went to talk to the fathers,

しかし 村の父親と話をすると

the fathers, of course, you can imagine what they said:

もちろん全く反対のことを言います

"We want a school for boys."

「男の子のための学校が必要だ」と

And I said, "Well, there are a couple of men from my village

私は答えました「村にいる男性の中の数人は

who have been out and they have gotten an education.

外で教育を受けています

Why can't they build a school for boys,

彼らが男の子のための学校を建てて

and I'll build a school for girls?"

私が女の子のための学校を建てるというのは どうでしょうか」と提案しました

That made sense. And they agreed.

彼らは納得してくれました

And I told them, I wanted them to show me a sign of commitment.

さらに私は 「約束の証を見せてほしい」と言いました

And they did. They donated land where we built the girls' school.

すると彼らは 女の子の学校を 建てるための土地をくれました

We have.

そして学校を建てました

and she did not meet any criteria that we had.

and we were taking girls who were in fourth grade.
