確か２年生の時だったと思います

I was sent straight away to my school principal,

ミケランジェロのヌード胸像を描いた事で

and my school principal, a sweet nun,

すぐに校長先生に呼び出されました

looked at my book with disgust,

校長先生は 心優しい修道女だったんですが

flipped through the pages, saw all the nudes --

眉をひそめながら スケッチブックを開き

you know, I'd been seeing my mother draw nudes and I'd copy her --

全てのヌード画を見ました

and the nun slapped me on my face and said,

母が描いてたのを見て 真似したんですが

"Sweet Jesus, this kid has already begun."

先生は私の顔をひっぱたいて 言いました

I had no clue what she was talking about,

「神よ この子はもう始めてしまいました」

but it was convincing enough for me never to draw again

何のことを言っているのか

until the ninth grade.

サッパリ分かりませんでしたが もう二度と描かないでおこうとは思いましたね

Thanks to a really boring lecture,

でも 中学３年生になったら

I started caricaturing my teachers in school.

授業がとても退屈だったので

And, you know, I got a lot of popularity.

今度は学校の先生達の 似顔絵を描き始め

I don't play sports. I'm really bad at sports.

クラスで大評判になりました

I don't have the fanciest gadgets at home.

運動神経が悪く スポーツはしない

I'm not on top of the class.

家がお金持ちなわけでもない

So for me, cartooning gave me a sense of identity.

クラストップの成績でもない

I got popular, but I was scared I'd get caught again.

そんな私でも 漫画なら 自分の存在をアピールできる

So what I did was I quickly put together

人気者になりましたが 先生に怒られたくなかったので

a collage of all the teachers I had drawn,

描いた絵を全部

glorified my school principal, put him right on top,

さっと寄せ集めて コラージュにしました

and gifted it to him.

敬意を表して 校長先生を一番上にして

He had a good laugh at the other teachers

校長室に持って行ったら

and put it up on the notice board.

校長は他の先生達のことを大笑いして

(Laughter)

その絵を掲示板に貼り出したんです

This is a part of that.

（笑）

And I became a school hero.

これはその一部です

All my seniors knew me. I felt really special.

私は学校のヒーローになりました

I have to tell you a little bit about my family.

皆が私の事を知っていて 特別な存在になった気分でした

That's my mother. I love her to bits.

家族の話もしましょう

She's the one who taught me how to draw and, more importantly, how to love.

これは母です 母のことは大好きで

She's a bit of a hippie.

描き方 さらに愛し方も 教えてくれました

She said, "Don't say that," but I'm saying it anyway.

ヒッピーみたいですね

The rest of my family are boring academics,

「そんなこと言わないで」って 言われてたけど

busy collecting Ivy League decals for our classic Ambassador car.

兄弟達は皆 つまらない秀才で 名門校の

My father's a little different.

ステッカーを集めては うちのインド車に貼っています

My father believed in a holistic approach to living,

父は少し変わってます

and, you know, every time he taught us,

人生における全体論的アプローチを 信条としていて

he'd say, "I hate these books,

いつも私たちには

because these books are hijacked by Industrial Revolution."

「こんな本は嫌いだ

While he still held that worldview, I was 16,

産業革命に汚染されている」 と言っていました

I got the best lawyer in town,

まだ父がその世界観を抱いていた時 私は16歳で

my older brother Karthik,

街で一番の弁護士である

and I sat him down, and I said, "Pa,

カーシック兄さんを後ろ盾にし

from today onwards I've decided

父を席につかせて こう言いました

I'm going to be disciplined,

「パパ、今日からは

I'm going to be curious,

規律を守り

I'm going to learn something new every day,

好奇心を持ち

I'm going to be very hard working,

毎日新しい事を学んでいきます

and I'm not going to depend on you

一生懸命やるし

emotionally or financially."

頼らないようにします

And he was very impressed. He was all tearing up. Ready to hug me.

精神的にも 経済的にも」

And I said, "Hold that thought."

父はえらく感動して 涙ぐんで抱きしめようとしたので

I said, "Can I quit school then?"

「ちょっと待って －

But, to cut a long story short,

だから学校をやめてもいい？」 と言いました

I quit school to pursue a career as a cartoonist.

手短に言うと

I must have done about 30,000 caricatures.

