I guess we're making spaghetti tacos tonight.

今夜はスパゲッティタコスを作るんだな。

I consider myself a gentle parent.

私は自分を優しい親だと思っています。

And if you don't know what a gentle parent is,

is that gentle parents shouldn't say no.

I don't practice that because I think

kids are gonna hear no in their lives

童心に返る

and so shielding them from that is silly.

だからそれを盾にするのは馬鹿げている。

So, I wanted to try something for a week.

ということで、1週間何かやってみたいと思っていました。

I wanted to try saying yes to my kids for a week.

一週間、子供にイエスと言ってみようと思いました。

So I did it and I learned a lot.

なので、やってみて勉強になりました。

So first I had to set some ground rules

だから最初にルールを決めなければならなかった

because, if not, my house would probably have burnt down.

そうでなければ、私の家は燃えていたでしょう。

First, I did not let my kids know that I was doing this,

まず、子供にはこのようなことをしていることを伝えていませんでした。

because if they had known,

that would have been just pure chaos.

So they had no idea that this was happening.

Second, there were some things that needed to still happen.

There are certain hygiene-oriented things

that need to happen, health-oriented things,

like you can't have cookies for every meal.

But beyond that, I let things go and I said yes.

でも、その先にあるものは手放して、「はい」と言ったんです。

And we had some interesting results.

そして、面白い結果が出ました。

It is Saturday morning.

土曜日の朝です。

It is 6:45 in the morning.

朝の6時45分です。

Both of my kids are awake.

子供は二人とも起きています。

Usually, I'd have them watch a little T.V.

いつもはちょっとしたT.V.を見てもらっていました。

so I could get a little extra sleep,

睡眠時間を確保するために

but they both are hungry, apparently starving to death.

しかし、二人ともお腹が空いていて、どうやら飢え死にしているようです。

And they wanna go to breakfast.

朝食に行きたがってる

So I'm gonna get up and we're gonna go.

だから、起きてから行こうと思う。

So we're gonna get Jackson's hair cut.

ジャクソンの髪を切るんだな

We're walking and he wanted to ride his scooter.

歩いていると、スクーターに乗りたがっていました。

For sure, something I would say no to

確かに、私は何かをノーと言うだろう

because I know my kids.

子供を知っているから

I know that we'll get there, get his hair cut,

そこに行って髪を切ってもらうのはわかっている。

and then I'll end up lugging the scooter

結局スクーターを引きずって

and his younger brother all the way home.

と弟と一緒にずっと家に帰っていました。

But I said yes.

でも、私はイエスと言った。

We got there fine and lo and behold,

私たちはそこに着いて、見よう見まね。

he rode his scooter the whole way back, too.

帰りもスクーターに乗って帰ってきました。

And that was a pleasant surprise

and that was kind of my first realization of like,

"Oh, this might not be a bad thing."

So they both wanted chicken nuggets for dinner

and they asked if we could sit and watch Adventure Time

と聞いてきて、「アドベンチャー・タイムを座って見てもいいかな」と言われました。

while we have dinner.

So the one thing that I was most nervous about

in this whole experiment of saying yes

was the food situation.

If you are a busy parent like me,

私のように忙しい親御さんであれば

you know what it's like getting meals on the table.

食卓の上で食事を取るようなものだろ

It's really tough.

本当に大変です。

So I have this rotation of standard meals

ということで、私はこのローテーションで定番の食事をしています。

that I know work.

私が仕事を知っている

And so, I don't deviate from it

だから、私はそれを逸脱しない。

because you got something good, you just keep doing it.

良いものを手に入れたから、それを続けていく。

So when I started saying yes to them,

the orders got a little weird.

So I have some spaghetti.

ということで、スパゲッティを食べてきました。

I'm gonna attempt to put it in a hard taco shell

because I feel like a soft one with soft spaghetti

柔らかいスパゲッティで柔らかい感じがするから

is gonna be, like, pretty weird.

かなり奇妙なことになりそうだ

Do you like it?

気に入った？

Yeah.

Jackson, are you happy?

ジャクソン、幸せか？

Yes.

そうですね。

Wyatt, are you happy?

ワイアット、幸せか？

Yeah.

そうだな

So I think this was the one thing

ということで、これはこれであったと思います。

that my kids caught on to during the week,

子供たちが一週間の間に夢中になっていた

that I was being a lot more flexible with.

What I learned from this whole week

of them choosing their foods

is that they're more likely to eat the entire plate

if they've chosen what they're gonna have.

This kid's on his third one.

Oh my gosh, look at you go, Jackson.

And ultimately, they'll get what they need nutrition wise,

just maybe in a really weird way.

ただ、たぶん本当に変な意味で

So this week wasn't all rainbows and butterflies.

今週は虹と蝶ばかりではなかったんですね。

There were definitely some slip ups

and some things that I learned

that I definitely should continue to say no to.

The kids really wanted Starbucks for breakfast,

so I said yes.

And we have a lot of errands to run today,

so I wanted to just drive there

and drive straight from there to go do our stuff for the day.

But Jackson really, really wanted to walk

'cause he says he wants to get exercise.

It's about 85 degrees out right now

and Wyatt is insisting on being held, so we're doing it.

