初めてカメラを 手にした時から

ever since I was old enough to pick up a camera,

写真は 私がずっと 情熱を傾けてきたものです

but today I want to share with you

今日は 私が一番 大切にしている

the 15 most treasured photos of mine,

15枚の写真を お見せしますが いずれも—

and I didn't take any of them.

私が撮ったもの ではありません

There were no art directors, no stylists,

アート・ディレクターも スタイリストもいなければ

no chance for reshoots, not even any regard for lighting.

撮り直すチャンスもなく 光の加減すら気にしていない

In fact, most of them were taken by random tourists.

実のところ ほとんどは 見知らぬ人に 撮ってもらったものなんです

My story begins

この物語の始まりは

when I was in New York City for a speaking engagement,

ニューヨークへ 講演で行った折りに

and my wife took this picture of me holding my daughter

１歳の誕生日を迎えた娘を 抱える私を

on her first birthday. We're on the corner of 57th and 5th.

妻が写真に撮った時でした 57丁目と5番街の角のところです

We happened to be back in New York exactly a year later,

ちょうどその１年後に たまたま ニューヨークに行くことになり

so we decided to take the same picture.

また同じ写真を 撮ることにしました

Well you can see where this is going.

その後どうなったのか 予想が付くでしょう

Approaching my daughter's third birthday,

娘の３歳の誕生日が 近づいたとき

my wife said, "Hey, why don't you take Sabina back to New York

妻が言ったんです 「サブリナとまた

and make it a father-daughter trip, and continue the ritual?"

ニューヨークに行ったらいいんじゃない？ 父娘旅行を恒例にしたら？」

This is when we started asking passing tourists to take the picture.

この時から 行きずりの人に 写真を頼むようになりました

You know, it's remarkable how universal

赤の他人にカメラを 渡すジェスチャーは

the gesture is of handing your camera to a total stranger.

驚くくらい 誰にでも通じます

No one's ever refused, and luckily no one's ever run off with our camera.

一度も断られたことはありません 幸い カメラを持って逃げる人もいませんでした

Back then, we had no idea how much this trip would change our lives.

これが 私たちの人生を変えることになるとは 当時は予想だにしませんでした

It's really become sacred to us.

私たちにとって 本当に 神聖なものになったのです

This one was taken just weeks after 9/11,

これは9.11の何週間か 後に撮ったものです

and I found myself trying to explain what had happened that day

その日 起こった出来事を 私は どうにか

in ways a five-year-old could understand.

５歳の子にも分かるよう 説明しようとしていました

So these photos are far more than proxies

これらの写真には ある一瞬や

for a single moment, or even a specific trip.

特定の旅行の記録という以上の 価値があります

They're also ways for us to freeze time

ある10月の１週間という―

for one week in October

時間を閉じ込め

and reflect on our times

自分たちが過ごした 時を思い返し

and how we change from year to year,

肉体的にも その他の面でも

and not just physically, but in every way.

年々どう変わってきたのか 見直す方法でもあるのです

Because while we take the same photo,

同じ写真を 撮っていても

our perspectives change,

私たちの ものの見方は 変わっていきます

and she reaches new milestones,

娘は新たな節目を いくつも迎え

and I get to see life through her eyes,

私は娘の目を通して ものを見るようになりました

and how she interacts with and sees everything.

娘が周りと どう関わり どんな見方をするか 分かるようになりました

This very focused time we get to spend together

共に過ごす この特別な時間を 私たちは大切にし

is something we cherish and anticipate the entire year.

一年中待ち望むように なりました

Recently, on one trip, we were walking,

最近の旅行でのことですが 通りを歩いていると

and she stops dead in her tracks,

娘が凍り付いたように 立ち止まり

and she points to a red awning of the doll store

とある店の赤い日よけを 指さしました

that she loved when she was little

幼い頃 訪れた際に見つけて

on our earlier trips.

すごく気に入った 人形の店です

And she describes to me the feeling she felt

５歳の自分がその場で

as a five-year-old standing in that exact spot.

どんな風に感じたか 話してくれました

She said she remembers her heart bursting out of her chest

９年前に訪れて 初めてその店を見たとき

when she saw that place for the very first time

心臓が胸から飛び出しそうなくらい ドキドキしたのを

nine years earlier.

はっきり覚えていると

And now what she's looking at in New York

今 娘が この街に見ているのは

are colleges,

大学です

because she's determined to go to school in New York.

ニューヨークの大学に行くと 心に決めているのです

And it hit me: One of the most important things

それで気付かされました

we all make are memories.

私たちが作る最も大切なものは 思い出なのだと

So I want to share the idea of taking an active role

だから私は皆さんにも 積極的に

in consciously creating memories.

思い出を作ってほしいと 伝えたいのです

I don't know about you, but aside from these 15 shots,

皆さんはどうか分かりませんが 私はこの15枚を別にすると

I'm not in many of the family photos.

自分の写真が あまりありません

I'm always the one taking the picture.

私はいつも撮る側です

So I want to encourage everyone today

自分も写真に入ることを

to get in the shot,

お勧めします

and don't hesitate to go up to someone and ask,

ためらわずに頼みましょう

"Will you take our picture?"

「写真を撮ってもらえませんか？」と
