I am not a farmer.

そうじゃなくて 俺は父親で住人で教師さ

I'm not. I'm a parent, I'm a resident and I'm a teacher.

住んでいるのはここ

And this is my world.

最近気付いたのは

And along the way I've started noticing --

ここ10年ほどで

I'm on my third generation of kids --

生徒は肥満で

that they're getting bigger.

病弱になってきてる

They're getting sicker.

さらにこれもつい先日

In addition to these complexities,

分かったんだが学習障害がある子供の

I just learned that 70 percent of the kids that I see

70%は出生前に母親が栄養摂取が

who are labeled learning disabled would not have been

ちゃんとしてさえいれば防げたんだ

had they had proper prenatal nutrition.

俺が暮らす地域の現実はこう

The realities of my community are simple. They look like this.

こんなのは子供が育つ環境じゃない

Kids should not have to grow up and look at things like this.

仕事はコミュニティから流出し続け

And as jobs continue to leave my community,

エネルギーは輸入に頼り続ける

and energy continues to come in, be exported in,

サウス・ブロンクスが砂漠なんて 呼ばれるのも無理からぬこと

it's no wonder that really some people refer to the South Bronx as a desert.

でも俺は６年生の子供みたいに

But I'm the oldest sixth grader you'll ever meet,

毎日元気一杯でベッドから飛び起きるんだ

so I get up every day with this tremendous amount of enthusiasm

今日はその元気を皆さんと分ち合いたい

that I'm hoping to share with you all today.

俺には一つ信じていることがあって それは

And with that note, I come to you with this belief

地元を出なきゃ生きて学んで稼げないなんて

that kids should not have to leave their communities

とんでもないってこと

to live, learn and earn in a better one.

そこで今日は俺自身と

So I'm here to tell you a story about me

外から持ってきたこの壁について話をしたい

and this wall that I met outside, which I'm now bringing inside.

最初は３人で始まったんだ

And it starts with three people.

The crazy teacher -- that's me on the left,

いいスーツだ カミさんが買ってくれたんだ

I dress up pretty, thank you, my wife, I love you for getting a good suit --

そしてブロンクスの熱血区長

my passionate borough president

それからグリーン・リビング・テクノロジーズの ジョージ・アーウィン

and a guy named George Irwin from Green Living Technologies

彼のこの特許技術を

who helped me with my class

俺のクラスで使うことになったんだ

and helped me get involved with this patented technology.

全ては教室での種まきから

But it all starts with seeds in classrooms,

その教室はこんな感じ

in my place, which looks like this.

今日はこの試みをみんなに伝えて 更に広げて行きたいんだ

And I'm here today hoping that my reach will exceed my grasp.

したいことはそれだけさ

And that's really what this is all about.

始まりは真面目なこの生徒

And it starts with incredible kids like this,

早く来て遅く帰る

who come early and stay late.

俺のクラスは個別授業が必要だったり 英語が母国語でない子供ばかりで

All of my kids are either IEP or ELL learners,

たくさんのハンデを背負っている

most come with a lot of handicaps,

みんな家がなかったり里親の世話になったりしてる

most are homeless and many are in foster care.

ほとんどの生徒が貧困層

Almost all of my kids live below poverty.

でもそんな「種」が成長をとげて

But with those seeds, from day one, we are growing in my classroom,

教室がこうなったんだ

and this is what it looks like in my classroom.

子供達は本当に種に夢中で

And you see how attentive these kids are to these seeds.

小さな種はブロンクスの農地に広がったんだ

And then you notice that those seeds become farms across the Bronx that look like this.

また言うけど俺は農家じゃあなくて教師だ

But again, I am not a farmer. I'm a teacher.

だから雑草取りも腰が痛い仕事も嫌だ

And I don't like weeding, and I don't like back-breaking labor.

そこで考えたんだ どうすれば

So I wanted to figure out how I could get this kind of success

この緑の壁を

into something small, like this,

苦境にある子供達が 外に出なくても世話できるよう

and bring it into my classroom so that handicapped kids could do it,

教室に持ち込んで

kids who didn't want to be outside could do it,

誰でも触れるようにできるか

and everyone could have access.