It's 85 degrees, Jackson's already tired of walking

and so he's melting down, Wyatt's melting down,

It was a disaster and we ended up just going home.

There was one evening this week

今週はある夜がありました

that I really stepped out of my comfort zone.

自分の居心地の良い場所から 飛び出してきたんだ

So the boys wanted to have a picnic at the park

だから男の子たちは公園でピクニックをしたいと思っていました。

and play soccer for dinner today and it's a work night.

と、今日の晩御飯にサッカーをして、仕事の夜です。

So I normally wouldn't do this but it's really nice out.

だから普段はやらないんだけど、外は本当に気持ちがいいんだ。

It's a beautiful day and they're having a blast

今日は天気が良くて 楽しそうですね

and we're having a good time.

と、楽しい時間を過ごしています。

Are you guys having a good time?

Yeah!

If you are a fellow working parent,

働く親同士であれば

then you'll understand that at the end of the day,

ならば、最後の最後で理解できるでしょう。

it's just kind of like food, PJs, teeth, sleep.

食べ物、パジャマ、歯、睡眠のようなものだ。

But I said yes 'cause I had to.

でも、そうしなければならなかったから、イエスと言ったんだ。

And it ended up being one of the most beautiful nights of the week for us as a family.

そして、それは結局、私たち家族にとって一週間で最も美しい夜の一つになりました。

You know, we packed the picnic,

ピクニックを詰め込んだんだよ

they played with their soccer goal.

彼らはサッカーゴールで遊んでいました。

The kids asked me to play soccer with them

and I said yes because I had to.

And that's not something I typically do

because I've never been good at sports.

And they didn't care that I was bad

It was really eye opening to me to realize

that we can spend weeknights doing quality family stuff,

So the culmination of this week of saying yes

was really this one thing that my kids ask me for constantly

and I knew it was coming, but I was kind of dreading it

because I didn't know how I would handle it.

This morning I was getting ready for work

and Jackson was like, "I wanna come."

I couldn't think of a reason why not.

Yeah, yeah!

And I was terrified because kids are so unpredictable.

そして、子供は予測不能なので怖かったです。

I've seen my two-year-old being a sweet, perfect angel,

2歳のうちの子が完璧な天使になっているのを見たことがあります。

then I've seen him morph into a shrieking banshee in the middle of the grocery store.

雑貨屋の真ん中でバンシーに変身するのを見たことがあるわ

It ended up being so much fun.

最後はとても楽しかったです。

But it was really cool, first of all,

でも、まずは本当にかっこよかったです。

to have everyone I work with meet both of my kids

一緒に仕事をしている人たちが二人の子供に会うために

and I was just really proud

誇りに思っていました

to have these two really well-behaved, sweet,

この二人は本当にお行儀が良くて、甘い。

and polite, and respectful kids at work with me that day.

と礼儀正しく、その日のうちに一緒に仕事をしていた尊敬できる子たち。

It made me realize that they just really wanna know

彼らは本当に知りたいだけなんだと気づかせてくれました

more about me and what I do and they wanna be around me.

私のこと、私が何をしているかをもっと知りたいし、彼らは私の周りにいたいと思っている。

And it just, it made me feel like

そして、それは、それは私を感じさせてくれた

maybe I'm not doing such a terrible job.

そんなにひどい仕事をしているわけではないのかもしれません。

I think part of it also had to do with

we have this like chocolate-covered raisin funnel

that you just like twist it and they keep coming out

and that might have been the whole reason why they were happy that day.

I don't know.

I'm just gonna say it's 'cause of me.

So, what did I learn from this whole week?

I learned, first of all, that I say no a lot of the time

out what I think is convenient.

But it ends up not being that much more difficult to say yes

しかし、それはイエスと言うのはそれほど難しいことではありません。

and it ends up being a lot more rewarding.

I've learned that there's a better work life balance that I can achieve as a parent.

親としてのワークライフバランスの良さがあることを知りました。

It doesn't have to be this like

こんな感じでなくてもいいんです

Monday through Friday is work

月曜から金曜は仕事

and Saturday and Sunday is kids.

で、土日はキッズ。

And that has been such an important realization for me

それは私にとって重要な気づきでした

because that's something I struggle with every day

それは私が毎日悩んでいることだからだ

being a working parent and I'm sure

働き盛りの親であることは間違いない

most of you working parents out there can relate.

働いている親のほとんどは共感することができます。

And finally, I realized I have good kids.

そして、ようやく自分にはいい子がいることに気がついた。

And I know that we all think our kids are the greatest.

子供が一番偉いと思ってるのはみんな知ってるし

Like, obviously my kids are the greatest.

私の子供たちが最高なのは明らかだ

But just having this week to relax

でも、今週はリラックスして過ごせただけでも

and let them make the choices,

そして、彼らに選択をさせます。

made me realize how genuinely great they are

如何に素晴らしいかを私に気づかせてくれました

and how sweet they are and how smart they are.

とか、なんて優しいんだろう、なんて頭がいいんだろう、とか。

And I also learned how to make spaghetti tacos

スパゲッティタコスの作り方も教えてもらいました。

and I also learned that I am never gonna make those again.

もう二度と作ることはないということも知った。
