because as a religious historian,

I've become acutely aware

of the centrality of compassion

in all the major world faiths.

Every single one of them

has evolved their own version

どの一つの宗教をとっても

of what's been called the Golden Rule.

その宗教は独自の形で

Sometimes it comes in a positive version --

この黄金律を発展させてきました

"Always treat all others as you'd like to be treated yourself."

時には肯定的な言い回しで

And equally important

「自分にしてもらいたいことを 他人にしてあげなさい」

is the negative version --

そして 同じくらい重要なのが

"Don't do to others what you would not like them to do to you."

これの否定的な言い回しです

Look into your own heart,

「自分にして欲しくないことは 他人にもしてはいけません」

discover what it is that gives you pain

あなたの心と向き合ってください

and then refuse, under any circumstance whatsoever,

苦痛と感じることを思い出してください

to inflict that pain on anybody else.

そしてどんな状況であっても そのことを

And people have emphasized the importance of compassion,

not just because it sounds good,

but because it works.

People have found that when they have

implemented the Golden Rule

as Confucius said, "all day and every day,"

not just a question of doing your good deed for the day

and then returning to a life of greed

一日だけ良い行いをして

and egotism,

欲とエゴに満ちた 元の生活に戻るということ

but to do it all day and every day,

ではありません

you dethrone yourself from the center of your world,

そうではなく 毎日実践することで

put another there, and you transcend yourself.

自分を世界の中心に据えるのではなく

And it brings you into the presence

他者を中心に据えることで、自我を超越するのです

of what's been called God, Nirvana, Rama, Tao.

そこで見えてくると言われるのが

Something that goes beyond

「神」「悟り」「ラーマ」「道（タオ）」と呼ばれるものです

what we know in our ego-bound existence.

これは 私たちがよく知っている

But you know you'd never know it a lot of the time,

"エゴに繋がれたもの"の範疇を超えたものです

that this was so central to the religious life.

しかし この境地に至ることは ほとんどできません

Because with a few wonderful exceptions,

これこそが信仰的な生き方の核心でした

very often when religious people come together,

素晴らしい例外は少しあるのですが

religious leaders come together, they're arguing about abstruse doctrines

宗教家や宗教のリーダーが集まると

or uttering a council of hatred

たいていの場合 難解な教義についての議論や

or inveighing against homosexuality or something of that sort.

憎しみを込めた言葉での応酬や

Often people don't really want to be compassionate.

ホモセクシュアルの弾劾 などがはじまります

I sometimes see

しばしば 人は思いやりを持とうとは思っていません

when I'm speaking to a congregation of religious people

時々私が感じることですが

a sort of mutinous expression crossing their faces

宗教家の集会で講演をしていると

because people often want to be right instead.

反抗的な顔つきをされることがあります

And that of course defeats the object of the exercise.

皆 とにかく「正しく」ありたいのです

Now why was I so grateful to TED?

その思いこそが本来の目的を潰してしまいます

Because they took me very gently

今なぜ 私がTED にこれほど感謝しているかというと

from my book-lined study

彼らはとても優しく

and brought me into the 21st century,

私を 本に囲まれた研究から

enabling me to speak to a much, much wider audience

２１世紀につれて来てくれて

than I could have ever conceived.

思いもよらないような、非常に多くの聴衆にむけて

Because I feel an urgency about this.

話す機会をあたえてくれました

If we don't manage to implement

the Golden Rule globally,

so that we treat all peoples, wherever and whoever they may be,

as though they were as important as ourselves,

I doubt that we'll have

a viable world to hand on to the next generation.

次の世代にとって

The task of our time,

有望な世界を引き継げないと思うのです

one of the great tasks of our time,

我々が今 成すべき事

is to build a global society, as I said,

現代における大きな課題の一つとしては

where people can live together in peace.

全世界の人々が平和に

And the religions that should be making a major contribution

共生できる社会をつくることです

are instead seen as part of the problem.

宗教は 大きな貢献をすべきですが

And of course it's not just religious people who believe in the Golden Rule.

代わりに 問題の原因と見られています

This is the source of all morality,

そして「黄金律」は 宗教家だけが信じるものではありません

this imaginative act of empathy,

すべての道徳の源泉なのです

putting yourself in the place of another.

共感という想像力を働かせることにより

And so we have a choice, it seems to me.

人の立場にたつことができるようになるのです

We can either go on bringing out or emphasizing

今　私たちは選択を迫られています

the dogmatic and intolerant aspects of our faith,

信仰の心がもつ 独善や偏狭の側面を

or we can go back to

強めていくのか

the rabbis. Rabbi Hillel, the older contemporary of Jesus,

もしくは 原点に戻るのか

who, when asked by a pagan

キリストより前の時代の賢者 ラビ ヒレルの頃へと

to sum up the whole of Jewish teaching while he stood on one leg,

ヒレルはある異教徒からこう問われ

said, "That which is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor.

「片足で立っている間に ユダヤ教の教えを暗唱できるか」

That is the Torah and everything else is only commentary."

ヒレル「自分がされたくないことを隣人にしてはいけない

And the rabbis and the early fathers of the church who said that

それが教えの全てだ 残りは解説にすぎぬ」

any interpretation of scripture

賢者や初期の神父はこう断じました

that bred hatred and disdain was illegitimate.

「どんな解釈であれ

And we need to revive that spirit.

憎しみや尊大の心を増大させるものは まがい物である」

And it's not just going to happen

私達はこうした精神を取り戻す必要があるのです

because a spirit of love wafts us down.