そこでジョージ・アーウィンに相談したんだ

So I called George Irwin, and what do you know?

彼は教室内に野菜の壁を作ってくれたんだ

He came to my class and we built an indoor edible wall.

それを個々の生徒に世話させる

And what we do is we partner it with authentic learning experiences,

実践的な学習の場と位置づけたら

private-based learning.

ニューヨーク初の食べられる壁ができたんだ

And lo and behold, we gave birth to

びっくりだね

the first edible wall in New York City.

腹が減ったら行って食べていいよ

So if you're hungry, get up and eat.

生徒はみんな牛の真似をしてるよ

You can do it right now. My kids play cow all the time.

でもこれは ほんの始まり

Okay? But we were just getting started,

生徒達はテクノロジーが気に入って

the kids loved the technology,

またジョージに電話をして 「もっとやりたい！」と伝えたんだ

so we called up George and we said, "We gotta learn more!"

Now, Mayor Bloomberg, thank you very much, we no longer need work permits,

which comes with slices and bonded contractors -- we're available for you --

We decided to go to Boston.

And my kids, from the poorest congressional district in America,

became the first to install a green wall,

そこに初めて設置したんだよ

designed by a computer, with real-live learning tools,

21 stories up -- if you're going to go visit it,

But closer to home, we started installing these walls in schools

real LED stuff, 21st-century technology.

そしてマジで最先端の金を稼いじゃったんだ

And what do you know? We made 21st century money,

これってすごいよね ワーオだね！

and that was groundbreaking. Wow!

この作った野菜をどうするかって？

This is my harvest, people.

そりゃ料理するに決まってら！

And what do you do with this food? You cook it!

俺の大事な生徒が秘伝のソースを作ってるよ

And those are my heirloom students making heirloom sauce,

プラスチックのフォークでね そんで食堂に運んで

with plastic forks, and we get it into the cafeteria,

育てた野菜を先生達に食べさせるんだ

and we grow stuff and we feed our teachers.

合法な最年少の労働力ってところさ

And that is the youngest nationally certified

ブロンクスの区長と一緒に写ってるね

workforce in America with our Bronx Borough President.

それから何をするかって？ 皆さん方のようなナイスは人たちに会って

And what'd we do then? Well, I met nice people like you,

ハンプトンに招かれたんだ

and they invited us to the Hamptons.

「サウス・ブロンクスからサウス・ハンプトンへ」ってね

So I call this "from South Bronx to Southampton."

そこで屋根を緑化してさ

And we started putting in roofs that look like this,

極貧の地元出身の生徒達が

and we came in from destitute neighborhoods

こんな風に景色を変えたらそりゃ人は気付くわな

to start building landscape like this, wow! People noticed.

そしたらまた去年呼ばれて

And so we got invited back this past summer,

ハンプトンに引っ越しちゃったよね

and we actually moved into the Hamptons,

週3500ドル払って家を借りて サーフィンまで習ってさ

payed 3,500 dollars a week for a house, and we learned how to surf.

それからこんなふうに

And when you can do stuff like this --

So, you may wonder what does a wall like this

何の役に立つのかって？

really do for kids, besides changing landscapes and mindsets?

それはね

Okay, I'm going to tell you what it does.

まず素晴らしい業者さんとの出会い

It gets me to meet incredible contractors like this,

Jim Ellenberger from Ellenberger Services.

そしてみんなハッピーさ

And this is where it becomes true triple bottom line.

何かってニューヨーカーに手の届く家を建てる技術を

Because Jim realized that these kids, my future farmers,

俺の生徒達が持っているということを

really had the skills he needed to build affordable housing

ジムは理解したんだ

for New Yorkers, right in their own neighborhood.

彼らはそうやって生活の糧を稼いでるんだ

And this is what my kids are doing, making living wage.

さぁ俺みたいに7人の失業者に囲まれて

Now, if you're like me, you live in a building, there are seven guys

out of work looking to manage a million dollars.

I don't have it. But if you need a toilet fixed

てめぇよりいい車に乗ってる修理工に

or, you know, some shelving, I gotta wait six months

半年も待たされるなんて

for an appointment with someone who drives a much nicer car than me.

なんと素晴らしき経済

That's the beauty of this economy.

