  • If it seems like everybody's been waiting for this new iPhone, it might be because they have.

  • Matt Drukker, the portfolio manager of the Fidelity Select Telecom Portfolio saids that

  • "We saw a record-low number of smartphone upgrades in 2016"

  • which could mean this smartphone sales growth this year could be unexpectedly strong.

  • He also says that "...less than a quarter of smartphone customers received an upgrade in 2016,

  • which implies that the average user on a postpaid contract is on pace to keep a phone for roughly four years."

  • Drukker saids that's way too long, and most people are gonna be forced to upgrade this year,

  • because their phones are too old to run the new operating systems and have all the greatest and latest features.

  • And this doesn't just mean more phone sales,

  • it also, when you upgrade your phone, it's a great time to switch carriers.

  • So, it could force carriers to compete even more aggressively for customers in 2017,

  • especially in terms of advertising spending, services packaging, and of course, pricing,

  • which could lead to shifts in market share,

  • and that's today's Fidelity Insight.

If it seems like everybody's been waiting for this new iPhone, it might be because they have.
