Today is January 12th, 2015,

and I am at the Coming-of-Age ceremony in Shibuya.

そして、私は渋谷の成人式に来ています。

今日は、渋谷の成人式に来ています。

Coming of Age day or seijin no hi

成人の日は、

is held every year on the second monday of January,

毎年1月の第2月曜日に開かれます。

to celebrate "new adults".

新成人を祝うためです。

Those who have turned 20,

20歳になった人たちですね。

or are turning 20 in the current school year

また、二十歳になる人もです。

gather for seijin shiki, the Coming-of-Age ceremony.

その人たちが成人式でお祝いをするんです。

It's like a graduation.

卒業式のようにですね。

Graduating childhood and entering adulthood.

子供から卒業し、成人になる。

but more than anything,

そしてこの日は

it's like a modern-day kimono fashion show!

現代の着物ファッションショーでもあるんです。

The girls, or women excuse me,

女の子も、女の人も。

were absolutely gorgeous in their furisode kimonos.

とても綺麗な振り袖を着ています。

Furisode are kimonos with long sleeves like this,

振り袖はこのように着物の袖を長くしているものです。

originally worn by unmarried women.

本来は未婚の女性が着ていました。

Nowadays there are no strict rules

現在では厳しい決まりはなく、

so you can be older and or married

年上でも結婚をしていても

and still wear a furisode

振り袖を着ることができます。

but it's kind of a symbol of Seijin no hi

しかし、これは成人の日のシンボルでもあります。

and a style often worn by younger women.

若い女性がよく着ています。

Back in the edo period (1600s to late 1800s)

江戸時代を見てみると

we didn't have wedding rings to show marital status,

結婚ステータスを示す結婚指輪がないため、

we had furisode.

そのための振り袖なんです。

We also had ohaguro,

お歯黒もあります。

dying your teeth black after marriage,

結婚後に歯を黒く染めることです。

and hikimayu, shaving your eyebrows off after marriage,

また、引眉、結婚後に眉毛を剃るということもあります。

Thank goodness

ほっとしますね。

we don't have those traditions anymore.

今はこのような伝統がないことに。

Some girls get a brand new furisode for this event,

この日のために、新しい振り袖を買う人もいます。

but some wear the furisode that their mothers wore

ただ、母親が着ていた振り袖を着る人もいます。

to their seijin shiki.

母親が成人式の時に着ていたのを。

This is my mom's kimono.

お母さんの着物です。

Oh really?

あ、そうなんですね。

It's so beautiful, even now.

すごい、綺麗、今でも。

Isn't it?

そうなんです。

I love it.

お気に入りです。

おめでとうございます。

As for the guys,

男性の方は、

most wear suits and ties,

スーツを着てネクタイを締めます。

but some take full advantage of this opportunity

しかし、一部の人はこの行事を最大限利用し、

to sport a hakama, a pants-style kimono.

袴を着ます、着物のパンツスタイルですね。

Today's the only day I have a chance to wear it.

今日しか着られないので

I wanted to wear it at least once in my lifetime.

一生に一回は着たいなって思って

So I thought today was the day.

それで今日は着させて頂きました。

You're looking good!

かっこいいです。

I personally think all guys should wear it!

個人的に男性みんな着たほうがいいと思っています！

I got a press pass

パスを頂き、

and got to sit in for the first half of the ceremony.

成人式の前の部に参加させて頂きました。

The ceremonies are organized by region or city,

成人式は地方や都市が主催します。

and you go to the one of your hometown

なので、各自地元で開かれる成人式に参加します。

or where you went to middle school.

または、中学を通った場所で参加します。

since most kids commute outside of town for high school.

高校は地元を出て通う人が多いですからね。

The orchestra up there is playing Let it Go, of course.

管弦楽団が Let it Go を演奏しています。当たり前ですね。

With speeches by the mayor,

市長のスピーチ

members of the ward assembly,

区議会議員や

a few representative “new adults"

新成人代表

It's just like a graduation ceremony

まさに卒業式ですね。

We're finally adults.

僕達もいよいよ大人の仲間入りをさせて頂きます。

From today on,

これからは、

we will take responsbility of our own actions,

自分の言動に責任を持ち

and do what we can to contribute to society.

少しでも人を役に立てる存在となって、社会に貢献できるように努力して参ります。

As we celebrate this day,

成人を迎える今日、

I would like to take the opportunity

私は私を支えてくれたみんなに

to thank everyone that has been there for me.

この場を借りて、感謝の言葉を伝えたいです。

So what does becoming an adult entail?

成人になることとは何でしょう？

So being 20 here in Japan is a big deal

二十歳というのは、日本ではとても大きなことなんですね。

because now you're legal basically in every aspect.

法律上でも責任を持てるようになり、

You can drink, you can smoke,

お酒が飲めるし、タバコも吸えます。

you can vote,

選挙にも参加できます。

whether you choose to do those things or not

どんなことをするにしても、

is up to you, but you have that choice

自分に選択肢があって、

now that you're an adult and you're legal,

成人で、権利もある。

and you're able to make your own decisions.

自分で決めることができるんです。

We need to get on top of things!

ちゃんとしなきゃなって。

Be more responsible.

ちゃんとしなきゃって。

I can drink now!

お酒が飲めること

Now that you're "adults," any resolutions?

これからこうしようとか

to not change actually.

逆に変わらないことです。

After the seijin shiki,

成人式の後、

many of the new adults or shin seijin （新成人）,

新成人は、

will have reunions with their old classmates,

同窓会をしたり、

go drinking with friends,

友達とお酒を飲んだり、

go drinking with their parents,

両親とお酒を飲んだり、

or go visit a nearby shrine or temple.

お参りに行ったり、

Alright guys, so there you have it!

That is what a Coming-of-Age ceremony is like in Japan

これが日本での成人式の様子です。

There are lots of ceremonies throughout the country.

全国で開かれているんです。

So this is just one of them.

これはその内の1つで、

I never got to experience seijin shiki

私は成人式に参加できなかったんですが、

or seijin no hi myself when I was 20 so

私自身が二十歳の時には、

I kind of was able to relive the moment

その瞬間を体験できたような気分です。

through everyone here.
