and raised in Ghana, West Africa.

私の生まれはスイスですが

Ghana felt safe to me as a child.

西アフリカのガーナで育ちました

I was free, I was happy.

幼少時はガーナは安全と思っていました

The early 70s

私は自由で 幸せでした

marked a time of musical and artistic excellence in Ghana.

70年代初頭は

But then by the end of the decade,

ガーナの芸術と音楽が栄えた時代です

the country had fallen back into political instability

しかし70年代が終わる頃には

and mismanagement.

ガーナは再び政情不安へと

In 1979,

逆戻りしてしまいました

I witnessed my first military coup.

1979年には

We the children had gathered at a friend's house.

初めて軍事クーデターを目撃しました

It was a dimly lit shack.

私たち子供は友人の家に集まりました

There was a beaten up black and white television

薄暗い掘っ立て小屋でした

flickering in the background,

年期の入った白黒テレビがあり

and a former head of state and general

ちらつく画面の中で

was being blindfolded

前国家元首の将軍は

and tied to the pole.

目隠しをされ

The firing squad aimed, fired --

ポールに縛り付けられました

the general was dead.

銃殺隊が照準を合せ 引き金を引き

Now this was being broadcast live.

将軍は死にました

And shortly after, we left the country,

これはライブ放送で中継されていました

and we returned to Switzerland.

その直後 私たちはガーナを去り

Now Europe came as a shock to me,

スイスへと戻りました

and I think I started feeling the need

さてヨーロッパには少し驚きました

to shed my skin in order to fit in.

「ここに馴染むには皮膚の色を変えなくては」

I wanted to blend in like a chameleon.

と考え始めました

I think it was a tactic of survival.

カメレオンみたいに同化したかったんです

And it worked, or so I believed.

生き残りを賭けた作戦だったんですかね

So here I was in 2008

ただこれは機能しました　そう思っています

wondering where I was in my life.

さて 2008年の私は

And I felt I was being typecast as an actor.

自分を見失いさまよっていました

I was always playing the exotic African.

型にはまった役者になりつつあると感じていました

I was playing the violent African,

私がいつも演じていたのはエキゾチックで

the African terrorist.

暴力的なアフリカ人

And I was thinking,

そうテロリストですね

how many terrorists could I possibly play

そこで思ったのです

before turning into one myself?

「こんなにテロリストばかり演じていたら

And I had become ashamed of the other,

本物のテロリストになってしまうのではないか」

the African in me.

アフリカ人としての私を

And fortunately I decided in 2008

恥じるようになりました

to return to Ghana,

幸いにも2008年に

after 28 years of absence.

ガーナに戻る決意をしました

I wanted to document on film

28年ぶりにですよ

the 2008 presidential elections.

2008年の大統領選挙を

And there, I started by searching

ドキュメンタリ映画にしようと思ったのです

for the footprints in my childhood.

そしてそこで 幼少時の足跡探しから

And before I even knew it,

取りかかりました

I was suddenly on a stage

するといつの間にか

surrounded by thousands of cheering people

政治集会のまっただ中

during a political rally.

路上で何千もの観衆に

And I realized that, when I'd left the country,

取り囲まれていました

free and fair elections in a democratic environment

そこで気づいたのは 私が国を去ったときは

were a dream.

自由で公平な民主的な選挙なんて

And now that I'd returned, that dream had become reality,

絵に描いたもちでした

though a fragile reality.

戻ってみると これが実現していたのです

And I was thinking,

脆いものでしたけどね

was Ghana searching for its identity

そこで考えました

like I was looking for my identity?

私が自分探しをしていたように

Was what was happening in Ghana a metaphor

ガーナもアイデンティティを探しているのか？

for what was happening in me?

ガーナで起こっていたことは

And it was as if through the standards of my Western life,

私に起こったことの隠喩なのか？

I hadn't lived up to my full potential.

西洋という器の中で私は今まで

I mean, nor had Ghana,

自分を出しきれていなかったのではないか

even though we had been trying very hard.

ガーナも私も 大変な努力を

Now in 1957,

していたにもかかわらずです

Ghana was the first sub-Saharan country

さて1957年当時

to gain its independence.

ガーナはサハラ以南で

In the late 50s,

初めて独立を果たした国です

Ghana and Singapore had the same GDP.

50年代後半

I mean, today, Singapore is a First World country

ガーナとシンガポールのGDPは同等でした

and Ghana is not.

今日ではシンガポールは先進工業国ですが

But maybe it was time to prove to myself,

ガーナは違います

yes, it's important to understand the past,

過去を理解し 異なる視点から

it is important to look at it in a different light,

見直すこともたしかに重要ですが

but maybe we should look at the strengths in our own culture

それよりも我々は自身の文化の長所を見つめ

and build on those foundations in the present.

それを基盤に今を生きるべきであると

So here I was, December 7th, 2008.

証明する時期がきているのだと思います

The polling stations opened to the voters at 7:00 AM,

時は2008年12月７日

but voters, eager to take their own political fate into their hands,

投票所は朝の７時に開きました　しかし有権者たちは

were starting to line up at 4:00 AM in the morning.

その手で政治的意思決定をする瞬間を待てずに

And they had traveled from near, they had traveled from far,

朝の４時から列をなしていました

because they wanted to make their voices heard.

近所からも遠方からも人が集まりました

And I asked one of the voters, I said, "Whom are you going to vote for?"

彼らの声を届けたかったからです

And he said, "I'm sorry, I can't tell you."

一人の投票者に聞きました「誰に投票するの？」

He said that his vote was in his heart.

「教えられないよ」と彼は答えました

And I understood, this was their election,

「投票は心の中にある」と付け加えました

and they weren't going to let anyone

そこで気づきました これが彼らの選挙なんだ

take it away from them.

