  • Maria: Hi boys and girls (Male laughter)

  • Here we are in Zentangle Land

  • and we are unveiling our

  • instructions for doing Auraknot.

  • This is a tangle that we posted on our website,

  • on our newsletter, I'm sorry.

  • we invited everybody as a challenge to see if they could figure out how it was done.

  • What we came up with was a way of doing any number of

  • pointed star in a very easy way.

  • So, the first step is to do

  • a series of points in any order

  • or any way, as long as they connected at the end.

  • The next step

  • is we're going to start joining the edges and in this particular

  • variation, we're going to just

  • skip one point so we're going to take this

  • and we're gonna join it here for this one and skip that one.

  • Then we're going to aura

  • this line ....and go to there.

  • so we're going to turn the tile clockwise

  • and go to the next one and we're going to join it to here

  • and then aura.. down to here.

  • Turn the tile clockwise.

  • this is your point at the top point. Join it

  • Aura.

  • Turn.

  • Join it. and it doesn't even matter if you join it in kind of a curvy line

  • it sort of makes for a really interesting star.

  • Join here

  • to here

  • So there is our beginning of our auraknot

  • Rick: and that's so beautiful, even by itself, and you can see the whole hollibaugh effect.

  • because the clues that we had were aura and hollibaugh.

  • Maria: Okay, so what we are going to look for now:

  • There is only one line on here

  • that's one continuous line and that's where we can always go back to

  • so this line right here it was the first one we put down

  • You may even want to mark it a little bit,

  • so you know where you are going to begin each time.

  • We're going to, in our usual way, we are going to aura

  • that line again. Turn it clockwise.

  • Aura the next line.

  • Turn it.

  • Rick: The beauty of this is that works with even-numbered,

  • or odd numbered. Triangles.

  • Maria: Yup, any number.

  • Rick: Any number works.

  • So at first, Maria came up with this idea

  • and all she had when she was starting was a piece of newspaper

  • and a pen and you should of seen it, it was

  • totally covered with this brilliant, brilliant idea and it was so much fun

  • and you see in the newsletter the whole table was was covered with explorations

  • of this.

  • and at first we did a

  • 3 pointed one and then tried a 4 pointed one

  • and then you can do

  • any shape and it's it really, really

  • simple and very, very exciting.

  • So it was so cool that we decided well let's just put it out there

  • and let let people play with it because it's very difficult to figure it out.

  • Maria: So, now we've done this aura

  • on each one of these points and and pretty much filled the point

  • if you want to continue, you can. It's not necessary, but you can

  • If I just keep going around...

  • there you go: Auraknot.

  • So, we'll show you again with a different number of points

  • and then we will show you some tanglelations.

  • Do you want to try one, Rick?

  • Rick: Sure.

  • So, when we first started

  • we did 3 and

  • the beauty of this is that

  • it doesn't have to be perfectly symmetrical or anything

  • because then you just take it

  • come around and even if it's not this

  • perfect curve, it all ends up working really,

  • really well.

  • So now it goes: aura ... hollibaugh.

  • hollibaugh is one of our tangles

  • and it's done by drawing behind. That's why we're saying

  • the Hollibaugh technique

  • and aura is to

  • echo a line right next to it. So. that's what we're doing here

  • and that's the basic shape.

  • So, as Maria said you find that

  • one that is continuous and then go back to that one

  • and just

  • just keep iterating ...over and over again

  • and it has this

  • very you know, a lot of people

  • commented on how it had a Celtic knot feel

  • and you can accomplish that without

  • having to figure out how it's done.

  • You don't have to put the dots down and do all the planning ahead of time.

  • And you can imagine

  • you know we'll come back to these later and do some shading but you can imagine

  • how much fun

  • this will be to shade.

  • So there's another version, and we could continue in

  • in this or some the other things we've done is put tipple in those spaces.

  • Maria: Okay so now we're gonna get a little creative.

  • we're going to start again with any number

  • points on your star that you want and they don't have to be on the same.

  • They can be

  • kind of ragged, doesn't matter. Okay.

  • we have 1..2..3..4..5..6..7. 7 pointed star.

