思いやり

Come with me to 915 South Bloodworth Street

思いやりとはどういう姿でしょうか？

in Raleigh, North Carolina, where I grew up.

ノースカロライナ州ラレイの サウスブラッドワース通り915番地にある

If you come in you will see us: evening time,

私が生まれ育った家では

at table -- set for ten but not always all seats filled --

夕食時 食卓には家族全員 10人分の 食事が用意されていましたが

at the point when dinner is ready to be served.

夕食の準備ができ 食べ始める時に

Since mom had eight kids,

常に10人全員が揃っているというわけでは ありませんでした

sometimes she said she couldn't tell who was who and where they were.

子供が8人いた母は

Before we could eat, she would ask,

時々 子供たちを見分けたり それぞれの居場所を把握できなかったので

"Are all the children in?"

食事の前に 母はこう尋ねていました

And if someone happened to be missing,

「みんな揃ってる？」

we would have to, we say, "Fix a plate" for that person, put it in the oven,

もし誰かがいない場合 子供たちはその場にいない兄弟のために

then we could say grace, and we could eat.

「食事をとっておこう」と言って オーブンにいれてあげていました

Also, while we were at the table,

それを終えてようやく 食前のお祈りをして 食べ始めることができたのです

there was a ritual in our family:

また 食事中

when something significant had happened for any one of us --

私たち家族には決まりごとがありました

whether mom had just been elected as the president of the PTA,

家族の誰かに何か特別なことがあったら

or whether dad had gotten an assignment at the college of our denomination,

例えば母がPTAで委員長に選ばれる とか

or whether someone had won the jabberwocky contest for talent --

父が私たちの宗派の 大学での仕事に呼ばれる とか

the ritual at the family was, once the announcement is made,

兄弟の誰かが 詩の朗読コンテストで優勝したなど

we must take five, ten minutes to do what we call "make over" that person --

そういった発表があったとき 私たちはその対象者のために

that is, to make a fuss over the one who had been honored in some way.

5-10分かけて いわゆる「ほめ直し」を しないといけないといけませんでした

For when one is honored, all are honored.

私たちはあの手この手で とにかく褒めちぎりました

Also, we had to make a report on our extended "visited" members,

誰か一人の名誉は 全員の名誉だったからです

that is, extended members of the family,

また 親戚訪問の報告も しないといけませんでした

sick and elderly, shut in.

病気を患い 年を取って

My task was, at least once a week, to visit Mother Lassiter

家に閉じこもりがちな親戚を 訪問していたんです

who lived on East Street,

私の任務は最低週に一回

Mother Williamson who lived on Bledsoe Avenue,

and Mother Lathers who lived on Oberlin Road.

Why? Because they were old and infirm,

and we needed to go by to see if they needed anything.

For mom said, "To be family, is to care and share and to look out for one another.

They are our family."

And, of course, sometimes there was a bonus for going.

They would offer sweets or money.

Mom says, "If they ask you what it costs to either go shopping for them,

you must always say, 'Nothing.'

This was the nature of being at that table.

In fact, she indicated that if we would do that,

食卓ではこういった会話が普通でした

not only would we have the joy of receiving the gratitude

実際 母は 私たちが親戚を手助けすることで

from the members of the extended family,

親戚から感謝される喜びを味わえるのだ

but she said, "Even God will smile, and when God smiles,

ということだけでなく

there is peace, and justice, and joy."

そういった時には神も微笑むし 神が微笑むとき

So, at the table at 915, I learned something about compassion.

平和や正義や喜びがそこにあるのだ ということを知ってほしかったのだと思います

Of course, it was a minister's family,

こうして 915番地の食卓で 私は思いやりについて学びました

so we had to add God into it.

牧師の家庭だったので

And so, I came to think that mama eternal, mama eternal,

神の助けもあったと 付け加えないといけませんね

is always wondering: Are all the children in?

そうして私は こう考えるようになりました

And if we had been faithful in caring and sharing,

永遠なる母は常に「子供たちは みんな揃ってる？」 と気にかけていると

we had the sense that justice and peace would have a chance in the world.

もし私たちが教えに忠実に 互いに助け合い 分かち合い続けたら

Now, it was not always wonderful at that table.

世界には正義と平和があるのだと 感じられるのです

Let me explain a point at which we did not rise to the occasion.