漫画家になるために学校を辞めたんです 【第一の姿　漫画家】

I would do birthday parties, weddings, divorces,

３万点程の風刺画を描きました 【第一の姿　漫画家】

anything for anyone who wanted to use my services.

誕生日パーティー、結婚式、離婚など

But, most importantly, while I was traveling,

仕事はどんなものでも 誰からでも受けました

I taught children cartooning,

しかし決して忘れてならないのは 旅をしながら

and in exchange, I learned how to be spontaneous.

子ども達に漫画の描き方を教え

And mad and crazy and fun.

その代わりに 率直に怒ったり

When I started teaching them, I said let me start doing this professionally.

夢中になったり 楽しむということを 学んだことです

When I was 18 I started my own school.

彼らに教え始めた頃 これを仕事にしようと

However, an 18 year-old trying to start a school

18歳の時に学校を開きました

is not easy unless you have a big patron

でも 18歳で学校経営とは 有力なパトロンや

or a big supporter.

スポンサーがいないと

So I was flipping through the pages of the Times of India

難しいですよね

when I saw that the Prime Minister of India

ある日 インド版タイム誌を パラパラめくっていて

was visiting my home town, Bangalore.

首相が 私のいるバンガロールに

And, you know, just like how

来ていると知りました

every cartoonist knows Bush here,

それって 例えば

and if you had to meet Bush,

ここでは どの漫画家でも

it would be the funnest thing because

ブッシュ元大統領に会いたい

his face was a cartoonist's delight.

決まってるでしょう　だって

I had to meet my Prime Minister.

あの顔を描くのは最高だから

I went to the place where

私はどうしても首相に会いたくて

his helicopter was about to land.

ヘリコプターが着陸する頃に

I saw layers of security.

その場所に行くと 警備員が

I caricatured my way through three layers

何重にも配置されていました

by just impressing the guards,

３番目のガードまでは 警備員を笑わせながら

but I got stuck. I got stuck at the third.

風刺画を描いて 進めましたが

And what happened was, to my luck,

ついに 止められてしまいました

I saw a nuclear scientist

でも ラッキーな事が起きたんです

at whose party I had done cartoons.

以前 パーティーで絵を描いた

I ran up to him, and said, "Hello, sir. How do you do?"

原子力専門家を見つけたので

He said, "What are you doing here, Raghava?"

「お久しぶりです」 と声をかけたら

I said, "I'm here to meet the Prime Minister."

「ここで何をしているんだい」 と言うので

He said, "Oh, so am I."

「首相に会いに来たんです」 と答えると

I hopped into his car, and off we went

彼は「私もだよ」と言いました

through the remaining layers of security.

そこで私は彼の車に乗り込み

(Applause)

残りの警備の列を 難なく突破したんです

I sat him down, I caricatured him,

and since then I've caricatured hundreds of celebrities.

This is one I remember fondly.

because I altered the map of New York, if you notice.

I was hesitant to include this in my presentation

少しシリアスなので

because this cartoon was published

お見せしていいか迷いましたが

soon after 9/11.

これは9・11のすぐ後に

What was, for me, a very naive observation,

出されたものです

turned out to be a disaster.

私にとっては 単なる純粋な表現でしたが

That evening, I came home to hundreds of hate mails,

災いを招きました

hundreds of people telling me how they

その夜 帰宅すると 何百もの抗議メールが届いていて

could have lived another day without seeing this.

何百もの人に こんなものは

I was also asked to leave the organization,

見たくないと言われました

a cartoonists' organization in America,

頼みの綱だった

that for me was my lifeline.

アメリカにある漫画協会からは

That's when I realized, you know, cartoons are really powerful,

退会を求められました

art comes with responsibility.

漫画の絶大な力に 気づかされました

Anyway, what I did was I decided

芸術には責任が伴うということも

that I need to take a break.

とにかく 休みが必要だと思い

I quit my job at the papers, I closed my school,

休む事に決めました

and I wrapped up my pencils and my brushes and inks,

新聞の仕事を辞めて 学校も閉め

and I decided to go traveling.

ペンとブラシとインクを持って

When I went traveling, I remember,

旅に出ることにしました

I met this fabulous old man,

この旅で 一番の思い出は

who I met when I was caricaturing,

ある素晴らしい１人の老人です

who turned out to be an artist, in Italy.

イタリアで描いていた時に出会い

He invited me to his studio. He said, "Come and visit."

