We'd had scans, and nothing came up.

But every time we got a scan she had her hand over her eye.

It was like she knew.

でもその姿は毎回 目を手で覆っていた

There was an issue called microphthalmia.

自分は知っているかのように

Her eye that she can't see out of is 40 % smaller than her other eye.

娘は「小眼球症」でした

And you need to fill that void with a prosthetic.

見えない方の眼球はもう片方の目の 半分ほどの大きさしかない

If you don't have that prosthetic eye in there you'll face will collapse.

そのため義眼を入れる必要があります

As a father, I didn't know how to deal with it.

そうしないと目元が変形してしまうのです

What do you do? You can't fix it.

父親として自分に一体何ができるのか

And some of the appointments were horrendous.

わかりませんでした

One of the ocularists that we saw, the mold got stuck.

義眼の中には粗悪品もあります

Ashleigh was bear-hugging her while he was trying to pull it off.

試しに入れた義眼が 取れなくなったことがあります

To get it out he basically just ripped it out.

妻が娘をきつく抱きしめている間

She was trembling, it was pretty horrific.

義眼技師は無理に取り出そうとするだけ

Sorry...

かわいそうに 娘は震えていました

And that was it for me.

ごめんなさい...

I wasn't putting her through any of that ever again.

それが限界でした

We literally got home and he was on the computer.

二度とあんな思いはさせたくなかった

I wanted to know how to start making prosthetic eyes myself for my daughter.

家に着くなり 主人はパソコンに向かいました

I was like, 'maybe we should just let the professionals do it'.

娘の義眼を自分で作る方法を知りたかった

He just said,'look what a professional did to our daughter'.

私は素人には無理だと思いましたが

I can do it better and without hurting her.

主人は言いました「プロだってあの程度だ」

That's when he found the John Pacey-Lowrie video.

「自分の方がうまくできる 痛い思いなんてさせない」

I dug into it and would stop the video and look at what John was using.

そして John Pacey-Lowrie氏の 動画を見つけたのです

And I pieced together parts of the process to be able to do it the best that I could

動画を隅々まで見て 一時停止しながら 何を使っているのか確認し

with the things that I had.

細部をつなぎ合わせ最善の方法を編み出しました

It was really frustrating.

必要な道具もそろえました

I'd get 3/4 way through making a perfect eye,

作業は苦労の連続で

and then the last bit of the process I'd stuff up.

完成まであと少しというところまで来て

But I knew each step, I was getting a step closer to making one.

最後に行き詰まったこともある

The first time Ashleigh had said, yeah that's a good one, we'll try it,

でも着実に ゴールに近付いていました

was hard to describe.

Knowing that she was walking around with one that I had made for her.

言葉では言い表せません

For me that was a moment of walk out to the shed and have a cry,

Because I had done something for the family, finally.

So, over two years I've made about 20-odd eyes for her,

and I realised how much of a passion I had for it.

すごく楽しい

And I said, 'well is this what you want to for a job?'

'Is this where you see yourself?'.

それを実感したとき 作業場の外に出て 誰も見ていないときに

And he said 'yes'.

声を上げて泣きました

I said 'OK, let's make it happen then'.

ついに 自分の手で 家族のためになることを成し遂げたからです

When Dwayne first contacted me,

2年以上 娘の義眼を20個ほど作り続けて

basic question, 'I want to become an ocularist, how do I do it?'

それに情熱を傾けていることに気付きました

It's a bit surreal,

主人に尋ねました 「仕事にしてみたいんじゃない？」

going from seeing a man on YouTube to coming and training here with him.

「あなたの天職じゃないかしら」

Going from sledgehammers on an oil rig, to tiny little machines

彼も同意しました

and RS buttons and stuff is pretty awesome.

彼が初めて連絡してきたとき

At the end of it you've got a person

「義眼技師になるにはどうしたらよいか」 と聞かれました

that is wearing an eye that you have made by hand.

嘘みたいですよね

That is very good.

YouTubeの動画を見た男がやって来て ここで直接研修させてもらうことになるなんて

Yeah, the movement is amazing.

石油の掘削場で働いていた自分が こんな小さな装置や道具を

Knowing that I am capable now,

扱うようになるなんて まるで夢のようです

I have to be using what I've learned.

Being back, now it's really all just starting to fall into place.

I've got a state-of-the-art clinic.

使ってくれる人がいる

It's really growing into my dream.

すごくいいわ

You can't really explain what it means to people until you experience,
