with a bit of an unexpected background.

僕は現代美術アーティストですが

I was in my 20s before I ever went to an art museum.

生い立ちはちょっと変わっています

I grew up in the middle of nowhere

生まれて初めて美術館に行ったのは20代になってからで

on a dirt road in rural Arkansas,

育ったのは周りに何もなく

an hour from the nearest movie theater.

道路も未舗装のアーカンソーの田舎で

And I think it was a great place to grow up as an artist

一番近い映画館まで１時間でした

because I grew up around quirky, colorful characters

でも芸術家として育つにはいい環境だったと思います

who were great at making with their hands.

個性的で風変わり そして

And my childhood is more hick

手先が器用な人々の間で育ったからです

than I could ever possibly relate to you,

僕の子供時代は説明できないほど

and also more intellectual than you would ever expect.

田舎くさいものでした

For instance, me and my sister, when we were little,

同時に皆さんが思うよりずっと知的でした

we would compete to see who could eat the most squirrel brains.

例えば僕と妹は子供の頃

(Laughter)

リスの脳みそを食べる競争をしていました

But on the other side of that, though,

（笑）

we were big readers in our house.

でもその一方

And if the TV was on, we were watching a documentary.

僕の家族は読書家でした

And my dad is the most voracious reader I know.

そしてテレビと言えばドキュメンタリーでした

He can read a novel or two a day.

僕は父ほど熱心な読書家を見たことがありません

But when I was little, I remember,

１日に小説を１～２冊読めます

he would kill flies in our house with my BB gun.

でも小さかった頃の思い出は

And what was so amazing to me about that --

父が僕のBB ガンで家の中のハエを殺していたことです

well he would be in his recliner, would holler for me to fetch the BB gun,

何がすごいかと言うと

and I'd go get it.

リクライニングチェアから大声でBBガンをよこせと言い

And what was amazing to me --

僕が取ってくると

well it was pretty kickass; he was killing a fly in the house with a gun --

びっくりするのは―

but what was so amazing to me

家の中のハエをガンで殺すのはかなり凄いんですが

was that he knew just enough how to pump it.

何がすごいかと言うと

And he could shoot it from two rooms away

撃つ加減が分かっていて

and not damage what it was on

２部屋離れた所から撃って

because he knew how to pump it just enough to kill the fly

ハエがとまっていたものは傷つけないんです

and not damage what it landed on.

ハエを殺すのには十分で

So I should talk about art.

とまっていたものは傷つけない強さで撃てたからです

(Laughter)

でもとにかくアートの話をしましょう

Or we'll be here all day with my childhood stories.

（笑）

I love contemporary art,

子供の頃の話をしていたらきりがないので

but I'm often really frustrated with the contemporary art world

僕は現代美術が大好きですが

and the contemporary art scene.

この世界とこの環境に

A few years ago,

強く不満を感じることがよくあります

I spent months in Europe

数年前

to see the major international art exhibitions

何ヶ月かヨーロッパで過ごし

that have the pulse

有数の国際美術展を見ました

of what is supposed to be going on in the art world.

芸術界で今何が起こっているか

And I was struck

動向が分かるとされるものでした

by going to so many, one after the other,

そしていくつも続けて見に行って

with some clarity of what it was

衝撃を受けました

that I was longing for.

自分が何を求めているのか

And I was longing for several things that I wasn't getting,

頭の中ではっきりしたのです

or not getting enough of.

僕はそこには無いものや

But two of the main things:

十分に無いものを求めていました

one of it, I was longing for more work

でも主な２つとして

that was appealing to a broad public,

まず一般大衆に受ける

that was accessible.

身近な作品が

And the second thing that I was longing for

もっと欲しいと思いました

was some more exquisite craftsmanship

そしてもう１つ欲しいと思ったのは

and technique.

もっと精巧な技巧と

So I started thinking and listing

手法でした

what all it was that I thought would make a perfect biennial.