とは言え 食事の時間が いつも素晴らしかった訳じゃありません

It was Christmas, and at our family, oh, what a morning.

私たちがうまく対処できなかったときのことを お話させてください

Christmas morning, where we open up our gifts,

クリスマスの時のことです 私たち家族はクリスマスの朝は

where we have special prayers, and where we get to the old upright piano

クリスマスギフトを開けて

and we would sing carols. It was a very intimate moment.

In fact, you could come down to the tree to get your gifts and get ready to sing,

and then get ready for breakfast without even taking a bath or getting dressed,

except that daddy messed it up.

There was a member of his staff who did not have any place

父が台無しにしなければとても良い時間でした

on that particular Christmas to celebrate.

父の同僚の中に一人

And daddy brought Elder Revels to the Christmas family celebration.

クリスマスなのに 特にお祝いに訪れる場所もない人がいたんです

We thought he must be out of his mind.

それで父は その年老いたラベルさんを 家族のクリスマス会に連れてきたんです

This is our time. This is intimate time.

私たちは 父はどうかしていると思いました

This is when we can just be who we are,

and now we have this stuffy brother

with his shirt and tie on, while we are still in our PJs.

Why would daddy bring Elder Revels?

Any other time, but not to the Christmas celebration.

And mom overheard us and said,

"Well, you know what? If you really understand the nature of this celebration,

母は私たちがそう言ったのを耳にして

it is that this is a time where you extend the circle of love.

「クリスマスをお祝いする 本当の意味がわかる？

That's what the celebration is all about.

それはね 愛の輪を広げる大切なときっていうことなの

It's time to make space, to share the enjoyment of life in a beloved community."

それがクリスマスをお祝いする本当の理由なの

So, we sucked up.

最愛の人たちの間に他の人が入る余裕を作って 人生の楽しさを分かち合うときなの」と言いました

(Laughter)

そして 私たちは行儀よくすることにしました

But growing up at 915, compassion was not a word to be debated;

（笑）

it was a sensibility to how we are together.

でも 915番地で育んだ 思いやりは これから議論される思いやりとは違っていて

We are sisters and brothers united together.

And, like Chief Seattle said, "We did not spin the web of life.

We're all strands in it.

Now that's compassion.

So, let me tell you, I kind of look at the world this way.

I see pictures, and something says, "Now, that's compassion."

A harvested field of grain, with some grain in the corners,

reminding me of the Hebrew tradition

that you may indeed harvest,

but you must always leave some on the edges,

just in case there's someone who has not

had the share necessary for good nurture.

Talk about a picture of compassion.

I see -- always, it stirs my heart --

a picture of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

and maybe Thich Nhat Hanh and some of the other saints assembled,

that day, everybody in my community was upset.

You heard about riots all across the land.

Bobby Kennedy was scheduled to bring an inner city message in Indianapolis.

This is the picture. They said,

"It's going to be too volatile for you to go."

He insisted, "I must go."

So, sitting on a flatbed truck,

the elders of the community are there,

I allowed my anger, my bitterness, my grief to simmer a while,

and then I made up my mind that I was going to make a different world,

and we can do that together."

That's a picture. Compassion? I think I see it.

I saw it when the Dalai Lama came to the Riverside Church while I was a pastor,

これがまさに思いやりだと私は思います。

and he invited representatives of faith traditions from all around the world.

リバーサイド教会の牧師時代 ダライ・ラマが 教会を訪れた際も思いやりのあり方を見ました

He asked them to give a message,

その時彼は世界中の伝統的信仰の 代表者たちを招待しました

and they each read in their own language a central affirmation,

and that was some version of the golden rule:

"As you would that others would do unto you,

do also unto them."

Twelve in their ecclesiastical or cultural or tribal attire

affirming one message.

We are so connected that we must treat each other

as if an action toward you is an action toward myself.

One more picture while I'm stinking and thinking about the Riverside Church:

9/11. Last night at Chagrin Fall,

次の写真は私リバーサイド教会について チャグリンフォールで講話をしていたときのものです

a newspaperman and a television guy said,

9月11日（アメリカ同時多発テロの日）は チャグリンフォールでの最後の夜でした

"That evening, when a service was held at the Riverside Church,

チャグリンフォールの新聞記者と テレビ記者は次のように語りました

we carried it on our station in this city.