他の何者にもこれを

Now the first round of the voting didn't bring forth a clear winner --

ゆだねるつもりはないんだ

so nobody had achieved the absolute majority --

さて第一回投票では絶対多数を

so voting went into a second round three weeks later.

獲得した者がおらず勝負はきまりませんでした

The candidates were back on the road; they were campaigning.

そこで３週間後に第二回投票が行われました

The rhetoric of the candidates, of course, changed.

候補者は路上にもどりキャンペーンをしました

The heat was on.

彼らのスピーチはもちろん変化しました

And then the cliche came to haunt us.

熱も入っていました

There were claims of intimidation

するとまたあの頃のガーナが戻ってきてしまいました

at the polling stations,

投票所では「脅された」

of ballot boxes being stolen.

「投票箱が盗まれた」などの

Inflated results started coming in

苦情が寄せられました

and the mob was starting to get out of control.

これに乗じて暴動は拡大し

We witnessed the eruption of violence in the streets.

暴徒たちは手に負えなくなり始めました

People were being beaten brutally.

路上で目の当たりにしたのは怒れ狂う暴力です

The army started firing their guns. People were scrambling.

ひどい仕打ちを受ける人もしました

It was complete chaos.

軍が発砲し 人々は逃げ回るという

And my heart sank,

全くの無秩序でした

because I thought, here we are again.

またこんな事態になったのかと

Here is another proof

私のこころは沈みました

that the African is not capable of governing himself.

再びアフリカの

And not only that, I am documenting it --

自己統治能力の欠如が証明されたからです

documenting my own cultural shortcomings.

しかも私自身の文化的欠点を

So when the echo of the gunshots

自らの手でカメラに収めていたのです

had lingered,

こだまする銃声の音を

it was soon drowned by the chanting of the mob,

すぐに包み込んだのは

and I didn't believe what I was hearing.

暴徒たちの歌声でした

They were chanting, "We want peace.

私は耳を疑いました

We want peace."

彼らは歌っていたのです

And I realized it had to come from the people.

「欲しいのは平和だ」

After all, they decide,

気づきました「彼らこそが主体なんだ」

and they did.

最後に決めるのは彼らです

So the sounds that were before distorted and loud,

その通りになりました

were suddenly a melody.

さっきまでのやかましい喧騒が

The sounds of the voices were harmonious.

突然メロディになったんです

So it could happen.

彼らの声はハーモニーを生み出しました

A democracy could be upheld peacefully.

こうして平和的手段で民主国家を

It could be, by the will of the masses

建国出来る可能性が見えてきました

who were now urgently pressing

強い意志と心を持って

with all their heart and all their will

平和を求める

for peace.

この大勢の人々がいれば

Now here's an interesting comparison.

これは実現できるんです

We in the West,

さておもしろい対比を紹介します

we preach the values,

わたしたち欧米諸国は

the golden light of democracy,

価値観や輝かしい民主制の

that we are the shining example of how it's done.

重要性を説き

But when it comes down to it,

自分達が光り輝く先駆者であると言っています

Ghana found itself in the same place

しかし ガーナは今回

in which the U.S. election stalled

2000年のブッシュ対ゴアの

in the 2000 presidential elections --

アメリカ合衆国の大統領選挙と

Bush versus Gore.

同じ状況に

But instead of the unwillingness of the candidates

置かれたにもかかわらず

to allow the system to proceed and the people to decide,

システムや国民が決定権を有することに

Ghana honored democracy

不満を持つ候補者はおらず

and its people.

ガーナは民主政治と

It didn't leave it up to the Supreme Court to decide;

国民を尊重しました

the people did.

決定を最高裁判所に任せたりはせず

Now the second round of voting

国民自身が決定を下したのです

did not bring forth a clear winner either.

さて第二回投票ですが またしても

I mean, it was so incredibly close.

勝者ははっきりしませんでした

The electoral commissioner declared,

本当に接戦だったのです

with the consent of the parties,

選挙委員会は両党の同意の下

to run an unprecedented

前例のない

second re-run.

第三回投票をすると

So the people went back to the polls

宣言をしました

to determine their own president,

人々は投票所に戻り 法律制度ではなく

not the legal system.

自分たち自身の

And guess what, it worked.

大統領を決定したのです

The defeated candidate

するとどうでしょう 上手く行ったのです

gave up power

敗れた候補者は

and made way for Ghana to move into a new democratic cycle.

権力を放棄し

I mean, at the absolute time

ガーナは新たな民主主義時代の輪に入ったのでした

for the absolute need of democracy,

絶対に民主制が必要な

they did not abuse their power.

まさにその時には

The belief in true democracy and in the people runs deep,

権力の乱用は見られませんでした

proving that the African is capable of governing himself.

真の民主制と国民への深い信念がアフリカに

Now the uphill battle for Ghana and for Africa

自己統治能力をもたらしたのです

is not over,

ガーナそしてアフリカの激動の戦いは

but I have proof that the other side of democracy exists,

まだ終わってはいません

and that we must not take it for granted.

異なる形の民主制が存在することは証明済みです

Now I have learned

そしてこれを当然と思ってはだめです

that my place is not just in the West or in Africa,

私は自分の居場所は

and I'm still searching

欧州とアフリカだけではないことを知りました

for my identity,

今でも自分の

but I saw Ghana

アイデンティティを探しています

create democracy better.

しかしガーナはよりよい

Ghana taught me

民主体制を作り出しました

to look at people differently

ガーナが教えてくれたこと

and to look at myself differently.

人々をそして自分を

And yes,

異なる観点から見つめるということです

we Africans can.
