I had a plan,

and I never ever thought

Little did I know

what a huge impact it would have on me one night

That sound was just so beautiful,

and the rippling groove of the banjo.

And after being totally and completely obsessed

with the mammoth richness and history

そして その頃中国の文化の

of Chinese culture,

とてつもない深みと長い歴史に

it was like this total relief

取り憑かれたようになっていた私にとって

to hear something so truly American

すごくホッとすることだったんです

and so truly awesome.

これほどまでにアメリカ的で

I knew I had to take a banjo with me to China.

これほどまでに素晴らしい曲を聞けたのは—

So before going to law school in China

中国にバンジョーを持って行かなければと思い

I bought a banjo, I threw it in my little red truck

中国のロースクールに行く前に

and I traveled down through Appalachia

バンジョーを買い 小さな赤いトラックに積み込んで

and I learned a bunch of old American songs,

アパラチアを南下する旅をして

and I ended up in Kentucky

たくさんの古いアメリカ民謡を覚え

at the International Bluegrass Music Association Convention.

ケンタッキーにたどり着きました

And I was sitting in a hallway one night

そこでは国際ブルーグラス音楽協会の大会をやっていました

and a couple girls came up to me.

And they said, "Hey, do you want to jam?"

And I was like, "Sure."

So I picked up my banjo

and I nervously played four songs that I actually knew with them.

And a record executive walked up to me

知っている曲を４曲 緊張しながら一緒に演奏していると

and invited me to Nashville, Tennessee to make a record.

レコード会社の人が近づいてきて

テネシー州のナッシュビルでレコードを作ろうと言ってくれました

It's been eight years,

(笑)

and I can tell you that I didn't go to China to become a lawyer.

あれから８年になります

In fact, I went to Nashville.

結局弁護士になるために中国に行くことはありませんでした

And after a few months I was writing songs.

かわりにナッシュビルに行ったのです

And the first song I wrote was in English,

数ヶ月後には 曲を作っていました

and the second one was in Chinese.

最初の曲は英語で

It's really been eight years since that fated night in Kentucky.

And I've played thousands of shows.

あのケンタッキーでの運命の夜から８年が過ぎ

And I've collaborated

with so many incredible, inspirational musicians around the world.

And I see the power of music.

I see the power of music

I see it when I stand on a stage

in a bluegrass festival in east Virginia

and I look out at the sea of lawn chairs

and I bust out into a song in Chinese.

And everybody's eyes just pop wide open

like it's going to fall out of their heads.

皆 目玉が飛び出て落っこちそうなほど驚いて

And they're like, "What's that girl doing?"

こんな風に囁き合っていました

And then they come up to me after the show

「あの娘は何を歌っとるんだね？」

and they all have a story.

そしてショーの後 彼らは私の所にやってきました

They all come up and they're like,

みんな話したがっていました

"You know, my aunt's sister's babysitter's dog's chicken went to China

私の所に来てこんな風に言うんです

and adopted a girl."

「うちの叔母の・姉の・ベビーシッターの・犬の・にわとりは

And I tell you what, it like everybody's got a story.

中国で女の子を養女にしたのよ」

It's just incredible.

ほんとに誰もが中国にまつわる話を持っているみたいなんです

And then I go to China

信じられないほどの驚きでした

and I stand on a stage at a university

また 私が中国に行った時のこと

and I bust out into a song in Chinese

私は大学のステージに立ち

and everybody sings along

突然中国の歌を歌い始めました

and they roar with delight

観客は喜びにあふれて

at this girl

一緒に歌い出しました

with the hair and the instrument,

こんな少女が

and she's singing their music.

こんな髪で こんな楽器を持った少女が

And I see, even more importantly,

彼らの歌を歌ったからです

the power of music to connect hearts.

さらに重要なのは

Like the time I was in Sichuan Province

音楽の力が 心を一つにしたことです

and I was singing for kids in relocation schools

四川省に行った時もそうでした

in the earthquake disaster zone.

地震の被災地から移転した学校で

And this little girl comes up to me.

子供達のために歌いました

すると小さな女の子が私の所に来ました

"Big sister Wong,"

[中国語]

Washburn, Wong, same difference.

「ウォンおねえちゃん」

"Big sister Wong, can I sing you a song

ウォッシュバーンとウォン 似たようなものです

that my mom sang for me

「ウォンおねえちゃん おうたを歌ってもいい？

before she was swallowed in the earthquake?"

地震でいなくなっちゃう前に

And I sat down,

お母さんが歌ってくれた おうたを」

she sat on my lap.

そこに腰を下ろし

She started singing her song.

女の子をひざの上に乗せると

And the warmth of her body

その子は歌い始めました

and the tears rolling down her rosy cheeks,

その子の体のぬくもりと

and I started to cry.

バラ色の頬を濡らす涙に

And the light that shone off of her eyes

私も泣き出しました

was a place I could have stayed forever.

その子の目の光の中に

And in that moment, we weren't our American selves,

ずっと留まっていたいと願いました

we weren't our Chinese selves,

その瞬間 私たちは アメリカ人でも

we were just mortals

中国人でもなく

sitting together in that light that keeps us here.

私たちを地上につなぎとめる その光の中に—

I want to dwell in that light

寄り添って座る 同じただの人間でした

with you and with everyone.

私はあの光の中にいたいと思います

And I know U.S.-China relations

あなた方や すべての人と共に—

doesn't need another lawyer.