「リバーサイド教会で礼拝が行われた夜

It was," he said, "one of the most powerful moments of life together.

私たちはこの街の中心部でも礼拝を続けました

We were all suffering.

But you invited representatives of all of the traditions to come,

and you invited them.

Now, as a preacher, I got a job. I got to preach the stuff,

"Some people preach the Gospel.

I have to tangibilitate the Gospel."

So, the real issue is: How do you tangibilitate compassion?

私はその福音を理解し形にしなければならない」 と言っていました

How do you make it real?

つまり本当の問題は どうすれば 思いやりを形にして表すことができるのか？

My faith has constantly lifted up the ideal,

どうすればそれを現実の世界で実行できるのか？ ということなんです

and challenged me when I fell beneath it.

私の信条は常にこの理想を高くし

In my tradition, there is a gift that we have made to other traditions --

私がその理想に値しないとき 私に異議を唱えてきました

to everybody around the world who knows the story of the "Good Samaritan."

Many people think of it primarily in terms of charity,

全ての人への贈り物があります

random acts of kindness.

But for those who really study that text a little more thoroughly,

you will discover that a question has been raised

that leads to this parable.

The question was: "What is the greatest commandment?"

ある疑問が湧いてくることでしょう

And, according to Jesus, the word comes forth,

"You must love yourself,

you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind and soul,

「己を愛し

and your neighbor as yourself."

And then the person asked, "Well, what do you mean, 'neighbor?'"

己の隣人を愛せよ」です

And he answered it by telling the story of the man who fell among thieves,

すると続いて「では”隣人”とは何か」 という疑問が湧く

and how religious authorities went the other way,

その疑問に対しキリストは 泥棒の間で倒れた男の話を引用し

and how their supporters in the congregation went the other way;

いかに宗教上の権力者が 間違った方向に行ってしまったか

but an unsuspecting, despised person came along,

その支持者たちもまた 別の道に行ってしまったかを話すでしょう

saw the man in need,

「疑うことをしらない 嫌われ者が現れ

provided oil and wine for his wounds,

貧乏人に会い

put him on his own transportation,

その傷口を癒すために 油とワインを与え

and took him to the inn

and asked the innkeeper, "Take care of him."

宿へ連れて行き

And he said, "Here, this is the initial investment,

but if needs continue, make sure that you provide them.

“まずはこれだけ支払うが

And whatever else is needed, I will provide it and pay for it when I return."

もしさらに必要なら 必要なものを彼に必ず与えると約束してください

This always seemed to me to be a deepening

必要なものは何でも私が用意するし 私が戻ったときにその費用も払います"

of the sense of what it means to be a Good Samaritan.

この寓話は良きサマリア人とは 何たるかということを

A Good Samaritan is not simply one whose heart is touched

私に深く考えさせます

in an immediate act of care and charity,

良きサマリア人というのは

but one who provides a system of sustained care -- I like that,

単に素早く他人を手助けし 慈悲をかける心をもつ人のことではなくて

'a system of sustained care ' -- in the inn, take care.

その支援を継続させる仕組みを作る人のことを指すのです 私はこの考えが気に入っています

I think maybe it's one time when the Bible talks about a healthcare system

先程の宿屋で行う世話が まさに「継続的支援」です

and a commitment to do whatever is necessary --

この寓話は　聖書が医療及び

that all God's children would have their needs cared for,

「必要なことは何でもする」という献身の心や

so that we could answer when mommy eternal asks, "In regards to health,

「皆元気にしている？」という 母なる神の問いかけに「はい」と答えられるように

are all the children in?" And we could say yes.

神の子たちは皆助けを必要としているのだ ということについて

Oh, what a joy it has been to be a person seeking to tangibilitate compassion.

I recall that my work as a pastor

To be a pastor is to care for these individual needs.

But now, to be a Good Samaritan -- and I always say,

and to be a good American -- for me,

is not simply to congratulate myself for the individual acts of care.

善きアメリカ人であるために

Compassion takes on a corporate dynamic.

私が行った個々の支援に対して 私自身を称賛することはしない

I believe that whatever we did around that table at Bloodworth Street

思いやりは結集した原動力を持つようになる

must be done around tables and rituals of faith

私はブラッドワース通りの テーブルを囲んでやったことは

until we become that family, that family together

我々が皆家族となり 結束の本質を理解するまで

that understands the nature of our unity.