俺の生徒達はもう免許持って商い中さ

But my kids are now licensed and bonded in trade.

この子は俺の生徒で初めて また家族の中で初めて銀行口座を開いた

And that's my first student to open up, the first in his family to have a bank account.

この移民の生徒は家族で初めてATMを使った

This immigrant student is the first one in his family to use an ATM.

まさにみんなハッピーだ

And this is the true triple bottom line,

見捨てられて荒廃した地元の街を

because we can take neighborhoods that were abandoned and destitute

景色をこんなふうに変えて 内装もこんなにしたら

and turn them into something like this with interiors like this.

みんな気付くんだね 生徒がやったんだと

Wow! People noticed. And notice they did.

そしたらCNNが取材をしに 俺らのファーマーズ・マーケットにやってきた

So CNN called, and we were delighted to have them come to our farmer's market.

さらにロックフェラー・センターがNBCに

And then when Rockefeller Center said, NBC,

こんなのを壁に飾れるかい？ ってさ 喜んで！だ

could you put this thing up on the walls? We were delighted.

アメリカで最も貧しい地区の子供達が

But this, I show you, when kids from the poorest congressional district in America

縦5m横10mもの壁を

can build a 30-foot by 15-foot wall,

デザインして 植え付けして ニューヨークのど真ん中に飾るなんて

design it, plant it and install it in the heart of New York City,

これこそまさに「為せば成る」ってことさ

that's a true "sí se puede" moment.

すごい学校でしょ

Really scholastic, if you ask me.

That's a picture I took of my Bronx Borough President,

addressing my kids in his house, not the jailhouse,

making them feel a part of it.

That's our State Senator Gustavo Rivera and Bob Bieder,

生徒達に会いに教室に来てくれた

coming to my classroom to make my kids feel important.

ブロンクスの区長が来て

And when the Bronx Borough President shows up

さらに州の上院議員が来たとなれば

and the State Senator comes to our class,

ブロンクスが変われるということを 皆信じるようになる

believe you me, the Bronx can change attitudes now.

思いもよらなかった方法で

We are poised, ready, willing and able

この才能と多様性を広める準備はできてるんだ

to export our talent and diversity in ways we've never even imagined.

地元の上院議員が公衆の面前で体重計に乗って

And when the local senator gets on the scale in public

ダイエットとか言ってるけど・・・ そりゃ俺もだー！

and says he's got to lose weight, so do I!

実は子供達と一緒に減量に取り組んでいて

And I tell you what, I'm doing it and so are the kids.

そしたら有名人達も始めたんだ

Okay? And then celebrities started.

プロデュース・ピートは 俺たちの作物に驚いた

Produce Pete can't believe what we grow.

ローナ・サスは本を 寄贈しに来てくれた

Lorna Sass came and donated books.

年配の人にも食べてもらってるよ

Okay? We're feeding seniors.

いつの間にか我らが サウス・ブロンクスの食の正義は

And when we realized that we were growing for food justice in the South Bronx,

国際社会にも認められ

so did the international community.

生徒達がサウス・ブロンクス代表として

And my kids in the South Bronx were repped in

第一回グリーン・ルーフ 国際会議に出席したんだ

the first international green roof conference.

本当にすごいことだ

And that's just great.

地元ではどうか

Except what about locally?

グラウンド・アップ・キャンペーンの エイヴィス・リチャーズって人のおかげで

Well, we met this woman, Avis Richards, with the Ground Up Campaign.

信じられないことに 生徒達が

Unbelievable! Through her, my kids,

社会に取り残された 何もない子供達がだ

the most disenfranchised and marginalized,

ニューヨーク市の公立校に 100もの緑の庭を作ったんだ

were able to roll out 100 gardens to New York City public schools.

まさにみんなハッピーだよ！

That's triple bottom line! Okay?

ちょうど一年前俺はニューヨーク 医学アカデミーに招かれたんだ

A year ago today, I was invited to the New York Academy of Medicine.

健康で頑強なニューヨークを作るという活動に

I thought this concept of designing a strong and healthy New York

参加したのさ しかも参加費はタダ

made sense, especially when the resources were free.

皆さんのおかげだね

So thank you all and I love them.

