most widely known for starting the yarn bombing movement.

ヤーン・ボミング運動（毛糸テロ） 創始者として最も広く知られてます

Yarn bombing is when you take knitted or crocheted material

ヤーン・ボミングとは 毛糸で編んだ生地で

out into the urban environment, graffiti-style --

都市の街並みを グラフィティ的に飾ること

or, more specifically,

もっと具体的に言えば

without permission and unsanctioned.

許可なく 認可なくやることです

But when I started this over 10 years ago,

でも 10年以上前 始めたばかりの頃は

I didn't have a word for it,

この活動には名前もつけず

I didn't have any ambitious notions about it,

これで何をしたいという野心も

I had no visions of grandeur.

壮大なビジョンもなく

All I wanted to see was something warm and fuzzy and human-like

ただ 暖かくてふわふわで 人間的な何かを

on the cold, steel, gray facade that I looked at everyday.

毎日目にする 冷たい 灰色の 金属の表面に 与えたかっただけです

So I wrapped the door handle.

まずはドアハンドルを 毛糸で覆ってみました

I call this the Alpha Piece.

作品第１号です

Little did I know that this tiny piece would change the course of my life.

こんな小さな物で 自分の人生が 変わるなんて思いもしませんでした

So clearly the reaction was interesting.

だから 周りの反応がすごく意外で

It intrigued me and I thought, "What else could I do?"

私は興味をそそられ 他に何ができるだろうか

Could I do something in the public domain that would get the same reaction?

公共の場でも 同じ反応を得られるような 何かができるかなって思って

So I wrapped the stop sign pole near my house.

家の近くの道路標識の柱を 編み物で覆ってみました

The reaction was wild.

大反響でした

People would park their cars

停めた車を降りて

and get out of their cars and stare at it,

まじまじと見る人

and scratch their heads and stare at it,

首をかしげ まじまじと見る人

and take pictures of it and take pictures next to it,

写真を撮る人 標識の横で写真を撮る人も

and all of that was really exciting to me

あまりの反響に すごくワクワクして

and I wanted to do every stop sign pole in the neighborhood.

近所の標識全部やりたくなって

And the more that I did, the stronger the reaction.

やればやるほど 反響は高まるばかり

So at this point I'm smitten.

すっかり夢中になり

I'm hooked.

ハマっちゃいました

This was all seductive.

ものすごい誘惑でした

I found my new passion

新たな情熱が湧き上がり

and the urban environment was my playground.

都市環境が私の遊び場になりました

So this is some of my early work.

これは初期の作品の１つです

I was very curious about this idea of enhancing the ordinary,

平凡なものを改良するという考えに とても惹かれていました

the mundane, even the ugly,

つまらないもの 醜いものでさえも

and not taking away its identity or its functionality

改良しつつ アイデンティティや 機能性は奪わず

but just giving it a well-tailored suit out of knitting.

ただ ぴったりあつらえた服を 編んであげるだけ

And this was fun for me.

それが楽しかったんです

It was really fun to take inanimate objects

ただの無機物に命を吹き込むことが 本当に楽しかったんです

and have them come to life.

で・・・

So ...

これは みんな笑いますよね

I think we all see the humor in this,

でも・・・

but --

（笑）

(Laughter)

今度は真剣にやりたくなってきました

I was at a point where I wanted to take it seriously.

分析してみたくなりました

I wanted to analyze it.

どうして自分がこんなに 夢中になっているのか

I wanted to know why I was letting this take over my life,

どうしてこんなに熱くなれて

why I was passionate about it,

どうしてこんなに反響があるのか 知りたかったのです

why were other people reacting so strongly to it.

そして気づきました

And I realized something.

デジタル化し せかせかした現代社会で

We all live in this fast-paced, digital world,

皆 何か親しみを感じられるものを 求めているし 欲しているんです

but we still crave and desire something that's relatable.

私たち 皆 感覚が 麻痺しているんだと思います

I think we've all become desensitized

進歩しすぎた都市に住んで

by our overdeveloped cities that we live in,

看板や広告、巨大駐車場に囲まれて 無感覚になっています

and billboards and advertisements,

誰もそんなことに 文句も言わなくなりました

and giant parking lots,

だから ふと 毛糸に包まれた 標識に出くわしたりすると

and we don't even complain about that stuff anymore.

あまりの場違い感に

So when you stumble upon

だんだんと そして奇妙にも

a stop sign pole that's wrapped in knitting

繋がりを感じるようになる—

and it seems so out of place

そんな瞬間があるんです

and then gradually -- weirdly --

私の大好きな瞬間です

you find a connection to it,

この瞬間をすごく 他の人と共有したいんです

that is the moment.

