I'm Jon M. Chu. And I'm not a dancer,

I'm not a choreographer -- I'm actually a filmmaker, a storyteller.

I directed a movie two years ago

振り付け師でもありません 映画監督 ストーリーテラーです

called "Step Up 2: The Streets."

『ステップアップ２ ザ・ストリート』 という映画を

Anybody? Anybody? Yeah!

２年前に撮ったんですが

During that movie I got to meet a ton of hip-hop dancers --

ねぇ 見た？ 見た？ イェーイ！

amazing, the best in the world --

撮影でたくさんの ヒップホップダンサーに出会いました

and they brought me into a society, the sort of underground

世界最高の踊り手たちです

street culture that blew my mind.

彼らに導かれてアングラの ストリート・カルチャーに触れ

I mean, this is literally human beings

圧倒されました

with super-human strength and abilities.

本当に超人的な力と能力を

They could fly in the air. They could bend their elbow all the way back.

持った人たちなんです

They could spin on their heads for 80 times in a row.

宙を飛び 肘を反対向きに曲げ

I'd never seen anything like that.

頭で立て続けに 80回も回るんです

When I was growing up, my heroes were people like

そんなの見たことが ありませんでした

Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Michael Jackson.

私が育った頃の ヒーローと言えば

I grew up in a musical family.

フレッド・アステアに ジーン・ケリーに マイケル・ジャクソンでした

(Laughter)

ミュージカル好きの 一家だったんです

And those guys, those were like, ultimate heroes.

(笑)

Being a shy, little, skinny Asian kid growing up in the Silicon Valley

彼らは究極のヒーローでした

with low self-esteem, those guys made me believe in something bigger.

シリコンバレーに育った 自尊心の低い チビで内気なアジア系の子供に

Those guys made me want to, like, "I'm going to do that

大いなるものを 信じさせてくれました

moonwalk at that bar mitzvah tonight for that girl."

彼らは私に こう思わせたのです

And it seems like those dance heroes have disappeared,

sort of relegated to the background of pop stars and music videos.

その後 あのダンスのヒーローたちは 消えてしまったかのようでした

But after seeing what I've seen,

すっかりポップスターや ミュージックビデオの陰に追いやられて

the truth is, they have not disappeared at all.

しかし私が目にしたものは 教えてくれました

They're here, getting better and better every day.

彼らは全然 消え失せてなんかいなかった

And dance has progressed.

彼らは健在で 日々上達しています

It is insane what dance is right now.

ダンス自体 進歩してるんです

Dance has never had a better friend than technology.

現在のダンスは もうブッ飛んでいます

Online videos and social networking ...

テクノロジーはダンスの 最高の友達です

dancers have created a whole global laboratory online

オンラインビデオに ソーシャルネットワーク

for dance, where kids in Japan are taking moves

ダンサーたちは 全世界的な ダンスの実験場を手にしました

from a YouTube video created in Detroit,

日本の若者が デトロイトで作られた

building on it within days and releasing a new video,

YouTube ビデオから 動きを学び取り

while teenagers in California are taking the Japanese video and remixing it

数日のうちに その上に 新たなものを付け加えて公開し

with a Philly flair to create a whole new dance style in itself.

カリフォルニアのティーンが それをフィリー・フレアとリミックスして

And this is happening every day.

まったく新しいダンススタイルを 作るという具合です

And from these bedrooms and living rooms and garages,

そんなことが 毎日起きているんです

with cheap webcams,

そんな子供部屋や リビングルームや ガレージから

lies the world's great dancers of tomorrow.

安いウェブカムを使って

Our Fred Astaires, our Gene Kellys

明日の偉大な世界的ダンサーたちが 生まれています

our Michael Jacksons are right at our fingertips,

我々のフレッド・アステアに ジーン・ケリーに

and may not have that opportunity, except for us.

マイケル・ジャクソンたちが すぐ手の届くところにいます

So, we created the LXD,

他の人はそんな機会に 恵まれていないかもしれません

sort of a -- the Legion of Extraordinary Dancers,

だからLXDを作りました

a justice league of dancers that believe

that dance can have a transformative effect on the world.

A living, breathing comic book series,

but unlike Spiderman and Iron Man,

these guys can actually do it.

And we're going to show you some today. So, let me introduce to you,

I get a lot of different reactions actually.

Sometimes you would think that maybe kids would enjoy it,

but sometimes they get a little freaked out.

And, I don't know, I kind of get a kick out of that a little bit.

J Smooth: When I'm in the zone -- I'm dancing and free styling it --

I actually visually kind of picture

lines, and moving them.

I think of like, Transformers,

それを動かしているんだ

like how panels open and then they fold,

トランスフォーマーみたいなのを 想像している

they fold in, and then you close that panel.

パネルがこう開き 折りたたんで

And then another thing opens,

内側にしまって パネルを閉じる

you close that.

それからまた 別なのが開き

そして閉じる

Kid David: It's kind of like, honestly a lot of times

I don't really know what's going on

when I'm dancing.

正直どうなってんのか

Because at that point it's just really like, it's my body and the music.

わかんないことが多いよ

It's not really a conscious decision,

やってるときは本当に 自分の体と音楽だけになる

"I'm going to do this next, I'm going to do this."

「次にこれをやって あれをやって」と

It's kind of like this other level

意識して考えてるわけじゃねえ

where you can't make choices anymore,

別のレベルに行っていて

and it's just your body reacting to certain sounds in the music.

もう選んでなんていられない

I got my name just because I was so young.

ただ体が 音楽の中の音に 反応するんだ

I was young when I started. I was younger than a lot of the people I was dancing with.

俺の名前は 子供だからって付いたんだ

So, it was always like, they called me Kid David, because I was the kid.

始めた頃はまだガキでさ 一緒に踊ってる人はみんな年上だった

(Music)

それでいつもみんな俺のこと キッド・ デイビッドって呼んだんだ ガキだから

L'il C: I tell them to create a ball,

and then you just use that ball of energy.

And instead of throwing it out, people would think

that's a krump move, that's a krump move.

That's not a krump move. You're going to throw it out,

あれはクランプの 動きだって思う

you throw it out, and you hold it.

でもクランプじゃねえ 投げ出すんだ

And you let it go, and then right when you see the tail,

投げ出して それから持ちこたえる

you grab it by the tail, then you bring it back in.

放してやり それから尻尾を見た瞬間に

And you just got this piece of energy

捕まえて 引き戻す

and you just, you're manipulating it.

そしてこのエネルギーの 塊をつかみ

You know, you create power, then you tame it.

それを操るんだ