アーティストだと知りました

When I went, I saw the ghastliest thing ever.

彼のスタジオに招待され 行ってみると

I saw this dead, naked effigy of himself

それまで見た事もない不気味なものが 目に止まりました

hanging from the ceiling.

彼自身の裸の彫刻が 死体のように

I said, "Oh, my God. What is that?"

天井から吊るされていたんです

And I asked him, and he said,

「あれは一体なんですか？」

"Oh, that thing? In the night, I die.

尋ねると 彼は

In the morning, I am born again."

「あぁ あれ？ 私は夜になると死んで

I thought he was koo koo,

朝にはまた生まれ変わるんだよ」 と言うんです

but something about that really stuck.

イカれた人なんじゃないかと

I loved it. I thought there was something really beautiful about that.

思いましたが 心に残りました

So I said, "I am dead, so I need to be born again."

何かとても素晴らしい 気に入りました

So, I wanted to be a painter like him,

「私は死んでる また生まれなければ」

except, I don't know how to paint.

彼のような画家になりたいと思いました 【第二の姿　画家】

So, I tried going to the art store.

でも 描き方はわかりません 【第二の姿　画家】

You know, there are a hundred types of brushes.

画材店にも行ってみましたが

Forget it, they will confuse you

何百種類もの絵筆があって

even if you know how to draw.

描き方を知ってても 選べないみたいで

So I decided, I'm going to learn to paint by myself.

あきらめることにしました

I'm going to show you a very quick clip

独学で学ぶ事にしたんです

to show you how I painted and a little bit

私がどんな風に描いたか

about my city, Bangalore.

ちょっとしたクリップがあります

(Music)

故郷のバンガロールです

They had to be larger than life.

（音楽）

Everything had to be larger. The next painting was even bigger.

これらは実物よりも大きく

And even bigger.

何もかもが大きく 次の絵はもっと大きく

And for me it was, I had to dance while I painted.

さらに大きくなりました

It was so exciting.

描きながら踊り

Except, I even started painting dancers.

とても面白かったです

Here for example is a Flamenco dancer,

しかし ダンサーを描き始めると －

except there was one problem.

これはフラメンコダンサーですが

I didn't know the dance form, so I started following them,

問題が出てきました

and I made some money,

私は踊り方を知らなかったので 彼らについていきました

sold my paintings and would rush off

絵を売って お金を工面し

to France or Spain and work with them.

フランスやスペインへ飛んでは

That's Pepe Linares, the renowned Flamenco singer.

彼らと一緒に仕事をしました

But I had one problem, my paintings never danced.

有名なフラメンコ歌手の ぺぺ・リナレスですね

As much energy as I put into them

問題とは 私の絵が 一度も踊らなかったこと

while making them, they never danced.

描きながら どんなに私のエネルギーを

So I decided -- I had this crazy epiphany at two in the morning.

注ぎ込もうとも 一度も踊りませんでした

I called my friends, painted on their bodies,

ちょっとふざけた事をひらめいたのは 深夜２時です

and had them dance in front of a painting.

友人を呼び出して 身体に絵の具を塗り

And, all of a sudden, my paintings came alive.

絵の前で踊ってもらったんです

And then I was fortunate enough

すると 突然 絵に命が吹き込まれました

to actually perform this in California with Velocity Circus.

幸運にも そのパフォーマンスを

And I sat like you guys there in the audience.

カリフォルニアで ベロシティ・サーカスと一緒にでき

And I saw my work come alive.

皆さんのように座って 観客席から見ていると

You know, normally you work in isolation,

自分の作品に 生命が吹き込まれていきました

and you show at a gallery,

普通は 一人で描いて

but here, the work was coming alive,

ギャラリーで見せるのですが

and it had some other artists working with me.

ここでは 作品が生きていました

The collaborative effort was fabulous.

他のアーティストともコラボし

I said, I'm going to collaborate with anybody and everybody I meet.

素晴らしい作品になりました

I started doing fashion.

出会った人とは 誰とでもコラボすると言い

This is a fashion show we held in London.

まずはファッションから始めました

The best collaboration, of course, is with children.

ロンドンでファッションショーもやりました

They are ruthless, they are honest,

一番のコラボは もちろん 子ども達とのものです

but they're full of energy and fun.

彼らは残酷で 正直で エネルギッシュで

This is a work, a library I designed for the Robin Hood Foundation.