ニューヨーク市の健康を促進する 戦略的提携機関を紹介されたよ

They introduced me to the New York City Strategic Alliance for Health,

また言うけど タダなんだから使わなきゃ損だ

again, free resources, don't waste them.

それから6ヶ月 どうなったかと言えば

And what do you know? Six months later,

学校に健康的な環境を作ったとして 学校と生徒達が史上初めて

my school and my kids were awarded the first ever

優秀賞を受賞したんだ

high school award of excellence for creating a healthy school environment.

ニューヨーク市で最もグリーンなクラスとしてね

The greenest class in New York City.

でも何より大事なのは 子供達が何かを得ることと

But more importantly is my kids learned to get,

与えることを学んだこと

they learned to give.

ファーマーズ・マーケットで得たお金で

And we took the money that we made from our farmer's market,

ホームレスや世界の

and started buying gifts for the homeless

支援が必要な人々への贈り物を買ったり

and for needy around the world.

社会に還元し始めたんだ

So we started giving back.

アメリカを緑化する活動は

And that's when I realized that the greening of America

ポケットの中の種から始まって いつの間にか情熱になり

starts first with the pockets, then with the heart

考え方を変えていってる

and then with the mind.

でもまだこれで終わりじゃないよ

So we were onto something, and we're still onto something.

トリニティ教会も注目してくれて

And thank God Trinity Wall Street noticed,

おかげでグリーン・ブロンクス・マシーンが誕生し

because they gave us the birth of Green Bronx Machine.

すでに３千人が参加してる

We're 3,000 strong right now.

そこで何をするかといえば

And what does it really do?

住んでるコミュニティのことを見直すんだ

It teaches kids to re-vision their communities,

こんな環境で育っても想像は無限だって学ぶんだ

so when they grow up in places like this, they can imagine it like this.

訓練を受けて資格を取った子供達は ―

And my kids, trained and certified --

ところで母さん市長が免税してくれたよ

Ma, you get the tax abatement. Thank you, Mayor Bloomberg --

― 今はこんなコミュニティを将来こう変えるんだ

can take communities that look like this and convert them into things that look like that,

皆さん 本当にやればできるんだ

and that to me, people, is another true "sí se puede" moment.

全ては学校から始まったこと

Now, how does it start? It starts in schools.

バスケットボールのチームじゃなくて

No more little Knicks and little Nets.

ブロッコリーとか自分の好きな野菜でチーム作るんだ

Group by broccoli, group by your favorite vegetable,

ピンときたものを選んでね

something you can aspire to.

彼らがアメリカの未来の農業を背負って立つんだよ

Okay? And these are my future farmers of America,

141番通りのブルック・パークで

growing up in Brook Park on 141st Street,

アメリカで最も移民が多いこのコミュニティで

the most migrant community in America.

小さいけど粘り強い子供達が野菜作りをすれば

When tenacious little ones learn how to garden like this,

こんな果実を収穫できて不思議ではない

it's no wonder we get fruit like that.

And I love it! And so do they.

地元の焼け跡にみんなでテントだって立ちゃった

And we're building teepees in neighborhoods that were burning down.

Bissel Gardens is cranking out food in epic proportions,

moving kids into an economy they never imagined.

Now, somewhere over the rainbow, my friends,

is the South Bronx of America. And we're doing it.

How does it start? Well, look at Jose's attention to detail.

Thank God Omar knows that carrots come from the ground,

スーパーの棚で実るのでもなきゃ

and not aisle 9 at the supermarket

防弾ガラスや発泡スチロールを 通して手にする物ではないと知ったんだ

or through a bullet-proof window or through a piece of styrofoam.

ヘンリーは緑はいいなと言ってるし その通りだよな

And when Henry knows that green is good, so do I.

味覚の幅が広がれば自然と言葉も増える

And when you expand their palates, you expand their vocabulary.

そして何より大事なことは 小さな子供と大きな子供を混ぜると

And most importantly, when you put big kids together with little kids,

太ったデカい白人の子がいるね！ ご機嫌だね！

you get the big fat white guy out of the middle, which is cool,

なんと子供達の間で責任感が生まれる

and you create this kind of accountability amongst peers, which is incredible.