  • So now when we did it the first time, we joined this..

  • to this right here, just going to the next

  • get skipping one point. This time we're gonna skip

  • two points. We're going to take this line and join it

  • to this one, with our aura. So this is our first stroke.

  • then went to take this one,

  • skip two points and join it here.

  • skip two points

  • you can see that even throwing in a little bit of a curve there for character

  • really adds to it.

  • Rick: and again it doesn't matter, 7 or 8

  • or 6. Even or odd. It all works the same.

  • The same method works for any number of facets or points.

  • Maria: Okay, so we have our basic star again.

  • It's just going to end up looking a little different because it

  • joined a little differently. So now we go back to our

  • first stroke down and again, we are going to do the aura

  • turn it to the right, clockwise.

  • and then following that curvy line, it's so pretty

  • This just makes itself

  • Rick: it does.

  • I made that a little bit different there

  • but I think it's going to be okay.

  • Rick: It's also very forgiving.

  • Maria: I think that's pretty cool. We could add some

  • other patterns inside. I think that one looks great just the way it is.

  • another way we can do this

  • it'll start with the basic shape just like that

  • first one

  • and even though this looks a little funky

  • and for gonna work out he can still disco here

  • same principle applies we don't have to

  • kept that those initial elements

  • aren't perfect hit it really his

  • very very forgiving you can

  • you can make them whatever perfect mean but you can make the release electrical

  • and not but

  • point is if you don't make them through Africa Tulsa OK

  • sheesh

  • so what you can do now

  • is make another

  • that shapes

  • okay and we're going to do the same thing

  • connected and then well-connected

  • and or at and so

  • what will and up where sheesh is

  • are to

  • for the that will weave together

  • so now I'm going to go back to the first one

  • Anne and again this will work with any number of points we just had to step 3

  • m3 cuz it

  • Anna curved and straight because it easy to follow but you can do this at

  • any numbers shapes and we'll just

  • again or anything can in principle

  • hola by we never cross a line

  • always go behind so just by

  • or game and never crossing a line

  • these will weave together it was sorta going fast here seeking get get the idea

  • but we

  • really encourage you to get this and clay with that

  • so now will go back to that original one can see it's the one that goes and

  • and and now will

  • or a and holla by the straight edge to

  • 1 and you can see

  • how their all interweaving

  • together sheesh

  • without planning without weaving

  • so instead taking the time here to finish it this is

  • this is what happens when you

  • keep doing it back and forth and back and forth and then you can shade it's a

  • C each one

  • works itself into the other and

  • they they interweave so that that's another I'm

  • application up or not show

  • Indian looking at what rate did there we could try it

  • again I'm gonna do it

  • instead it points see what happens here

  • on

  • okay so we're going to I'm gonna I'm gonna do the thing where I am skipping

  • to you on this just to kinda get used to seeing an

  • from

  • news for them

  • now Rick just introduced another triangle

  • but i wanna just introduced a ribbon

  • sorter weeping

  • around in

  • right now to so many days I can do in my sleep case and then go back

  • be to the original and start hitting them

  • for a and

  • unlike Rick I'm not going to

  • home go back

  • can't do it on the river and I'm just gonna do it on the original Star

  • and let the ribbon just

  • we've in between

  • nice

  • I'm

  • you don't even have to worry about when you gonna finish could have just said it

  • finishes that are in town

  • in return

  • so it's kinda go

  • I love that one so I'm sure you watching this and you can like

  • como I can do this with that I can do that with that and and play with in so

  • many ways

  • 10 you can UK yes different ones together and

  • here's one that leaves three did very where is that

  • we didn't put on the website on take for this one really didn't play

  • starting one and then putting others nesting others

  • into it so anyway you guys have fun with or not

  • or not when I I

  • and not send us some samples please read some great in it so we had so much fun

  • with us

  • we know you will too campaign to be a winner and other winter I'm or not

  • pain is Maddie and she will be getting a little something in the mail

  • and now I everybody who actually sent us instructions where they

  • big made an effort to do this we're gonna put all those names in hand

  • picking

  • pics and a buncha stuff and and will will send those after

  • so thanks to everybody fine system by