そこで完璧なビエンナーレには何が必要かと

So I decided,

考えて羅列し始めました

I'm going to start my own biennial.

そして自分のビエンナーレを

I'm going to organize it and direct it

やろうと決めました

and get it going in the world.

企画して指揮をして

So I thought, okay,

世界でやり始めようと思いました

I have to have some criteria of how to choose work.

それで作品を選抜する

So amongst all the criteria I have,

基準がいくつか要るなと思いました

there's two main things.

僕の中の基準には

One of them, I call my Mimaw's Test.

２つ重要なものがあります

And what that is

１つは｢婆ちゃんのテスト｣と

is I imagine explaining a work of art

僕が呼んでいるもので

to my grandmother in five minutes,

祖母に芸術作品の説明を

and if I can't explain it in five minutes,

５分でする想像をします

then it's too obtuse

５分で説明できなかったら

or esoteric

パッとしていないか

and it hasn't been refined enough yet.

難解すぎるかです

It needs to worked on

十分磨かれていないのです

until it can speak fluently.

さらりと説明できるまで

And then my other second set of rules --

取り組む必要があるということです

I hate to say "rules" because it's art --

そして２つ目の一連のルールは―

my criteria would be

芸術なので｢ルール｣はいやですね

the three H's,

僕の基準は

which is head, heart and hands.

３つのHです

And great art would have "head":

Head（頭）Heart（心）Hands（手）です

it would have interesting intellectual ideas

素晴らしい芸術作品には｢頭｣があり

and concepts.

興味深い知的なアイデアや

It would have "heart" in that it would have passion

概念を表現しています

and heart and soul.

それには｢心｣もあり 情熱や

And it would have "hand" in that it would be greatly crafted.

思いや魂が感じられます

So I started thinking about

そして｢手｣として巧妙に作成されています

how am I going to do this biennial,

それでこのビエンナーレを

how am I going to travel the world

どうやってやろうか

and find these artists?

どうやって世界を旅して芸術家を

And then I realized one day, there's an easier solution to this.

見つけようかと考え始めました

I'm just going to make the whole thing myself.

でもある日 もっと簡単な方法を思いつきました

(Laughter)

全部でっち上げればいいやと

And so this is what I did.

So I thought, a biennial needs artists.

それでそうしました

I'm going to do an international biennial; I need artists from all around the world.

ビエンナーレには芸術家が必要だ

So what I did was

国際ビエンナーレだから世界中の芸術家が要ると思いました

I invented a hundred artists from around the world.

それでどうしたかと言うと

I figured out their bios, their passions in life

世界中の100人の芸術家を捏造しました

and their art styles,

彼らの生い立ちや人生における情熱

and I started making their work.

芸術のスタイルなどを考え出して

(Laughter)

彼らの作品を創り始めました

(Applause)

I felt, oh this is the kind of project that I could spend my whole life doing.

So I decided, I'm going to make this a real biennial.

この手のプロジェクトはきりがないと思いました

It's going to be two years of studio work.

それで本当にビエンナーレにして

And I'm going to create this in two years,

アトリエで２年取り組んで

and I have.

２年で完成させようと決めました

So I should start to talk about these guys.

そしてその通りにしました

Well the range is quite a bit.

And I'm such a technician, so I loved this project,

getting to play with all the techniques.

So for example, in realist paintings,

it ranges from this,

which is kind of old masters style,

to really realistic still-life,

So now let me introduce some of my fictional artists to you.

This is Nell Remmel.

では僕の架空の芸術家を紹介したいと思います

Nell is interested in agricultural processes,

and her work is based in these practices.

This piece, which is called "Flipped Earth" --

she was interested in taking the sky

and using it to cleanse barren ground.

And by taking giant mirrors --

and here she's taking giant mirrors

and pulling them into the dirt.

And this is 22 feet long.

And what I loved about her work

is, when I would walk around it

and look down into the sky,

And probably the best part of this piece

but there's still the light above, bright above.

And so you're standing there and everything else is dark,

but there's this portal that you want to jump in.

