Twelve years ago, I was in the street writing my name

12年前は ストリートで自分の名前を 書いていました

to say, "I exist."

「自分は存在する」と言うために

Then I went to taking photos of people to paste them on the street

その後 人々の写真を撮って ストリートに貼りました

to say, "They exist."

「彼らが存在する」と言うためです

From the suburbs of Paris to the wall of Israel and Palestine,

パリの郊外で イスラエルとパレスチナの壁で ―

the rooftops of Kenya

ケニヤの屋根で ―

to the favelas of Rio,

リオの貧民街で ―

paper and glue -- as easy as that.

紙とノリだけ ― 簡単です

I asked a question last year:

去年 ある問いかけをしました

Can art change the world?

アートは世界を変えられるか？

Well let me tell you,

ただ ―

in terms of changing the world there has been a lot of competition this year,

世界を変えようにも 今年は 競う相手が多いんです

because the Arab Spring is still spreading,

アラブの春は 拡大中 ―

the Eurozone has collapsed ... what else?

ユーロ圏は崩壊して … 他には？

The Occupy movement found a voice,

占拠運動は 自分の言葉で主張をはじめましたが

and I still have to speak English constantly.

僕はまだ 常に英語を話す羽目になっています

So there has been a lot of change.

とにかく いろいろな変化がありました

So when I had my TED wish last year,

だから去年 TED wish で

I said, look, I'm going to switch my concept.

コンセプトを変えることを宣言しました

You are going to take the photos.

皆さんが 写真を撮り

You're going to send them to me.

僕に写真を送るんです

I'm going to print them and send them back to you.

僕は印刷して 送り返すので

Then you're going to paste them where it makes sense

皆さんは 自分の主張を表現するのに

for you to place your own statement.

ふさわしい場所に 写真を貼るのです

This is Inside Out.

これが Inside Outです

One hundred thousand posters have been printed this year.

今年は 10万枚のポスターを印刷しました

Those are the kind of posters, let me show you.

And we keep sending more every day.

毎日 どんどん送っています

This is the size.

この大きさです

Just a regular piece of paper with a little bit of ink on it.

普通の紙に 少しのインク それだけです

This one was from Haiti.

これは ハイチから

When I launched my wish last year,

去年 自分の願いを発表したところ

hundreds of people stood up and said they wanted to help us.

たくさんの人が 手伝いたいと言ってくれました

But I say it has to be

ただし 僕自身が守ってきた

under the conditions I've always worked:

条件の下で やってもらっています

no credit, no logos, no sponsoring.

クレジットもロゴもスポンサーも 無しです

A week later, a handful of people were there ready to rock

１週間後 ひと握りの人が集まって

and empower the people on the ground

世界を変えようとする ―

who wanted to change the world.

地上の人々に 力を与えました

These are the people I want to talk about to you today.

今日話したいのは こういう人達のことです

Two weeks after my speech, in Tunisia,

スピーチの２週間後 チュニジアで

hundreds of portraits were made.

何百というポートレートが 制作されました

And they pasted [over] every single portrait of the dictator

そして 独裁者の肖像という肖像に ―

[with] their own photos.

自分達の写真を貼ったのです

Boom! This is what happened.

どうです！見てください

Slim and his friends went through the country

スリムは 友達と

and pasted hundreds of photos everywhere

国内を巡って いたるところに写真を貼りました

to show the diversity in the country.

自分達の国の多様性を 示すためです

They really make Inside Out their own project.

彼らは Inside Out を 自分達のものにしています

Actually, that photo was pasted in a police station,

実は この写真は 警察署に貼られていて

and what you see on the ground

are ID cards of all the photos of people being tracked by the police.

Russia. Chad wanted to fight against homophobia in Russia.

ロシア ― チャドは国内の同性愛嫌悪に対抗しようと考えました

He went with his friends in front of every Russian embassy in Europe

友達とヨーロッパ中のロシア大使館に出かけ

and stood there with the photos

写真を掲げました 彼らの主張は

to say, "We have rights."

「我々にも 権利がある」

They used Inside Out as a platform for protest.

Karachi, Pakistan.

Sharmeen is actually here.

She organized a TEDx action out there

wanted to show that the Native Americans are still here.

The seventh generation are still fighting for their rights.

７世代目にあたる人々が権利を求めて 闘争中です

He pasted up portraits all over his reservation.

彼は 居留地全域にポートレートを貼りました

And he's here also today.

Each time I get a wall in New York,

僕は ニューヨークに来るたびに壁を見つけては

I use his photos to continue spreading the project.

Juarez: You've heard of the border --

one of the most dangerous borders in the world.

世界で最も危険な国境のひとつです

Monica has taken thousands of portraits with a group of photographers

and covered the entire border.

Do you know what it takes to do this?

People, energy, make the glue, organize the team.

It was amazing.

While in Iran at the same time

Abololo -- of course a nickname --

アブロロが ― 当然ニックネームですが ―

has pasted one single face of a woman

一人の女性の顔を貼りだして

to show his resistance against the government.

政府への抵抗を表明しました

I don't have to explain to you what kind of risk he took for that action.

彼がどれほど危険を冒したかは 言うまでもありません

There are tons of school projects.

学校でのプロジェクトもたくさんあります

Twenty percent of the posters we are receiving comes from schools.

扱ったポスターの２割は 学校からです

Education is so essential.

教育は とても大切です

Kids just make photos in a class, the teacher receives them,

子どもがクラスで撮影し 先生がポスターを受け取って

they paste them on the school.

校舎に貼ります

Here they even got the help of the firemen.

ここでは消防士の手も借りています

There should be even more schools doing this kind of project.

こんなプロジェクトに取り組む学校が 増えるといいですね

Of course we wanted to go back to Israel and Palestine.

僕達は イスラエルとパレスチナに もう一度 行こうと考えました

So we went there with a truck. This is a photobooth truck.

今回はトラックで行きました これはフォトブース・トラックです

You go on the back of that truck, it takes your photo,

後ろに乗ると 写真が撮れます

30 seconds later take it from the side, you're ready to rock.

30秒後に受け取って 準備OK

Thousands of people use them

数千人が利用し ―

and each of them signs up for a two-state peace solution

２国間解決案に 署名して

and then walk in the street.

ストリートに向かいました

This is march, the 450,000 march -- beginning of September.

45万人の行進 ― ９月のはじめです

They were all holding their photo as a statement.

写真を声明として掲げています

On the other side, people were wrapping up streets, buildings.

こちらでは ストリートや建物に写真を貼っています

It's everywhere.

あらゆる場所です

Come on, don't tell me that people aren't ready for peace out there.

あっちは 平和の準備ができてない なんて言ってはいけません

These projects took thousands of actions in one year,

プロジェクトは １年で数千の行動を引き起こし

making hundreds of thousands of people participating,

何万人もの人が参加して

creating millions of views.

数百万ビューを生み出しています

This is the biggest global art participatory project that's going on.

現在進行中のものでは 世界最大規模の 参加型アートプロジェクトです

So back to the question, "Can art change the world?"

ここで はじめの問いに戻りましょう 「アートは世界を変えられるか？」

Maybe not in one year. That's the beginning.

１年では たぶん無理です　ほんのはじまりに過ぎません

But maybe we should change the question.

ただ 質問を変える必要があるかもしれません

Can art change people's lives?

アートは 人生を変えられるか？

From what I've seen this year, yes.

今年見てきた限り 答えはイエス

And you know what? It's just the beginning.

そしてこれはまだ はじめの一歩なんです

Let's turn the world inside out together.

一緒に世界をひっくり返しましょう