最高なんです

And I must say, I spent time in the Bronx

ロビンフッド財団が再生支援する図書館を デザインしたこともあります

working with these kids.

ブロンクスでも 子ども達と

And, in exchange for me working with them,

一緒に作品を作りました

they taught me how to be cool.

子ども達からは いかにして

I don't think I've succeeded, but they've taught me.

クールに振る舞うかを 教えられました

They said, "Stop saying sorry. Say, my bad."

クールには見えないと 思いますが

(Laughter)

彼らいわく － 「すみません」じゃなくて「悪ぃ」だぜ

Then I said, all this is good,

but I want to paint like a real painter.

万事順調ではありましたが 【第三の姿　現実を知る】

American education is so expensive.

やはり本物の画家の様に 描きたいと思っていました 【第三の姿　現実を知る】

I was in India, and I was walking down the streets,

でも アメリカでの学費は高いんです

and I saw a billboard painter.

インドで道を歩いていたら

And these guys paint humongous paintings,

看板塗装工を見かけました

and they look really good.

彼らはとてつもなく巨大な絵を 描いていました

And I wondered how they did it from so close.

とっても上手でした

So, one day I had the opportunity to meet one of these guys,

あんな至近距離からどうやって描くんだろう？と 不思議でした

and I said, "How do you paint like that? Who taught you?"

ある日 彼らの１人と知り合う機会があり

And he said, "Oh, it's very easy. I can teach you,

「どうやって描いてるの？誰に教わったの？」と 聞くと

but we're leaving the city,

「とても簡単だよ 教えてあげたいけど

because billboard painters are a dying,

もうすぐこの街を出て行くんだ

extinct bunch of artists,

看板塗装の仕事が 無くなってきてるだろ

because digital printing has totally replaced them and hijacked them."

アーティストは絶滅寸前さ

I said, in exchange for education in how to paint,

今はデジタル印刷が主流だからね」 と言われました

I will support them, and I started a company.

私は絵の描き方を教えてもらう代わりに

And since then, I've been painting all over the place.

彼らをサポートすると約束し 会社を立ち上げました

This is a painting I did of my wife in my apartment.

それからというもの 色んな場で描いてきました

This is another painting.

これは私がアパートの壁に描いた 妻の絵です

And, in fact, I started painting on anything,

これはまた別のもの

and started sending them around town.

Since I mentioned my wife, the most important collaboration

それを街中に送り出しました

has been with her, Netra.

妻についての話が出たので 妻のネトラとの

Netra and I met when she was 18.

最も重要なコラボをお話します

I must have been 19 and a half then,

彼女が18歳の時に出会いました

and it was love at first sight.

私が19歳の頃です

I lived in India. She lived in America.

一目惚れでした

She'd come every two months to visit me,

インドとアメリカで遠距離恋愛でした

and then I said I'm the man,

彼女は２ヶ月毎に 私に会いに来てくれました

I'm the man, and I have to reciprocate.

そこで 「僕は男だ

I have to travel seven oceans, and I have to come and see you.

男なんだから僕が往復する」 と言いました

I did that twice, and I went broke.

「７つの海を越えてキミに会いに行くよ」と

So then I said, "Nets, what do I do?"

２回往復して 一文無しになりました

She said, "Why don't you send me your paintings?

「ネッツ、どうしよう？」 と私が言うと

My dad knows a bunch of rich guys.

彼女は 「アナタの絵を送ってくれない？

We'll try and con them into buying it,

父の友人にはお金持ちが多いから

and then..."

なんとか言いくるめてみたら

But it turned out, after I sent the works to her,

買うんじゃないかしら・・・」

that her dad's friends,

実際に彼女に絵を送ってみて 分かったのは

like most of you, are geeks.

彼女のお父さんの友達は 本当に

I'm joking.

皆さんのように 変人だったんです

(Laughter)

冗談ですよ

No, they were really big geeks,

（笑）

and they didn't know much about art.

いや 彼らは本当に 偉大な変人でした

So Netra was stuck with 30 paintings of mine.

彼らは芸術については あまり詳しくなく

So what we did was we rented a little van

ネトラは30点もの 私の描いた絵を

and we drove all over the east coast trying to sell it.

レンタカーの小さなワゴン車に載せ

She contacted anyone and everyone

絵を売ろうと東海岸を走り回りました
