We know we have China to thank for introducing tea to the Western world.

ご存知の通り、西洋世界にお茶の文化をもたらした国は中国です、中国よ、ありがとう～って感じですね。

But how did it make its way to England

でも、どうやってイギリスに持ち込まれたのでしょうか、

and become the cultural obsession it is today?

そしてどのようにして今日のようなイングリッシュティーの文化が根付いたのでしょう？

Well, that's all thanks to one Portuguese woman.

実は一人のポルトガル人の女性と関係があったのです。

The year, 1662.

1662年のこと

The person, Catherine of Braganza.

Catherine of Braganza（キャサリン・オブ・ブラガンザ）という人がいました、

She had just won the hand of England's King Charles II

彼女は英国王のチャールズ2世と政略結婚をし

with the help of a very large dowry

たくさんの持参金を手に入れました

including money, treasures, and spices.

その中には、お金はもちろん、宝物やスパイスも含まれました。

This worthwhile trade made her the Queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland.

この価値のある取引によって彼女はイングランドとスコットランドとアイルランドの女王になりました。

When she arrived to her new homeland,

彼女が新しい母国に降り立った時、

she brought with her packets of loose leaf tea

彼女は小包のルーズリーフティーを持ち込みました

in crates labeled Transporte de Ervas Aromaticas.

木枠には Transporte de Ervas Aromaticasというラベルが貼られていました。

It's a theory that this was later abbreviated to T-E-A, tea.

これがTEAと略して書かれるようになった由来です。

Now tea could already be found in England

今やイギリスではお茶は容易に嗜まれていますが

but was only really used for medicinal purposes.

当時は高級なモノで、医療目的でのみ用いられていました。

Catherine continued drinking tea to her heart's content.

しかしお金持ちだった彼女は心行くまでお茶を嗜んでいました。

Another thing Catherine brought to the table from Portugal was the idea of tea drinking experience.

彼女がポルトガルから持ってきた別のテーブルマナーは紅茶を飲む習慣でした。

She popularized the use of porcelain teacups and mugs.

磁器のティーカップとマグを使うことを大衆化させました。

By the end of the 17th century,

17世紀末になると、

much of British aristocracy were enjoying the hot beverage.

多くの英国貴族がこの暖かい飲み物を嗜むようになりました。