私の好奇心は膨らみました

That is the moment I love

消火栓や道路標識から始めましたが

and that is the moment I love to share with others.

毛糸で他に何ができるか考えました

So at this point, my curiosity grew.

何かもっとスケールが大きくて 無理そうなものは？

It went from the fire hydrants and the stop sign poles

そんなとき バスを手がけました

to what else can I do with this material.

これで まったく流れが変わりました

Can I do something big and large-scale and insurmountable?

この作品はいつまでも 私の心に残るでしょう

So that's when the bus happened.

その頃 私の作品は 認知されてきてはいましたが

This was a real game changer for me.

ここまで大きなものを ニットで覆ったものはありませんでした

I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for this one.

ニットに覆われた市バスは 史上初だったはず

At this point, people were recognizing my work

この時点で 面白い現象を 体験 というか目の当たりにしました

but there wasn't much out there

ヤーン・ボミングは 始めた私の手を もう離れていました

that was wrapped in knitting that was large-scale,

世界に羽ばたいていました

and this definitely was the first city bus to be wrapped in knitting.

世界中の人々が やっていました

So at this point, I'm experiencing,

どうしてわかったかって 世界のどこかを旅して

or I'm witnessing something interesting.

行ったこともない国で

I may have started yarn bombing but I certainly don't own it anymore.

私はやってないのに 道路標識が 毛糸で覆われていたりするんです

It had reached global status.

だから自分のアートで 目標を定めて 追求する一方—

People from all over the world were doing this.

これは 最近の大作です—

And I know this because I would travel to certain parts of the world

ヤーン・ボミングも 同時に発展していきました

that I'd never been to,

そういった経験から 編み物に隠された力が見えてきて

and I'd stumble upon a stop sign pole and I knew I didn't wrap it.

世界中と通じ合える言葉があるんだと わかってきました

So as I pursued my own goals with my art --

この年寄りっぽく

this is a lot of my recent work --

目立たない趣味を通じて

so was yarn bombing.

関係があるなんて思いもしなかった人々との 共通点を見い出しました

Yarn bombing was also growing.

今日ここで自分の話をしながらも

And that experience showed me the hidden power of this craft

お伝えしたいのは

and showed me

一番目立たない場所にこそ 隠された力があったりすることや

that there was this common language I had with the rest of the world.

誰もが何かスキルを持っていて ただ発掘されていないだけだということ

It was through this granny hobby --

私たち人間に備わる 手という道具を見直し

this unassuming hobby --

何ができるか考えてみると—

that I found commonality with people

家を建てたり 家具を作ったり

that I never thought I'd have a connection with.

巨大な壁を塗ったり—

So as I tell my story today,

ほとんどの時間は リモコンや携帯を握ってますよね

I'd also like to convey to you

私もまったくの同罪です

that hidden power can be found in the most unassuming places,

でも 考えてみてください

and we all possess skills that are just waiting to be discovered.

携帯やリモコンを置いてみたら どうなるでしょう

If you think about our hands, these tools that are connected to us,

自分の手で何を作り出せるでしょうか

and what they're capable of doing --

皆 私のこと 編み物の達人だと思ってますが

building houses and furniture,

実は セーターも編めないくらい 編み物はダメでした

and painting giant murals --

でも 編み物で それまで前例のなかった 面白いことをしたわけです

and most of the time we hold a controller or a cell phone.

あと アーティストを 目指してもいなかったし—

And I'm totally guilty of this as well.

専門教育を受けていなかった という意味ですが—

But if you think about it,

数学専攻でしたからね

what would happen if you put those things down?

こんなことが起こるなんて 思っていませんでした

What would you make? What would you create with your own hands?

でも 偶然こうなったわけでもありません

A lot of people think that I am a master knitter

続ける努力もしたし 戦いもしました

but I actually couldn't knit a sweater to save my life.

今は 誇りを持って アーティストとして活動しています

But I did something interesting with knitting

誰もが未来に想いを巡らせますが

that had never been done before.

思うほど滑らかには 進まないかもしれません

I also wasn't "supposed to be" an artist

皆さんもある日 私みたいに退屈しのぎで

in the sense that I wasn't formally trained to do this --

ドアハンドルカバーを編んだら 世界が一変したりするかもしれません

I'm a math major actually.

So I didn't think this was in the cards for me,

but I also know that I didn't stumble upon this.

And when this happened to me, I held on tight,

I fought for it and I'm proud to say that I am a working artist today.

So as we ponder the future,

know that your future might not be so seamless.

And one day, you might be as bored as I was

and knit a door handle to change your world forever.