This piece was great. This is in my parents' backyard in Arkansas.

And I love to dig a hole.

So this piece was great fun

because it was two days of digging in soft dirt.

The next artist is Kay Overstry,

and she's interested in ephemerality and transience.

And in her most recent project,

And what she did was she went out on a cold, dry night

So the next artist, this is a group of Japanese artists,

a collective of Japanese artists --

in Tokyo.

And they were interested in developing a new, alternative art space,

and they needed funding for it,

so they decided to come up with some interesting fundraising projects.

資金が必要で

One of these is scratch-off masterpieces.

面白い資金調達プロジェクトに取り組むことにしました

(Laughter)

その１つがスクラッチ式の名画です

And so what they're doing --

（笑）

each of these artists on a nine-by-seven-inch card,

それぞれのアーティストが

which they sell for 10 bucks,

23 ×18センチのカードに

they drew original works of art.

オリジナルの絵を描き

And you buy one, and maybe you get a real piece, and maybe not.

10ドルで売っています

Well this has sparked a craze in Japan,

買うまで本物かハズレか分からないわけです

because everyone's wanting a masterpiece.

それで日本ではブームを巻き起こしました

And the ones that are the most sought after

みんなが名画を欲しがったからです

are the ones that are only barely scratched off.

一番価値があるのは

And all these works, in some way,

ほとんどスクラッチされていないものです

talk about luck or fate or chance.

作品は全部なんらかの形で

Those first two

幸運や運命や偶然について表現しています

are portraits of mega-jackpot winners years before and after their win.

最初の２つはジャンボ宝くじ当選者の

And in this one it's called "Drawing the Short Stick."

数年前と当選後の肖像画です

I love this piece because I have a little cousin at home

（笑）

who introduced me -- which I think is such a great introduction --

to a friend one day as, "This is my cousin Shea.

従弟がある日友達に僕のことをすごくいい言い方で

He draws sticks real good."

紹介してくれたからです　｢僕の従兄弟のシェイだよ

(Laughter)

棒の絵がすっごく上手いんだから｣

Which is one of the best compliments ever.

（笑）

This artist is Gus Weinmueller,

今までで一番の褒め言葉のひとつでした

and he's doing a project, a large project, called "Art for the Peoples."

この芸術家はガス・ワインミュラーで

And within this project, he's doing a smaller project

｢人々の芸術｣という大きなプロジェクトをしています

called "Artists in Residence."

この中で｢アーティスト・イン・レジデンス｣と題して

And what he does is --

小さな作品も作っています

(Laughter)

何をするかと言うと

he spends a week at a time with a family.

（笑）

And he shows up on their porch, their doorstep,

誰かの家で１週間過ごします

with a toothbrush and pajamas,

その家の玄関先や戸口にパジャマと

and he's ready to spend the week with them.

歯ブラシを持ってやってきます

And using only what's present,

１週間共に過ごす準備は万端です

he goes in and makes a little abode studio to work out of.

そしてそこにあるものだけを使って

And he spends that week talking to the family

作業用のささやかな住み込みアトリエを作ります

about what do they think great art is.

その１週間は偉大な芸術とは何か

He has all these discussions with their family,

家族と話し合います

and he digs through everything they have,

いろいろ話し合って

and he finds materials to make work.

彼らの所有物を全部かき分けて

And he makes a work

作品を作る材料を見つけます

that answers what they think great art is.

そして家族が素晴らしいと思える

For this family, he made this still-life painting.

芸術作品を作るのです

And whatever he makes

somehow references nesting and space

and personal property.

This next project,

this is by Jaochim Parisvega,

次のプロジェクトは

and he's interested in --

ワキン・パリスヴェガのものです

he believes art is everywhere waiting --

that it just needs a little bit of a push to happen.

And he provides this push by harnessing natural forces,

like in his series where he used rain to make paintings.

This project is called "Love Nests."

What he did was to get wild birds to make his art for him.

So he put the material in places where the birds were going to collect them,