待っていても変わりません

We have to make this happen,

なぜなら思いやりの心は儚く 消え去ってしまいがちなものだからなのです

and we can do it

私たちによって実現させるのです

with the modern communications

TED が取り入れた

that TED has introduced.

この近代的な手法で

Already I've been tremendously heartened

これを成し遂げられるのです

at the response of all our partners.

In Singapore, we have a group

非常に勇気づけられます

going to use the Charter to heal divisions

シンガポールで

recently that have sprung up in Singaporean society,

近年広がった社会の亀裂を治癒するために

and some members of the parliament want

to implement it politically.

In Malaysia, there is going to be an art exhibition

in which leading artists are going to be

taking people, young people,

and showing them that compassion also lies

at the root of all art.

Throughout Europe, the Muslim communities

are holding events and discussions,

are discussing the centrality of compassion

in Islam and in all faiths.

But it can't stop there. It can't stop with the launch.

各地で催しています

Religious teaching, this is where we've gone so wrong,

しかし これらは始まりに過ぎず ここで終わらせてはなりません

concentrating solely on believing abstruse doctrines.

宗教についての教育 これこそが間違ってきたのです

Religious teaching must always lead to action.

難解な教えを信じることばかりやってきたのです

And I intend to work on this till my dying day.

宗教についての教育は 常に行動に結びつかなければなりません

And I want to continue with our partners

私は死ぬまでこのことを意識して活動していきます

to do two things --

そして 私は仲間たちと２つのことを

educate and stimulate compassionate thinking.

続けていきたいと思います

Education because we've so

思いやりの心を伝え 培うことです

dropped out of compassion.

教育が必要な理由は

People often think it simply means

私たちは思いやりに欠けているからです

feeling sorry for somebody.

多くの人が思いやりとは他人を気の毒に

But of course you don't understand compassion

想うことだと思っています

if you're just going to think about it.

ですが 想うだけでは思いやりの心を

You also have to do it.

理解できません

I want them to get the media involved

行動しなくてはならないのです

because the media are crucial

メディアも巻き込んでいってほしいと思っています

in helping to dissolve some of the stereotypical views

なぜなら メディアは

we have of other people,

人々を分け隔てる原因となる

which are dividing us from one another.

固定概念を取り除くのに

The same applies to educators.

とても有効だからです

I'd like youth to get a sense of

これは 教育者に関しても 同様です

the dynamism, the dynamic and challenge

若者には 思いやりを持った生き方から湧き出る

of a compassionate lifestyle.

活力やチャレンジを

And also see that it demands acute intelligence,

感じ取ってほしいと思います

not just a gooey feeling.

そして思いやりとは感傷だけではなく

I'd like to call upon scholars to explore

鋭い知性を要することを知ってほしいのです

the compassionate theme

私が学者たちを訪ね追究したいと思っていることとは

in their own and in other people's traditions.

彼ら自身や人々の伝統における

And perhaps above all,

思いやりに関するテーマについてです

to encourage a sensitivity about

そして 何よりも

uncompassionate speaking,

思いやりに欠けた言葉に対する感性を

so that because people have this Charter,

育んでいきたいのです

whatever their beliefs or lack of them,

この思いやりの憲章をもつことで

they feel empowered

信仰の違いや有無に関わらず

to challenge uncompassionate speech,

軽蔑的な発言や

disdainful remarks

思いやりに欠けた演説に対して

from their religious leaders, their political leaders,

異を唱える権利があると

from the captains of industry.

感じられるようになるのです それが宗教や政治の指導者や

Because we can change the world,

産業界の指導者たちに対してであっても

we have the ability.

私たちは世界を変えられるのです

I would never have thought of putting the Charter online.

その力があるのです

I was still stuck in the old world

この憲章をオンラインにしようなんて 思いもよりませんでした

of a whole bunch of boffins sitting together in a room

私は部屋に閉じこもって

and issuing yet another arcane statement.

難解な問題について語り合っている偏狭な専門家のいる

And TED introduced me to a whole new way

古い世界の住人だったのですから

of thinking and presenting ideas.

そこへ TED が私にアイデアを考える事と伝える事の

Because that is what is so wonderful about TED.

新しい方法を示してくれました

In this room, all this expertise,

これが TED のすばらしいところです

if we joined it all together,

もし この部屋いる全ての専門家が

we could change the world.

皆で一丸となれば

And of course the problems sometimes seem insuperable.

私たちは世界を変えられるかもしれません

But I'd just like to quote, finish at the end

with a reference to a British author, an Oxford author

whom I don't quote very often,

ever since I read it when I was a schoolgirl.

He said that he distinguished between erotic love,

when two people gaze, spellbound, into each other's eyes.

And then he compared that to friendship,

when two people stand side by side, as it were, shoulder to shoulder,

with their eyes fixed on a common goal.

We don't have to fall in love with each other,

区別することができると言っています。

but we can become friends.

私たちは必ずしも恋人同士になる必要はありませんが

And I am convinced.

友人となることはできるのです

I felt it very strongly

私は確信しています

during our little deliberations at Vevey,

ヴィヴェイで行われた協議の中で

that when people of all different persuasions

私が強く感じたことは

come together, working side by side

様々な信仰をもった人々が

for a common goal,

一同に集まり 協力し 共通の目標に

differences melt away.

向かうことによって

And we learn amity.

違いは乗り越えられるのです

And we learn to live together and to get to know one another.

友好を学ぶのです
