  • Hi, it's Linda Raynier. Career Strategist and creator of Stand Out & Get Hired.

  • Guiding you to your purpose and the career you're meant to do.

  • So, in today's video, I want to talk to you about the topic of expectations.

  • And specifically, I want to show you 2 tips that you can use to completely reframe your mind

  • and let go of expectations and pressure and tension that you're putting on yourself

  • and instead, move forward and achieve that career that you want with a sense of joy and excitement.

  • So the reason that I wanted to talk about this is because this is an area, personally, I've had to deal with throughout my life.

  • It was only until I realized that it was faulty thinking

  • that I was able to really change my mindset and get rid and let go of my expectations.

  • So, I used to think that if I had high expectations that it meant I would achieve my goals faster.

  • I was thinking about them in a way where, I needed to get them now.

  • I needed to achieve my expectations now.

  • And because of that, I was putting a lot of weight on my shoulders, and a lot of pressure and tension on myself.

  • And if anything, it wasn't helping me to get to my goals faster,

  • It was actually slowing me down. And this is what having high expectations can do to you.

  • So for example, imagine that you're running a race.

  • And as you're on the race track you're running with a knapsack on with 30 pounds of bricks in that knapsack.

  • And that knapsack was one that you chose to put on.

  • You didn't have to wear it, but you chose to.

  • That's exactly what having high expectations is like.

  • You choose to wear all this weight on your shoulders and put all this pressure and tension on yourself.

  • And then, you decide to run the race.

  • Well guess what, you're not going to be able to make it in the time that you want, because

  • you're being bogged down. You're slowing yourself down.

  • Instead of making it to the finish line quickly, you're starting to think about how painful it is,

  • and how tiring it is, and how dreadful it is, and how exhausted you are.

  • And...you get the idea.

  • So to make sure we're on the same page, let's get clear on what expectations are.

  • So for example, when it comes to your career or business,

  • you probably have expectations that you'll be successful, you'll grow quickly,

  • the business will grow quickly, it'll be high paying,

  • that you won't have any worries about money. That the people you work with or the people that work for you will be engaged and happy.

  • And as a result of all of that, you're going to be engaged and happy.

  • You're depending your happiness on an external outcome.

  • But you may be wondering, shouldn't I have high expectations?

  • Otherwise, how would I achieve the goals that I want?

  • And to that I say "Absolutely." If you have a dream and a vision for yourself,

  • that you're one day going to be pursuing work that is meaningful and it fills you up and you're engaged

  • and you're joyful and it's just something that you love doing,

  • and you're making money from it. All of those things.

  • If you have that vision then absolutely, hold onto that. That is your dream.

  • That is what you need to have in order to keep you moving forward.

  • However, it's only when that vision becomes less of an exciting goal that you're looking towards,

  • and more of an expectation, that that's where the pressure starts to come on.

  • So let me explain by showing you 2 simple suggestions that will help you to reframe your mind

  • on the idea of what expectations are.

  • And how you can use that to let go of these expectations but still go after what it is that you want.

  • Intention is all about connecting with the pure and genuine desire of that it is that you want.

  • When you can say that to yourself, "I intend to have a wonderful career that is fulfilling and meaningful."

  • There's a sense of ease that comes with that.

  • The word 'intention' doesn't have the same heavy weight that the word 'expectation' does.

  • The word 'expectation,' on the other hand, comes with a whole slew of other connotations.

  • Because when you start saying things like "I expect to have a beautiful life,"

  • then all of a sudden, other phrases come tagging along with that.

  • Such as, "I need to have it now!"

  • "I must have it!"

  • "I should be there already!"

  • "I have to have it!"

  • You see what I mean?

  • There's a weight that comes with the word expectation.

  • There's a heaviness and there's a demand.

  • And that, my friend, is where pressure and tension lurks it's ugly head

  • and sits on your shoulders. And literally physically, and emotionally and mentally

  • you feel the weight. And it slows you down from going after what you want.

  • So instead of using "expectation" as your go-to word,

  • instead, call your vision or dream as your intention.

  • That is what you intend for yourself.

  • A practical way to do this is to have some sort of box, or container

  • or journal, where you can literally just write down your intentions

  • not expectations, your intentions, and then you can put it away.

  • So for me, for example, I actually have a container just like this

  • with a lid, that I use. Right now I'm using it for something else, for a different purpose.

  • I have a container just like that.

  • And what I'll do, on occasion, is I'll have these big visions and goals and dreams

  • and I'll write them out. Take that piece of paper, fold it up and put it away in this container.

  • I also have a journal that I write in almost daily

  • and that helps me to get out what it is that I want to bring into the world.

  • So there are different methods to doing this but the reason why it's important to do this from a physical perspective,

  • is because it helps you to physically and energetically detach

  • from those thoughts. From the feeling that you need to accomplish this now.

  • It's more like, "This is my intention for the world. And for my life, and for my career."

  • So I'm going to put it out there and put it away.

  • And then, you'll start to come up with action steps that you can do on a regular basis to eventually

  • achieve that full picture. That full intention for yourself.

  • So there you have it. Two unique, yet very simple techniques to reframe your mind

  • in order to let go of your expectations to go after the ideal career of your dreams

  • at faster speed and with less weight on your shoulders.

  • So now you have these tips. But if you're keen to learn more about how you can uncover your purpose and the work you're meant to do,
